Your lawn: mow yourself or hired service?

Do you hire a service for your lawn or mow yourself? If you don't mind sharing, how much do you pay for the service, or how long does it take you if you do it yourself?

I'm disgusted with my lawn service - they are out there in December when I don't really feel it needs it. I think I'm being taken for a ride!

If it was dry enough here, DH would have mowed the lawn this last weekend. With the warm weather, lawns still need care. Our grass is still green, in a place that is usually covered by many inches of snow this time of year.

$148 a month, 60 x 110 lot, plus and extra $400 or do for leaf disposal. Starting in November, no more mowing, just fall cleanup every 2 weeks or so.

We pay $80 a month. They come weekly in the summer and about every 2 weeks in the winter but the price is spread out throughout the year. That includes edging and trimming the trees in the front.

Nope, do it myself. Good exercise, I have the time, and it is a lot cheaper. Only takes me about 45-60 minutes to cut. My lot is only a half acre minus the house plus I don't want to deal with walking around inspecting what they did. I'm very anal about my yard, house, and vehicles. I do all my own maintenance and care. Plus, it is relaxing for me. When it starts to become a job or chore, I'll let someone else do it.

Prices, two years ago it would have cost me $35 per trip with trimming. Normally, my yard gets cut 2-3 times per week depending on rain and how often I put out the sprinklers. No leaf pickup for me, I burn or just mulch them over.

Do it ourselves. Currently our 17 yr old dd is in charge of lawn care. We have 3 acres, but only about 3/4 acre is grass. Takes her about 40 minutes including weed whacking.

I love mowing with a push but we have a really big yard so DH helps with the rider! :teeth:

I pay $99 a month. They mow and trim bushes once a week from March through November. December through February, they mow every other week. It takes them about ten minutes with a riding mower and a three man crew.

I used to do it myself, but I am getting too old and the heat, during the summer months, is to hard for me. It would take me an hour or more to do a relatively small yard.

$25 a week from May through November (cold autumn with no grass growth they may only cut through October)
$125 clean up in April
$175 clean up in December or end of November depending on how fast the leaves fall.

We have about 1/3 of an acre.

Service. $32 a week for 1/3 an acre with a large, steep grassy hill. Includes mowing and edging. They only come April through October. If you need extra service during the winter months, that is optional to schedule. Extras like leaf cleanup or aerating are $50 a visit. Fertilizing is extra too. We just opt for the mowing.

We used to have a lawn service but DH got tired of paying them in the winter for nothing. So, he bought himself a John Deere riding mower, with cup holder thank you very much, and is a happy little boy out there riding on his tractor. We live in Georgia so it is still lawn mowing time here. He does pay someone to trim the trees and buses about twice a year, he does it himself the rest of the time. The same guy puts new wood chips in about every other year.We live on almost two acres of land. DH does the weedeating and blowing himself, I think he does it because it gives him an excuse every year to go buy a bigger/better gadget.

For a couple years I paid $30 per cut, but since my Wife moved here and we had landscaping done I prefer to do it myself. I got one of those EGO electric mowers and I love it!

Thanks for the replies. Our lawn care has cost us $1428 this year + the additional visit they paid me today! Not sure what that will be. I think it's time for me to get out there and do it myself, maybe?

My yard is under an acre and we mow ourselves. Takes about an hour or so (once a week). My neighbor has a slightly smaller yard and she has a service. It's about $35 per mow and they are usually there once a week. They stopped sometime in Nov. but with the crazy warm weather she had to mow herself two weeks ago.

We rent, and the owner comes and does all the yard work. I feel really blessed.

I have done it for the past 30 Years. This year we hired a neighborhood kid, he was Ok. If he weed wacked it was because his weed whacker was working. When he started football in the fall we didn't see him again so I started doing it again. We gave him $30 when he did the lawn. I do it now up until last week ( We live on Long Island). I am on my fourth lawn Mower. The past few years, I gave up on those two cycle crap engines for blowing and weed whacking. I bought the battery operated kind and they work every time. Less power but they get the job done. When we move down to Florida (Hopefully soon) I will retire and use a service.

Surprisingly that more teenagers do not mow lawns for some extra money. Non existent in my neighborhood. I ask students all the time if they ever mow lawns to make money. Never get an affirmative response. Same when asked if they rake leaves or shovel driveways.

Myself (though my retired dad sometimes does it for me). 2.5 hours for the 3 acres I keep in yard, and another 3 hours to brush hog the 4.4 acres I have in pasture (cut that part a couple times a year). Another 45 minutes with the string trimmer, which I only do about every 3rd or 4th cutting.

I know my teen boys would never do it. Most people have landscapers in our neighborhood (except for a few senior citizens). 3 guys show up and have it done in less than 20 minutes and only charge $25. My kids would take hours to do it!!!!
