Tonight was open house and she is in 8th grade. They announced tonight that the homework hotline has been discontinued by the district due to cost and that the other resource we had was also discontinued, but they are working on a new system and hope to have it in place soon. Lots of moans groans and complaints from parents in the room. Lead teacher gets up and tells the room that by 8th grade the parents should NOT be checking out every aspect of their childs school work, they need to learn responsibilty for it themself otherwise they will not have an easy adjustment into highschool next year. The teacher went on to say that they expect every child to write assignments in their agenda, they have a specific time at the start of each class to do so, but teachers are no longer making sure each child writes in the agenda. If a child is having troubles the ENTIRE team of teachers is available from 8:35am until 9:05 am to take phonecalls or have one on one meetings. They will come in early and stay late to help their students succeed, but they will not baby them anymore. Some parents still complained but I was thinking good for them!

She has a really great set of teachers this year, they all seem very nice and easy to talk too....and they really seem to care about the kids. This is a transition year for the kids, last year of middle school, high school looming in the near future, I'm so happy her teachers are working to make that smoother for them. :teeth:

I would be thinking just like you! Sometimes we baby them and that does NO good!

My DS8 is in 3rd grade, and I know for a fact that his teacher doesn't check his agenda, because he does it all from memory...there is rarely anything written down in it. He of course doesn't have as much to write down as an 8th grader, but I wish she would help him out a little bit. He inherited my scatterbrain/forgetful gene, but throughout my trying experiences with it, I write EVERYTHING down. Now I just have to remember where I wrote it!

I hope your daughter doesn't get in trouble,
Mr Bush sez it's unacceptable to think.

This is all fine and good but in the real world, there ARE kids that for what ever reason just can't seem to get their act together, like my oldest. They have had a planner to use since 4th grade. We go over and over and over with him the importance of using such planner, we hope SOME day that will sink in. It is completly and totally frustrating as a parent. I for one like online gradebooks/homework lists. DS14 is in high school and ALL of his teachers post homework online. It is just one way for the parents to make sure things are getting done.

Our twins are in 6th grade and they also have the same homework/grade system but we rarely check theirs because we know they are responsible and remember their homework, etc. The back up is nice though!
