My oldest DD is 13. I need some book ideas for her. She likes mysterious, suspense type books, as well as books that tell a good story. Eventually, I think she will love Stephen King but I'm not sure i'm ready for that...unless you can think of a milder King book. She is not into romance, teen relationship books.

While we are at it. My 11 yr old DD likes Andrew Clements books...good story with a nice message. Any other good ideas for her? She has whipped though the Clements books.

Have you tried the Kingdom Keepers series? It's based in and on the surrounding area of WDW and is really a nice series for pre to young teens.

Yep...she read them.

Thanks...these books are definitely her type.

Oh give her Stephen King!

I still remember a story I read in Night Shift when I was like 8 or something.

I bet she'd like Needful Things, or Carrie, it's a classic!

I think "The Ranger's Apprentice" series is very good. I also really liked the "Fairy Wars" series. The Percy Jackson books are also a good series. If she likes things a little scary, the Vampire Plagues series is very good.

If you can get hold of them, Mary Stewart's "Crystal Cave" and the sequels are excellent.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Tamora Pierce. She has about 25 books with all the heroines being in their teens. Its on the Fantasy list if your daughter is in those things. I do alot of books on cds and rate all her series as rereadable. Rick Riodan also has a teen girl heroine in his Cane twin series

I don't get why not Stephen King? She is 13. What do you want her reading? at 13 they should be in adult books. I can see maybe not adult sex themes but not adult I don't get it.

I imagine she has read all the twilight series, My DS who just turned 13 has read and liked Jurassic Park -the book is better than the movie, The Tolkein series,
He really likes the Tom Clancy books.

I just asked DD 15 and she said The Hunger Games book series. She said they were excellent and perfect for a 13yo.

I started King books when I was in 7th grade, and I loved the few that I read before realizing that my heart was set on romance novels :). However, if you feel like she's not ready, then that's your choice. Have you ever just taken her to the bookstore and let her walk around and pick up what she is interested in? Thats how I find most of what I like.

I loved Hunger Games... DH read them and DS (13) is reading them now.... and can't put them down... you also might try The Looking Glass War series....James Patterson also writes books for tweens...

My daughter says Beautiful Creatures and Beautiful Darkness. She is now waiting to get Beautiful Chaos. She says they are kind of gothic sci fi (she says the characters are "casters," kinda like witches but not exactly. I don't know, I haven't read them .) She's twelve, btw.

Has she read Tolkein? That's where I was at, at that age.

My daughter (almost 15) loves horror movies and sci fi. I always loved Stephen King books, so last summer I suggested that she read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, which she loved, then she read some of the short stories collections.

She always likes to read in a series, and one series that she really enjoyed was the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz.

I totally agree with the beginning. I was reading adult books long before 13 but I also - as someone else mentioned - read whatever I felt like and wandered bookstores to find things. Though I have no problem with book recommenations for anyone. I assume this was just a random recommendation thread, not that the OP only allowed her kids to read books she gives them...?

Though that Jurassic Park the book is better than the movie is heresey. That violates my patented King/Chrichton inverse movie goodness theorem. Books by King > movies of the books by King. Books by Chrichton < movies of the books by Chrichton.

Also.... people who love their children do not let their children read Twilight.

She just asked me to put Percy Jackson on her Kindle...so you may be onto something.

I'm sure there are plenty of 13 yr old's that can read about a psycho lady that ties a man to a bed and breaks his legs with a sledge hammer (Misery) and not be phased by it. Heck, my DD is pretty solid when it comes to not being freaked out, but I want to make the jump to that type of horror. I wouldn't stop her from reading it if she asked, but I am not pushing it yet.

My DD has no interest in Twilight. I've asked her and she says she is not into the whole vampire thing?

Jess

PS..I love King and LOVED both Jurassic Park and Lost World.
