Well, I figured it's time to start my trip report before I forget anymore of the details from our amazing Make A Wish trip! It was a trip that created so many wonderful memories and helped erase some of the uglier medically related ones from the past.

Before I go any further, the reason the wish trip was granted, I copied this from his ptr.

I'll start with Joey's story ...

Last September Joey had a cold, he got over it except for the cough, it had been lingering for about a month. Then one weekend he had a high fever and was very lethargic. It was a long weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving) so I waited until Tuesday to take him to the clinic. He didn't seem all that sick, but I wanted to be sure he didn't have pneumonia or H1N1 which was very active at the time. The doctor sent him for a chest x-ray and after I pointed out that he had bruised eyelids (which I thought were caused by the high fever) and a couple of small bruises on his chest he sent him for blood work as well.

By lunchtime I was done at the lab and picked up my other kids and headed home. When we walked in the door the phone was ringing, it was the doctor and he told me it looked like Joey had leukemia, to go to the local hospital and that we would be flown to the Children's Hospital (about 4 hours away) that day for a stay of about 7-10 days. I tearfully said goodbye to our other kids (who stayed with an amazing friend who would continue to "mother" them while I was away with Joey) and headed to the hospital.

That evening Joey was admitted to the Children's Hospital and by midnight that night he was in the PICU sedated, intubated and a ventilator was breathing for him due to respiratory distress. Joey spent 6 days in the PICU before returning to the oncology ward where he remained an in-patient for the next 5 months.

Joey was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia which is not the typical childhood leukemia and during treatment was further diagnosed with a gene mutation within the leukemia cells that meant he needed to have a stem cell transplant as he wasn't responding to chemo alone. We have 3 other children, but none of them were a match, thankfully a donor was found and after tons of chemo and total body radiation Joey had his transplant on Feb 15/2010.

About a month after transplant Joey was discharged from the hospital, but we were not allowed to return home for another 2 1/2 months. So Joey and I lived at Ronald McDonald House and continued to enjoy visits from my husband and our other kids every weekend they could.

Early on in treatment Joey's oncologist told him that when he was all done he could "make a wish" and that some kids wish to go to Disneyworld and while they are there they stay at a village where you can eat icecream for breakfast! Well, Joey wouldn't consider anything else for his wish as Dr.Rod had told him he could go to Disney. That's fine with us we are all looking forward to a magical week togther!

That's Joey's story (in a nutshell of course) and also explains my username. Our family consists of myself (Lynette), my husband (Kelly), Samantha (12), Isaac (9), Shaelyn (7) and our baby and wish child Joey (4)

Here's Joey celebrating 100 days post stem cell transplant.

And a picture of our family...

Our trip began really early, we got up at 4am to get to the airport for a 7am flight. We loaded up our truck the night before and set tons of alarms. We managed to get everyone up, out and to the airport on time and without a hitch! We were all so excited!!!:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:
When we got to the airport, we checked in and got through security very quickly and then proceeded to the gate to wait. We took this photo while we were waiting, the first of hundreds! :)

The flight to Calgary was uneventful :woohoo:. We collected our luggage and proceeded through security again and also customs as we were now headed non-stop to Orlando! As they were doing the pre-flight announcements, they mentioned there was a special little boy on the flight that was on a Wish Trip, Joey just beamed! On this flight we got seats in sets of twos. Kelly and I each sat with one of the younger kids and our older 2 sat together. When we got off the plane Samantha and Isaac told us they were offered (and accepted) snacks about 10 times - they wanted something to eat but not anymore bits and bites!!! The stewardesses were taking extra good care of them I guess. Here's a picture of us in Calgary airport.

We got to Orlando around 7:30pm and had no problem finding our greeter (but sadly in our excitement of finally getting there forgot to take a picture!). He helped us get our luggage and rental car and we were on our way to Give Kids the World Village!

When we arrived we were given some basic information and 2 big bags of dinner from Katie's Kitchen. They knew we would be coming late and thought we might be hungry. Then the volunteer escorted us to our village and we dug in to the still warm yummy food!

We headed to bed as soon as we were done eating, it was only 7:30pm back home, but after a full day of travelling it was easy to believe it was actually 10:30pm and crawling into bed felt great.

Let me just start by saying that before we left home we decided we were not going to be able to see and do everything, so instead of running ourselves ragged trying, we decided to take the whole trip at a relaxed pace and just enjoy it. That meant not setting alarms (except to make the flight home) and just generally not rushing around all week.

Monday morning, we woke up around 7:30am, got ready and headed out for breakfast. What better way then to start our trip with ice cream, so banana splits for breakfast it was!

I love this picture! After Joey dug in with such gusto, it was only about 2 bites and he had this look of ,"how am I ever gonna finish this!"

