question about mousekeeping

Okay, we leave in about 16 days and I planned on leaving $5 a day for mousekeeping in envelopes each day.

However, I have read on the boards( I belong to 4 so I am not sure which one ) that some people have returned to their hotel from the parks to find their door open because the mousekeeper either forgot to close it when she left or thought she had closed it all the way but didn't.

I accept that when you stay at a hotel you pretty much have to trust that the mousekeepers will not take anything but I don't like the idea that sometimes they forget to close you door and other people not employed by the hotel could have open access to your stuff.

So my dilema now is that I would like to put the "do not disturb" sign on the door most days so they won't come in. The only problem is the whole clean room thing, towels, and most of all I don't want them to think I am cheap.

I don't know what to do. Help!

i have never tipped mousekeeping..you never get the same maid for a long time..so you donnt know who gets it..iv been going to disney for 8 years and stayed at most resorts,,and never tipped..i will leave our cooler and pop ,,or a few cooler drinks for them. when we go home .i see the maids going home after there shift and they get bags of pop, water, chips ..baloons you name it, they get it..iv seen maids take runners out of the garbage and put them in there carts,

if you don't want housekeeping, it's best that you call housekeeping from the room and request no service. the problem with using the do not disturb is they will check multiple times throughout the day, so it's not fair to them.

it can be arranged to get fresh towels.

they are not STEALING this stuff its in the garbage or left in the room when people go home..if you go to allstars.you can see the maids go home after there shift.its around 4 pm,you can see them carring the stuff thats thrown out at the resort..we see it every trip.its just stuff people leave or put in the garbage,,,

Ok.. I've stayed at Disney for a total of 50+ nights in my adult life. I have never had anything taken from my room.. nor have I have ever come back to the room to find the door open.

Remember -- nobody is going to post a thread titled "Mousekeeping never left my door open! Amazing."

I don't think you have to worry about this.

I have never had my door left open either. And to be perfectly honest I think the mousekeepers are the most dignified people of all.

They are so respectful of your personal belongings. Personally I do not know how they clean a room so well with all the junk us guests bring. I applaud them.

and now that I know that they take the leftovers, I will definitely make a special bag before I leave. On past trips, I just threw leftover sodas, water, unopened bags of goodies in the garbage.....but from now on, I will make a special place for it so they can take it. I would rather this than be thrown away. hmm......threw away 2 beers last time......what a shame

i've never had any real problems myself and i've left valuables in plain sight and i'm also pretty sure the doors like to shut themselves?

have i heard of doors being left open? i have. and usually that's followed with 'nothing but an apology from the hotel.'

in any case, it's the ONE time out of a billion that it happens that the OP is trying to avoid and honestly, it's the OP's personal decision. the OP did not throw the integrity of the housekeepers into question at all.

as for the other poster in the thread.. i dunno.

Actually, except in some unique situations, each room DOES get the same Mousekeeper most days. Now, naturally they do not often work seven days a week.

At any rate, not having the same Mousekeeper every day does not seem like a valid reason for not tipping. Whichever Mousekeeper cleans the room on a given day will get the gratuity left FOR that purpose. Leaving one's extra stuff as a 'gift' for Mousekeeping at the end of a stay is nice, but they generally can't, for example, pay the electric bill with a cooler and some soda

Okay, I'm going to say something and it may not make some happy. So let the flames begin.....

I tip. I tip no matter what. The person cleaning your room, has I'm sure grown to expect to clean a certain number of rooms per day, with what I expect would be an average amount of tip. That is a part of her income in addition to her hourly pay. She counts on that money to pay her bills. If you choose not to have your room cleaned, the housekeeper is stiffed. Let me say it this way. Suppose you came to your job and for a week or so and your boss tells you that he decides he isn't going to need you for the hours you normally work and your pay will be docked for it. Would you miss that pay? Do you count on that amount each week? Sure you do!!! I think leaving your leftover cokes, etc. (not in the trash) is a great idea. But in my opinion, I would leave a tip if I had to leave it at the front desk. Do I have money to burn? Not on your life, but I have worked as a waitress at a country club and I know how important tips are.

Sorry if I step on any toes, this is just a sore topic for me.

As for having housekeeping leave a door open. I have stayed countless nights in hotel/motels all over the US and have yet to find my door left open. I think the chance of this happening would be very slim. If I did, I would go straight to management and voice my concerns.

Again, this is just my opinions and I'm sorry if you have been offended by them.

I totally agree that you should tip Mousekeeping. I have even tipped when I specifically asked that sheets be changed due to my son throwing up on them, and they were not changed. I had to call and have someone come down to change them late at night.

I have never had my door left open or any concerns with Mousekeeping stealing at all. I didn't know that they will take your "leftovers" but I am sure they did take about a case of water that we left at the end of our trip last year. I would never consider that a tip though.

Okay. Thank you to those of you who gave your opinion without managing to get too upset about my post. I certainly didn't mean to upset anyone. I too have stayed in plenty of hotels over the years and never came back to find my door open either; but please don't flame me because I read on one of these boards that someone has had their hotel door left open.

I am not trying to get out of tipping anyone. What I will do is check the door to see if it is one of those doors that shut on their own - if it is I won't have to worry about it. If it doesn't then I guess I can leave a tip envelope at the front desk each day.

I do have to ask though, what would management HAVE to do if something was stolen from the room? Isn't it a 'leave at your own risk' kind of thing at hotels?

There is another compromise to consider. Sometimes, depending on the hotel I'm staying in (not being Disney specific here) I will call housekeeping when I check in and request service at a specific time when I know I'm likely to be in the room. I still put the tip on the pillow, like I would if I were out of the room, and I usually go out on the balcony, so they don't feel like I'm breathing down their neck while they do the room. But there are times when I prefer to be around when the room is being done.

I've never come back to an open room at Disney. But I have had some rooms that you really had to pull on the door to get it to latch. I'm assuming that the Mousekeepers typically work the same rooms day after day, so they are also aware of the doors that have problems. I'm not saying it can't happen, because obviously it has happened to some people. But not to me.

By the way, one thing I've seen once too often are the people who leave their door "open" with the night latch to go down the hall to get ice. I've never seen a Disney ice machine that gives you a clear view of your door, so people, please, take the key with you and lock your door. You don't know who might be in there when you get back!

I have been at the disney hotels 1 or 2 times a year for the last 9 years and that has never has happened to me or anyone I know
