YouTube is your friend and a question about Splash Mountain

Splash is one of our favorites .... except for my 11 year old. But the thing she HATES is the big drop at the end. She cried and cried last time and hid on my lap all the way to the top and down. And she was older! But she tells us now that she will try it again on our next trip.

Splash is my absolute favorite Disney ride. My dtr loves it too. She has a fear of animatronics especially dolls and this has never been a problem for her at all. I don't think she has really seen them as lifelike at all so no problem. The music - we adore and never noticed it being loud although it may be. We love to quietly sing along. Now as for Small World - that's a whole different story lol.

The only loud ride I feel like is Big Thunder...when you are going on the lift it tends to be LOUD.

My DS4 loves splash mountain. And Haunted Mansion. But Winnie the Pooh scared the hell out of him and he refuses to go on it again. That heffalump and woozel part got to him.

If your son can deal with the creepiness of IASW..then he certainly shouldn't mind Splash lol!

When "Splash Mountain" is in the thread title, SM seems like a perfectly fine abbreviation :)

Except, if you read this thread, at least one poster didn't understand that.

He's never been to WDW but he's at that age where he sees things as "baby" things and "grown up" things. He didn't want to do Winnie the Pooh because that's a "baby" cartoon. I told him he had to go on it because it's my vacation too and that's what I want to do (same for Peter Pan). He might change his mind though, on our last cruise he swore up and down that he didn't want to do the character meets because he was too old for that. The minute he saw Chip n Dale though, he had to get on line and he had to take a photo in his fancy suit with Capt. Mickey on formal night so who knows what he'll wind up doing.

I do not have a great relationship with Splash Mountain. I first went on the Disneyland version when I was nine and was just short of traumatized, with the ride photo to prove it.

Now, I don't hate the ride, but I'm not a huge fan of the drop and if I get stuck on the ride (which happens quite often) I strongly dislike sitting there with the music and the animatronics. So ultimately, I would let your son exert discretion on this one.

I looked at the video again and it was the Splash Mountain in DL (CA) that we watched. Is the one in WDW (FL) maybe not as annoying? If so, I may be able to convince him. Again, I could not care either way, not doing Splash Mountain gives us time to do something else we might like.

They are nearly identical.
Neither is "annoying" in the eyes and ears of most Disney fans.

What is far more convincing is to just stand near the exit of the attraction and look at the happy and excited kids and parents that have just experienced the ride.

Back before FP, Splash used to have regular line-waits of three hours.

But, it's no matter if someone doesn't want to ride it.
There are other rides in the park.
Have a good trip!

My son said he didn't want to ride it because the music was too much and the animatronics were "creepy".

And, I have to ask...
Is this REALLY the reason he's reticent to ride, or is the underlying reason that he fears the big drop?

The complaints about the "annoying" music (it's not) and "creepy" AAs (they are really some of the most likable at Disney)
may be the cover for just not wanting to take the big plunge at the end (and a few more smaller thrills in the middle.)

You know him far better than we do.

With that said, and to my SM question: is it really as annoying and loud during the indoor part as the video shows it to be? My son said he didn't want to ride it because the music was too much and the animatronics were "creepy". I don't really care one way or another it's just that I don't remember it being like that when I went over 20 years ago.

Though I"m pretty sure this has been reasonable answered for you already I thought I would add my thoughts:

Camcorders often pick up different sounds than what you expect. It is all based on the direction the mic is facing. Depending on the design of the recorder it can be above the lens, below the lens or beside the lens. Just those little differences in position will pick up certain sounds more directly than others. Also, some pick up high end really well while leaving out low end (bass sounds). Some do the reverse and some are really good at both. Sometimes if the mic is in just the wrong position it will pick up those sounds of those animatronics really well while cutting out the nice music...or certain frequencies of the music. As for them looking creepy...well sometimes on those POV vids they zoom in way too much and they do appear a little creepier than in real life. Also, not all cam pick up color very well inside with low light conditions. Even HD cams are limited in that department. A lot of people don't look into the low light settings of their camera. This can change how things "appear" when you watch it.

After all that, I don't think they are creepy and they aren't that loud. He will enjoy it!

Oops re-posting as I mis-read the question (Thanks Robo!). I don't find Splash too loud at all and I'm pretty sensitive to noise.

There are much louder things at WDW, but if you are sitting in the front car, the "bell" that rings at the start of "Heigh Ho" is really, really loud and triggered a migraine for me once (I have auditory triggered migraines from loud noises, especially of a high pitch). Now that I know that I just plug my ears if we are in the front car. Further back it's fine. I don't think anyone would consider that area creepy.

I'm lost.
"Heigh Ho?"

I don't think so. He's pretty good about telling me when he's scared. Another poster pointed out that cameras can be deceiving so I'll just see how it goes.

SM isn't very clear. Instead I propose we use 4 letters instead of 2. So instead of SM it should be abbreviated SP MT. That ought to clear things up.

I completely agree about YouTube. I always suggest people to check out attractions on YouTube. That way you know what you are in for. When you go to a fair or a theme park who focuses mainly on coasters you can generally see what an attraction is just by passing by. That is not the case for a lot of attractions at WDW. Some are completely outdoors but some are solely indoors and some are half and half...like with Splash you see the drop but most of the attraction is not visible from the outside.
Splash is one of our favorites...I wouldn't say the audio is out of whack as far as loudness, I would say it is average. I know with some vids on YouTube people have dubbed the actual audio (found on CDs and such) over their videos...if by chance you had clicked on one of those that might be why it seemed kind of loud (just a thought).
