We are back from our 6th summer trip to Hilton Head. Cant wait to go back! Heres our long trip report with a couple of pictures thrown in along the way.
We staying in building 30 second floor. We had no maintenance issues. I hope we werent noisy for our downstairs neighbors. We never heard or saw them and tried to remind our DS6 that he needed to use quiet feet early in the morning and later in the night.
We did the shrimp boil on Thursday night and enjoyed it a lot. We love the gumbo and will return again next summer for more.
A lady on the beach pointed us to the Kite Shop in Coligny we finally found a couple of kites which were easy to get up and fly on the beach. This has always been a challenge in the past but we have now conquered that problem. Our DS11 enjoyed flying his several times. I happened to catch a casual picture of him:
Our favorite activities have always been done with Captain Scott. This year, we went shark fishing again. We caught probably a dozen sharks and two sting rays. One of them was so large that it bent the hook straight as it was near the boat! Very incredible animals! A couple of sharks were good size about 40. Definitely exciting enough to get the blood flowing.
One of the sharks they caught:
This was the smaller of the two sting rays. It was flopping back and forth on it's way in. It happens to be upside down in this shot:
We also did the beach combing trip out to Dufuskie Island. We found a lot of sand dollars, star fish and shells. Sadly, there were a lot of dead horseshoe crabs along the higher part of the beach. Scott thought it was because they get caught in the nets on the shrimp boat. Still sad to see.
I love when the dolphins come right up to the boat:
This was the first year that in addition to crabbing off the pier, we purchased a fishing pole and fished from there as well. We caught some crabs on the line, as well as several fish (Whitings, maybe?), a small shark, and a small sting ray. One day, my DS6 pulled up a huge flounder in his crab net. It must have been about 12 as it took up the entire bottom of the crab net. Very cool to see.
DS's flounder:
What they think is a whiting -- not sure if that's correct or not.
DS11's stingray caught from the pier at the resort:
I think my DH actually caught this baby:
We enjoy the beach but not as much this year as in the past. The kids watched the movie Jaws a couple weeks back and I think that spooked them a bit. So, a lot of our time was spent in the two pools. My favorite time of day to swim was around 9 p.m. in the Big Dipper pool. The crowd was gone by then and the water was warm enough to enjoy without that nip in the air.
We rented bikes during the week from Patriot Bike Rentals as Disney was out of bikes. They do not price match with Disney so they were a bit more expensive than renting directly with Disney. On a positive note, their bikes are brand new and very smooth. They delivered and picked up right from the resort. Rental couldnt have been any easier.
We heard from another family about the Fresh Market a little bit down from the resort. They are a higher end grocery store and one afternoon we headed over there and purchased some filet mignon kabobs. They were awesome! Well definitely be back for more of the same next trip.
