Your unpopular birthday opinions?

That you should never invite someone to a party that they have to pay to attend or eat or participate in an activity. If you can’t afford to pay for the entire party and activities, do something cheaper or invite fewer people.

Cards aren’t a waste of money (my unpopular belief). They are a way to express sentiment when it’s hard to actually say the words. My DH is not sentimental but he’s given me some lovely cards saying what’s in his heart and it means the world to me. Recently we’ve been clearing out a lot of our possessions and found cards that made me cry. Cards from my Dad who has been gone for 30 years, telling me what a wonderful caring daughter I was, in his handwriting. 🥲 I also make cards and have a group of crafty friends who make cards. We make little works of art. It gives us joy.

Another day - my husband and I don’t exchange gifts or cards - we take fantastic vacations
We will go out to dinner but not too extravagant

Cards are a waste of money. It gets read and then never look at the again.
Yes to the ones with just a "Happy Birthday" and their signature. No if they write a personal, funny or touching message. I keep those forever.

1000x yes. In an age of nonsense social posts, emails and other digital crap that's deleted and/or forgotten minutes after viewing, a printed card with a heartfelt message of love or caring is truly a priceless gift. Especially when the author of that card has passed on.

I resent it when I'm invited to a birthday dinner and the venue is extravagantly expensive and far from where most guests live- just because that's where the birthday person likes to dine.

No regard for guests on a tight budget. We're expected to fund 100% of the cost of our evening, as well as pick up part of the birthday person's cost (with drinks, apps, dessert, the works) and bring gifts (from their published registry list, of course.) The whole thing turns me off.

I love celebrating people's birthdays, but I think people should be considerate and pick a moderately priced restaurant. I used to attend and resent it - now I just politely decline.

:confused3Invitations are not summonses; you're not obligated to go. If you don't like the way an event is organized, it's best you just politely decline. If you really want to celebrate the person, invite them yourself at another time to something that's affordable, like a coffee date, in honor of their birthday.
