Hi, I just happened to find this thread. I am ready to start selling some things on eaby and have a question if anyone can help.

How do you all go about using the reserve price option. I am worried that if I do not use that option on some things that I will not get what I should for something. Lets say for example I have a Gucci purse, I would like to get at least $50 for I don't want it to go for $10. Can anyone give me som info on this?

Hello.. just a question for anyone that might be able to help.. I took a break from selling on ebay for a few months and now Im ready to get back to it to put some money back for our upcoming trip.. My problem is that all of the sudden when I am doing my listing and downloading my picture of the item selling it says the file is too big and it wont accept it.. This never used to happen to me before so I dont know what to do.. I tried doing several different items and get the same message.. Can anyone walk me thru what I need to do? Please keep in mind Im not a big computer person..

You could try saving it at a different size, like 640 X 800.

For everyone using pictures:

I just found a great site that will shrink your picture's size without changing the look of the picture. Go to www.jpegwizard.com. About halfway down the page click the Browse button and select your image. At the bottom of the page click Submit (you can ignore all the stuff in the middle unless you know what it means!). The program will then shrink the size of your picture in several different ways. To save it, right click on top of it and select save picture as. Then use that new smaller picture to upload to ebay.

and click on one of my auctions to see the banner. It was like 190K and this program shrank it to 20K or something. In fact, if someone using a slow dial up could report back to me how long (in general) the banner takes to load I'd be much obliged.

I am trying to get up the nerve to start this weekend.

Reserve is easy to use. When you set up your auction, you start your opening bid low, and then in the reserve price area put in the reserve price (the least amount you will allow the item to sell for). Then when people bid, they will see You are the highest bidder but have not met the reserve amount. They will not know what the reserve amount is. When someone bids to your reserve amount, it will say reserve met.

Reserve auctions cost a little more, but they can be worth it. People will gain interest in your auction if it's a popular item that is starting at a low price. Sometimes they bid up just to see if they hit the reserve price. One time I was selling a ring for my sister. We put it up at $2000, and no one bid on it. We relisted it with a reserve of $2000 but starting bidding at $100. It sold for $2100.

Keep in mind your insertion fee is based on the reserve price, not the first bid price.

Hi all, Dh and I jumped into doing EBAY a few weeks ago and have listed and sold over 100 items, with more coming up. Everything has gone well, except for a couple of disputes. I would like to hear from regular Ebayers about how to handle these situations in the future. One auction item was completely described and the pictures were accurate, the buyer send payment immediately, we shipped same day. All good so far, but then the buyer wrote saying they weren't happy with item and wanted a refund. On two auctions we agreed to a refund in order to avoid neg. feedback and chalked it up to the cost of doing business, but how do we avoid this from happening in the future. We are very upfront about our auctions and never misrepresent items as being better than they are, so I'm not sure what else we can do. Any suggestions? or does this just happen occasionally and I need to expect it. Thanks.

I apologize for asking this again, but someone a while back had a good suggestion for packaging & mailing record albums, and I can't remember now what they suggested. I've scrolled through about 20 pages now.... figured it was probably easier just to ask again. I have a bunch of record albums that I am selling and would like to know how to package them safely. It looks like one of the bidders may end up with about 20 albums that I will need to combine into one package. The others will probably be multiples of 2 or 3 albums. These are the 12" LP's, and I'll be sending them media mail.

Our post office was TOTALLY OUT of Priority Mail boxes. All Sizes. It really put a kink in my plans. I wonder if they will have more today??

You should just order them from the usps website! they're free and they come flat so its easy to store them. I find that i use alot of the #7 size and larger box so i just keep a supply on hand---free tape too!

I know, I just don't have any place to put them. The boxes of eBay stuff that are waiting to "be processed" is already enough to drive me mad!!

i know what you mean. I was supposed to be cleaning out and it seems like i'm just ADDING TO the mess! i keep saying i'm going to organize a shelf of just mailing materials but i haven't done that yet! not to mention, stuff that i get in the mail, i save THOSE boxes too!

Hi all!! THANK YOU so much for this thread. I finally got my nerve up to sell on ebay and listed my first item. It is a mortorcycle that we really need to sell (have to pay for pre school for 3 kids). Anyway, it is so confusing and so much to learn about selling, especially a vehicle. Well I had some questions I was trying to get answered after I made my listing and I went onto the ebay chat room. I could not believe how nasty those people were. they pratically shredded my for asking the questions I had and told me I completely runined myself by listing my item at a reserve price. I guee they forget that at one time they were in my shoes and were inexperienced at selling.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for being so nice and answering my questions.

And as for the reserve price, I have had many emails for people who want to know what my reserve price is, should I tell them that? How should I handle it? I also had someone email and asked how much I wanted for it and they could be here within 24hours with cash.

I would definitely let people know your reserve price if they ask. As for the person who says they can be there within 24 hours with the cash, I would tell them the reserve price and ask them to just go ahead and bid if they are interested in the motorcycle.

FYI, the USPS has discontinued free priority mail and express mail tape. I think it is already off the USPS website (if not, it will be real soon!). you might be able to get a roll or three at your local post office.

at the post office i work at, we found out about the discontinuation of the tape the day before we did it. we were able to order 100 rolls of the prioriity mail tape, so if a customer asks us, we have a few extra

I read this on another board, but no details were given. Is the USPS only discontinuing the free tape or all Priority and Express shipping materials?

Dont worry, they are only discontinuing the tape. The USPS will still provide free priority and express mail boxes, envelopes, and labels. The USPS is also going to come out with a flat rate priority mail box in the next few months.... You only pay $7.70 for any amount of weight that can fit in the box. (excellent deal for heavy items going CA to NY or vice versa )