He only managed to eat about a third of it and then it was time to move on with our day. I went to the orientation for 9am while Kelly and the kids did some exploring. When I was done I found them quickly with the help of others as they were able to tell me where the other "things"were. (We realized very quickly that it was actually quite beneficial to wear matching shirts as it was easy to find each other!) They were in line to meet Mickey & Minnie, I made it just in time as we were next!

After that we headed back to our villa, got organized to head to Universal Islands of Adventure and then went to Katie's Kitchen for lunch. As soon as we were done eating we headed to the park. We only got to about 1/2 the park before we decided to head back to GKTW for dinner and the all important stop at Wal-Mart for snacks for the rest of the week.

Here's some pictures from the Seuss area of IOA.

We ate dinner and then headed to the pool as Joey was sooooo excited about going swimming. He had his central line in his chest removed only 10 days before our trip after having it in for 13 months, and this was the first time he had an opportunity to swim!

After a fabulous first day we headed to bed with plans to head to Epcot in the morning.

I'm in!! You have a beautiful family and Joey sounds like an amazing little man.

Great first day! :thumbsup2 I like that you decided to just take it easy and relax. That makes things so much easier for anyone, IMO.

The Mickey & Minnie pic is too cute and that Dr Seuss area looks too fun! I haven't been there in ages and forgot how adorable those fish are.

Can't wait to hear about Epcot! :goodvibes

Count me in! I love the picture of Joey with Mickey and Minnie! It should be a billboard, it is so full of fun and magic. Sums up GKTW!

I have troubles sometimes with getting the pics from photobucket to be the size I intended, but I left this one bigger on purpose, it's certainly gonna be a lifetime favourite picture!

Good looking family you have. Picture with Mic and Min priceless.

Joining in on the fun.:cool1:

Hoping to get mine started today or tomorrow!!:surfweb:

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments! With that behind me, I'll keep going on my trip report! :flower3:

Tuesday morning we headed to the Gingerbread House for breakfast. The kids were so excited about the waffles with strawberries and whip cream that they ate loads. One of our daughters can't do gluten and she was thrilled that they were able to give her gluten free pancakes and waffles! We all ate until we could eat no more and then we went back to our villa to get ready for Epcot.

Here's a picture from our photopass CD when we first entered the park, the photographer had us do the "mouse ears"!

We enjoyed Epcot, but we really didn't see much of it. We rode Test Track - our favourite, Soarin', Mission Space, Living with the Land and the Nemo ride. We also went to Turtle Talk with Crush and walked through Mexico to get to China to meet Mulan. By this time it was late in the afternoon and Joey was spent, although we felt a bit uncomfortable doing it, we used our "magic gktw button" to jump the line. Mulan spent a lot of time talking to our kids and especially Joey.

Sometime in the afternoon, we stopped to buy cold treats from a cart. It cost $20 for our family to each get a treat. When we were done our trip we realized this was the only time we bought any food in the parks! The rest of the time we ate two meals at GKTW and snacked through the third. We didn't spend a ton of time in the parks each day and while we were there we didn't want to take the time to go get something to eat when we could just grab a snack from the bag in our stroller instead.

I had to take a picture when I realized the kids treats (with the exception of the frozen banana) matched their shirts!

After meeting Mulan we headed back to GKTW. It was a pool bbq party at the village, so we had burgers and then Joey was anxious to go swimming again. With another great day in the books, we went back to our villa for showers and some sleep.

Wednesday we started our day with breakfast at the Gingerbread House and again ate way more then we should have! Then we headed over to the horseback riding corral. Although the ride was short the kids all thoroughly enjoyed it! It was the first time the youngest 3 had ever been on a horse.

After we were done with that we headed over to the playground to check it out. We were in a villa far from the playground, so this was the first we saw of the park. The kids had a great time running around checking everything out.

By this time, it was time for lunch, so we went to Katie's Kitchen again and enjoyed a picnic in the sunshine. I'm quite sure we got ice cream again after lunch, but I don't remember for sure - we stopped in for ice cream and milkshakes a lot!

After lunch we went back to our villa to give Joey a nap and then headed to the Magic Kingdom! :dance3: We had plans to stay until the park closed at 8pm and wanted to be sure Joey would have enough energy to make it.

Magic Kingdom was by far our favourite park, we didn't ride too many rides as we wanted to watch the Electric Parade and the special Wishes fireworks show. We also really enjoyed meeting characters and getting their autographs.

Joey did fine and we left with the crowds at 8pm, it took us about 20 minutes to get onto the packed monorail. We drove back to GKTW, got the kids to bed and then ordered pizza to our villa - what a treat!

Love the picture of Joey on the horse!!! Sounds like you guys are having a great time so far!!

Loving your trip report! Sounds like you all had a blast, and I love that horse pic too!

:woohoo: Yeah I am so glad you started your trip report. I hope got lots of autographs.
