well my mum jumped in with both feet and looks like were going to florida staying in a villa on the 21st dec till 4th jan, the worse time for going to any parks from what i've read :):):)

I would like to visit the parks to see the decorations and things but i'm now wondering what tickets to get as i don't want to get tickets for the 2 weeks and not be able to go on anything in the parks without lining up for hours.

I was also wondering if there's any good places to go to eat on xmas day outside of Disney.

We've been to Florida over Xmas 3 times - 2006, 2010 and 2013.

I would disagree when you say it's the worse time - you just have to expect not to be able to ride on everything and queue a little longer than normal. I've not used the new FP+s, so I can't comment on how that will affect touring for onsite, or offsite guests.

Christmas at Disney is amazing, just the atmosphere alone is practically worth it!

We have been to Ponderosa for Xmas dinner - however, I find that American's don't celebrate Christmas in the way we do, eg close shops for the day/ need to book xmas dinner.

I have 2 trip reports on my Xmas trips - 2010 http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2639882

and an unfinished 2013 one (still going, slowly!)

Hope that helps

We've been the two weeks around Christmas. It is insanely busy but one thing doesn't change. Most people can't get up early on holiday. And they open the parks at 7am Christmas week. So. As long as you can get up early you can still do things quite easily with a decent touring plan. If you plan on wandering into the parks at lunch time I'd stay home instead because you will just meet a sea of people soup.

I'm glad I did it once and would encourage everyone to go once. The declarations are cool. The MK party is cool. Osborne Lights are very cool. The atmosphere is great.

But it is mobbed and don't believe anyone who says otherwise. You need to expect it and plan for it.

The days of New Year's Eve quieten down. Does depend what day NYE is though. If it's a Friday that's not so good!

We love yo go to MK on Xmas Eve. we won't go in until later, perhaps book to have a tea at CP, it is really busy, but we stay until the park closes and it is great. The crowds do disperse after the fireworks and you can get on the rides, we really enjoy it.

As PP said, rope drop us always a bonus. If the weather is colder a lot of the locals won't go and that will make it a bit better. Some years we have seen 4 hour waits for the rides :sad2:

On Christmas Day we normally book one of the Disney hotel restaurants so we don't have to go into the parks :)

Have a lovely time, we love going at Christmas.

We went to Discovery Cove on Christmas day as it's guaranteed crowd control! It was a risk though. Orlando December weather can be schizophrenic. We had 70 degrees on Christmas day which was okay. For three days of that same trip though we were in wooly hats, coats and gloves!

We spent our first holiday at WDW last year and had a fantastic time. We decided on Christmas dinner at Gaylord Palms Villa de Flora after it was recommended to me on this board. It was great, plenty of food and we booked tickets for ICE afterwards. My children loved it being so cold on Christmas Day.

Although we stayed on site and had tickets for Disney parks, our favourite place for Christmas was Seaworld. It was AMAZING and in my opinion knocked spots off Disney at Christmas. The shows were the best I have seen in Florida and O'Wondrous night made me cry it was so moving! We booked a kids go free package on the Seaworld website and it worked out so much cheaper than just buying tickets from the UK. It also gave us accommodation at the Renaissance just next to seaworld parking lot and 14 days admission to Seaworld and Aquatica. It was a fantastic hotel, very spacious rooms and all recently renovated. We didn't actually stay there, however we checked in before Seaworld opened, dropped off swimming costumes and warm clothes for the evening and grabbed our front of line passes(also included in the package). When it got too hot and we started flagging soon after lunch, we returned to the hotel, enjoyed the lovely pool and kids splash area, had showers and headed back refreshed for an amazing evening.

Being able to stay until the end was an amazing experience. If we would have left earlier it wouldn't have been the same. We were last on the Polor express train and had the simulator and Santa all to ourselves! we saw all the shows, another favourite was the ice skating show with all the dancing trees in the background finished off with fireworks. We then walked amongst the thousands of tiny lights in the trees, through a desserted Seaworld back to the entrance where the elves mesmerised my children and made up a dance with them. I'll never forget them sat talking about them on Christmas Eve as if they were good friends of theirs.

When we left, the snow was falling and the Christmas songs playing. A memory that will live with us all forever. My only regret - not doing it on Christmas Eve.

The other thing we LOVED was visiting Celebration. We got there just before dusk for the children to play, then as it got dark the music started to play and the 'snow' started to fall. We sat at the bakery and watched all the children play as the horse drawn carriages ride past. Afterwards we drove around taking in the magnificent houses decorated for Christmas.

We started our Christmas Eve, evening at the Grand Floridian, seeing Mickey and Minnie in their Christmas finery, smelling the gingerbread house as we wandered around, listening to the band and soaking up the atmosphere. We also did a horses drawn 'Sleigh' ride at the Fort Wilderness campground looking at all the Christmas lights at the camp grounds! it was such a lovely thing to do. We did book this up though as soon as we were able to via WDW reservations and we didn't pay as much as you pay on the day. It does book up quickly.

Another thing we enjoyed doing Christmas Eve morning was to make the gingerbread house up that we had bought at Walmart. The whole family got involved and it was a great thing to do. On Christmas Eve all the resorts have a gingerbread house competition for the different departments - housekeeping, front desk, maintenance etc and you have to vote for your favourite.

We also enjoyed visiting all the resorts in the evenings to see the gingerbread houses, carousel etc, meet the characters in their Christmas costumes and to hear the carol singers. I think the resorts themselves are far more Christmassy than the parks. Having said that though, Epcot was great and we were able too around the world (so to speak) listening to all the Christmas traditions told by the santa's in their traditional costumes.

The one thing you will encounter though during Christmas week, staying in a villa will be the traffic!! On site, you are reasonably OK. It when we ventured outside WDW the traffic was terrible and it would take us an hour to do a journey that would otherwise take 10 minutes, unless it was at 8.30am!

Saying that though, it's a small price to pay for such an amazing experience. I'd do it again in a flash.

Have an amazing time and enjoy the planning!

Re the above post. We went to the Grand Floridan too, but Christmas Day evening, not Christmas Eve. I agree with the sentiment though it was magical in there ( and I generally don't care for the GF). They have a full band playing sets on the landing and a pianist in between in the lobby. Very Christmassy. Very nice.

thanks for the advice it does sound like a wonderful time.

We have been before xmas donkeys ago and i remember the parks not being that busy and as for the weather it is hit and miss, unfortunately we will miss the Mickeys xmas party as i think it ends on the 20th, but i am looking forward to seeing the osborne lights and visiting some of the resorts, its just the bus journeys u got to do to get to some of them lol and we will get there early and try to do as much as we can when it opens as i really only want to go and do the new seven dwarfs coaster and belle's house, anything else will be a bonus.

When do the xmas menus come out for the peabody does anyone know.

As for the busy roads i think hubby will just take alternate roads to various places if he has to lol, but one thing least were not at home this year for xmas :dance3::dance3:

The parade and fireworks during Christmas week are the same as you get at the party anyway so you're getting almost the same for free TBH!
