Yup my Uncle Ed resides “over there” with a few thousand of his buddies. My Uncle moved to France in 1945. Even though there was quite a long line to get in he was able to get a great spot. (the only bad thing was ….. he had to pay dearly for his little slice of heaven)

My Uncle Ed was the youngest of 5 children. He was one of my mother’s two brothers. My mother always said that her sons got their tallness and good looks from my Uncle Ed. “You are going to be tall just like your Uncle Ed and the girls are all going to go crazy over you” is what we heard while growing up. (well at least the tall part was right) I think I posted this in a reply to Eros once…I posted that no matter how successful our family members became…we have … doctors, lawyers, teachers, professors, engineers…no matter how much education we obtained…masters, PhD’s, MD’s… we must always remember the most successful member of the family…the family member who had the most important job of all….Uncle Ed. He made the ultimate sacrifice for the us and the world.

I just recently found out the details of his death..it turns out that he died after VE day. He fought in and survived major battles in Europe and North Africa. He was returning from the field with his men when a sniper killed him. The sniper apparently didn’t know Germany surrendered.

We always wondered why my mother and aunts were so “over the top” protective of their children… needing to know if we reached our intended destinations safe and sound. (“call me the minute you get there”)(even to this day) It turns out that my grandmother, my mother and aunts were rejoicing dancing in the streets along with everyone else with the news that the war was over in Europe and the boys would soon be on their way home. After the celebrations my grandmother received a knock on her door..it was an army Chaplin and Captain informing her and the family that Uncle Ed wouldn’t be coming home…….

Uncle Ed is not alone “over there” his cousin is buried (or his name is just listed on the unknown memorial) in another cemetery in France. He was a decorated Air Force pilot who was lost over Germany in a heavy bombing raid of oil refineries and aircraft factories. He died exactly one year before my Uncle Ed.

Let’s remember all those brave men and women who gave their lives fighting for freedom. (don’t forget the ones who never made it back to American soil)

God bless them and God Bless America!

God Bless our BRAVE troops all over the world.

Thanks, Charlie, I've appreciated this one in the past, a good one again.

Thanks for that touching story and thanks to your Uncle Ed. Let's hope all of the "Uncle Ed's" overseas come home soon and safe.

Charlie. *sigh* We just miss you lots. {{{Hug}}} Hopefully one day you and your family, the Zurgs and WillyJ and I can all meet up at Madam Marie's in Asbury Park. It's a dream.

Great thread, Charlie. {{{Hugs}}}

Well, the cops finally busted Madam Marie.
For tellin' fortunes better then they do.

God bless America and God bless your uncle Ed and all of the other men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

My Father's cousin lives there too. Dad was just telling me the story today. The kid came from an abusive family (his dad beat him) - he enlisted, went off, and after his very first battle was killed. :(

Thanks Charlie. I just finished taking care of my lawn, and was a bit tired. After reading your post, I'm relieved..... relieved thinking that all of those "Uncle Ed's" died so I could enjoy something so simple as raking my lawn.

Excuse me while I interrupt this beautiful thread just for one second. Sorry. :o I just wanted to ask DukeStreetKing if he ever went slow dancing in the dark on the beach at Stockton's Wing? :p ;)

Okay ... back to this very touching thread by the wonderful charlie,nj. :wave:
