My grandaughters fifth birthday is coming up. I've been to Wal Mart, etc (although not much shopping in my town!!) I would like to get her something nice, possibly pertaining to outdoors, since I am the nature lover in the family, and would like to see her appreciate the outdoors as well! Can anyone give me some ideas for online stores? I've been to Smarterkids, got a bunch of musical stuff, but now I'm quite lost! Help????? Just want to stay away from the usual plastic stuff that just doesn't last!!!

What kind of outside stuff are you looking for? Camping stuff, picnicing stuff, insect observation stuff, gardening stuff, outside riding stuff?

I love the disc (frisbee) golf sets for outdoors.

:D Hi Maryp,
One online store I buy from a lot is www.amazon.com . Just go to the tab at the top of the page labeled toys and games. They have a section called toy outlet that has great deals and a lot of times free shipping. They also have toys r us, imaginarium, and an outdoor store. HTH!

Maybe one of those butterfly houses. You get the larvaes in the mail and watch them hatch into butterflies.......we really enjoyed ours.

Thank you, ladies, very helpful! I did see a real cute charm bracelet kit on Amazon, very neat! On Discovery they have an astronomy light that shines constellations on your ceiling, also very cool! I also will check out the butterfly thing, another great idea!

I'm not much help (I even have a 4 year old lol) but what a wonderful Grandmom you are!

Good luck!

Holycow

Thanks, holycow, I sure am trying! Grand children are the world's greatest gift!!! I know people who dread becoming grand parents, I truly feel sorry for them, they don't know what they are missing! Taking the two to VWL in Oct, can't wait!!

maryp - how nice! The best present that a grandmother can give a granddaughter is her time. How about a membership to a zoo or audubon society that you can use together - enjoying the outdoors. One day at our local gym I got to talking to this woman who was there watching the girls' gymnastic practice. She said she always gets her granddaughter gymnastic lessons for Christmas and it's something they do together every week. What a nice tradition for them (and a nice treat for the mom who doesn't have to drive her there every week, too!!) Just a suggestion.

Kasar, I beat you to it! We have a membership to Squam Lakes Science Center, don't know if you've heard of it in Mass, sort of a small "learning zoo," everything in a natural enviornment, a really neat place. My grandaughter and I do swimming lessons when we can time it to my schedule, when not, her mom takes her. She already swims better than I do!
Thanks for taking the time, such nice people on this board!

My dd's are getting older, so they receive gift certificates now. My mother makes a date with the birthday child, they spend the gift certificates and then Mom takes her to lunch. A nice tradition. Of course, you can always supply the certificate, if need be.
The best present that a grandmother can give a granddaughter is her time.
Amen!
