Just for kicks I just did a search on the painkiller I've been taking since my knee replacement surgery on December 18th. For some reason (maybe because of the drugs?), I didn't put together that oxycodone would be a generic name for OxyContin...the highly addictive narcotic that goes for about $20 a pill on the street.

I knew it had codeine in it, but didn't think much of it. I've had hydrocodone before, but now I'm worried about becoming addicted to my pain medication.

If your worried about being addicted then stop taking it. I don't mean to sound harsh, but I hate pain medication and only took it for 2 days after my back surgery a couple of years ago. DH is the same way, took only minimal amounts of pain medication after neck and knee surgery. Of course, we both have a pretty high pain tolerance, so that could have something to do with it too! I really wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you don't take it for an extended amount of time.

I'm not that worried about becoming addicted and don't take it anywhere close to the allowed dosage (two pills every 6 hours...WHEEE!). I just can't believe I didn't make the connection between oxycodone and OxyContin. It was a big deal here a few years ago because someone I went to high school with died from an overdose.

You know how much money you could make selling that to your students?

(I am ONLY joking people, I know that is the WRONG thing to do ;))

You want wrong? I considered handing it out to the noisy ones! ;)

Hmmmm....wonder if they'll prescribe that for my DD's MIL when she has her knee replacement surgery on January 12th? And for how long?

If it zips her lips or knocks her out, her DH will be hitting the street corners looking for MORE!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

If I take two pills, I'm out for a good 3 or 4 hours. If I take just one, I'm just loopy.

Don't worry. I took it for quite a while for a herniated disc (I'm thinking I took it for about 3 or 4 weeks). It helped a lot. I liked the feeling a lot, but still I didn't feel the least bit addicted and when the pain was better, I was able to stop right away, with still a few pills left.

Oh, and I'm from the camp where if you have moderate to severe pain, you should take medication for it. There's no sense in stressing your body out trying to deal with it without medication. Of course there are instances where people shouldn't, but I don't get the "there's no way I'm going to take pain medication" people.

If you are really worried about it, only take it if the pain you are feeling warrants it in your opinion. Pain is very difficult to quantify which is why pain meds are so hard to dose.

Otherwise, you might ask your doctor if he can prescribe a prescription dose ibuprofen and see if that works for you first. If not, go back to the oxycodone, but it might be worth a try.

But really, I wouldn't worry about it...since you seem aware of yourself. :goodvibes

Well, I'm getting ready to take a pill (just one!), so I'll not be responsible for any other posts you see from me in the next few hours. :hippie:

Until you have knee replacement surgery, please do not suggest that someone stop taking their pain medication. It is important that the patient be as comfortable as possible so as to cooperate and participate in physical therapy. Knee replacement surgery ranks up there as perhaps one of the most painful surgeries there is. I am nominating shoulder surgery up there as well. I also took oxycontin, AND dilaudid in the days following surgery. I have no desire to take them now. I am over that acute painful period. I take percocet on my PT days. I don't like, it makes me nauseous but my shoulder is encapsulated and I have RSD and I need to fully participate in my physical therapy so I will be ready for the major league spring training in 46 days. I don't think I will be ready for pitchers and catchers but one never knows.

NSAIDs are often not permitted following many types of surgery that involve invading the bone. They inhibit osteoclast formation. When one is using narcotics for severe pain control, addiction is not a concern. I couldn't wait to not need oxycontin and I don't miss it. Who wants to be constipated. ;)

When patients take narcotics for severe pain relief, addiction is not a concern. When people take narcotics to alter their mood, then that is a concern.

actually i think

Oxycotin and oxycodone are two seperate meds of varying strengths...

One of my co-workers just had her leg bone cut (above the knee) and reset and told me she takes one of those during the day and then the other script at night (so that one is the stronger of the two)

If you truly have a reason to take them...do so...

I have been taking Hydrocodone (yeah vicodin) 7.5/750 off and on for the last three years to help me through a back issue (L5-S1 nerve pinch). It gets really bad certain times of the year (weather depending too) and i need to take more than 1 pill a day. More often, they give me a script for one month and it lasts me for 3-4 months. The dr knows i'm using it sparingly so doesn't have a problem giving it to me.

I don't use it every day...Just when i really need it.

You didn't mention whether you had a knee replacement or just some kind of scope. As a therapist, I've seens thousands of people with knee surgeries and they are painful!! Knee replacements can be painful for up to 3 or 4 months after surgery so I wouldn't worry about it since your surgery was so recent.

Also will you be having physical therapy? Pain meds are necessary to dull the pain enough to fully participate in and make progress in therapy.

My doctor gave me both Vicodin and Percocet following my surgery last Wednesday. I took a Vicodin the first night, but nothing since. I don't like that drugged feeling.

Oxycodone is the generic for Percocet, I believe... My DD was given it after wisdom teeth removal and I was given it to take when I have bad migraines that don't respond to my other Rx meds (I can get a migraine that last for days, even with Maxalt). I have also taken it for my gallbladder pain and it works nicely. :)

My DH has this prescribed following his knee surgery in November. He took only 1 pill and hated the way it made him feel. He never took anymore -- only extra strength Tylenol. That stuff's waaaaay too strong.
