Last night while I was making my weekly trek to the dollar store (Dollar Tree to be exact) for paper goods and such, what did I see? Yes, K-cups, 3 in a package for $1. The only flavors I saw were Breakfast Blend and French Vanilla, so I grabbed a package of the FV and tried it this morning. DELISH!!! 33 cents a cup? The cheapest even on sale is around 45 cents. Gonna have to go back tonight and stock up. Maybe they will have some other flavors, I actually have 3 Dollar Trees on my way home so I'll stop at all of them!

I have to ask... how far out was the expiration date? Some of the items that are sold in the Dollar stores are close to, if not past the expiration or sell by date.

Does coffee even expire really?

Yes... coffee does expire. It deteriorates much faster when ground vs whole bean, but whole bean does go bad to.

Coffee beans have oils in them. As they age, they oxidize due to contact with the air / oxygen. Eventually those oils can spoil / go rancid. That is what can give coffee a bad taste. Even when in a sealed container, they will react with the air in the container and start to break down.

Try it yourself..... leave some ground coffee in an open dish for a week or two and then make a pot. Compare that to fresh from the can/bag and you will see the difference.

I was just wondering if coffee expired! I found a bag of Starbucks that expired 6 mos ago in the back of my cabinet, it is ground but hasn't been opened. My hit the Dollar Tree for K-cups, I don't care for flavored coffee much.

Didn't even look for an expiration date. I will tonight and check back, but quite frankly, I have purchased expired K cups from my supplier for $5 a box (24) and I have no problem with it. If it was a year, eh, not so sure, but it is sealed inside that cup with no air getting in it, no?

melpaul, those prices are ok. I usually purchase my coffee from a business supplier, they all sell water, I pay on the average $12.00 for a box of 24.

Anybody has experience with such refillable k-cups?

I use the Keurig and the Eco (?) it's red and is one piece. I like that one best because it's easier to empty and you don't have to remove the piece that holds them in your Keurig. I find it doesn't have as much "slugh" in the bottom of the cup when I use a courser grind in it.

I have the refillable K-Cup and I don't like it. It's just a pain to me. I do buy the K-Cups at several discount stores. Big Lots often has them. Remember to register your brewer on Keurig Website and you will get a discount code for two boxes when you buy two boxes. KEY: Only allowed to register three brewers per email address. (I have lots of brewers at different offices.) Another thing to remember is that just because your warranty is expired, doesn't mean you shouldn't give Keurig a call if your brewer screws up.

I found the same three packs at my local Dollar Tree yesterday. They are a brand I've never heard of Cafe Enhanca, made by DreamPak. They all have expiration dates of 2/14 or later. Haven't tried them yet so I can't tell you how they taste.

I posted in a post further down...Costco has their own light roast Kirkland blend for 37cents /k cup. 100 in the box.

Make sure they are not like the Walmart ones which are just instant coffee packaged in kcups. They will clog your machine. What brand are they?

We use the one that came with the Platinum, and we bought 3 ekobrews. Love them! Makes a really really good cup of coffee (we're finally using the right amount of coffee for a cup), is super-easy to fill and use. The MyKCup one isn't as easy to pre-fill, but it's not hard to use. The Ekobrews are just easier. :)

While I did love the Emeril's k-cups that came with the Platinum and I miss that coffee, filling with our own chosen coffee has been GREAT.

I saw your post and was about to answer 'food pantry??'

We volunteer at a food pantry regularly, and last month the county gave us a crate of K-cup coffees to distribute. We stood around wondering how many of our clients had $200 coffee machines lying around waiting to use these guys. If no one takes them next distribution they might end up in gift baskets we auction for fundraisers.

They really do seem to be everywhere anymore! ;)

Just an FYI. 2 years ago I bought a couple of candy bars at the local dollar as we were headed to a matinee movie. When the kids opened them and started to eat, they commented on the funny taste. Sure enough, the candy had a chemical taste. They were not past expiration, but likely stored in the back near the cleaning supplies. I don't believe the dollar stores are subject to the same regulations grocery stores are. I make it a point to never buy anything edible from a dollar store. The occasional glad ware or gift bags, but that's about it.
