I want to get one of those game boxes like an XBOX or GameCube for my son for XMas. Which is better for that age and will continue to be good as he grows up?

My 24-year old adores his X-BOX.

That would be my husband, not my kid!

We bought an XBox and we love it. I like to play it after the kids go to bed (I am usually up pretty late due to this). The whole reason I bought it was my Halo addiction.

We have 5 DCherubs from 7 to almost16 and looked into this same thing for last Christmas. We decided on a GameCube because it seemed like the selection of games for all age ranges was better. I also liked that there were more less violent games for GameCube. That is not to say that the violent ones are not out there, this just worked better for us.

I'd go with xbox. There are more games to play and you can play DVD's on it. Gamecubes are only good for gamcube games.

For just a 10 year old I say Gamecube based on the types of games. Now, since you apparently want this for long term, I say XBOX and there will be more games that appeal to him as he gets older.

We have both, I play the XBOX more than my 9 year old son. He plays the Gamecube more.

I am looking into this myself but was wondering about X-box vs. PlayStation 2??

Anyone have thoughts???

Thanks

XBOX. But.. I'm biased :smooth:

We won an x box for free a few years ago, we also have a gamecube (which they don't really play)

My soon to be 10 year old likes the Xbox better.

He has tons of sport games, like Amped, Tony Hawk, and some other ones. He also likes Starwars games.

My 9 year old likes the Gamecube ok, but its sort of limited to what he likes. He says some Gamecube games are "baby" games.

Mind you, we don't have M games here. We do allow some T rated games depending on the game. For example, the Star Wars game is T, but its the sci fi animated violence that doesnt bother me.

Yes, the Xbox game can become a DVd player if you buy a special remote.

The games are pretty much the same for xbox vs playstation 2. Our xbox seems a little sturdier than our PS2. We had to have our PS2 repaired within the first year we had it. Still have problems with occasionally. What I do like about the PS2 is that to watch DVD's you simply use the controller where on xbox you have to buy an adaptor with a remote to watch the DVD's @ a cost of $30.
PS 2 uses external memory cards to save games and xbox has an internal memory.

We have a Gamecube for DH...Yes, Husband. :p He has been wanting a Playstation, but I manage to talk him into the Nintendo systems because I enjoy playing the mario games and we both enjoy mario kart, golf and party. DH really only plays sports games so for him I don't think it matters too much. I know my 8 year old nephew has a playstation 2 and loves it, but whenever he comes over here he still wants to play mario. :) We have two DVD players so that was never a big selling point for us.

My soon to be 10 yr old, says XBOX, hands down. He has gamecube and of course, must now have the XBox. He has me selling some of his stuff on ebay to buy it lol.

Hey we resemble that remark!

Seriously we have all three. I would not buy GC for a 10yo boy.

As far as XBOX vs PS2...well they are about the same in my house but then again it is 3 girls that play, 7yodd, 13yodd, & me included.

I play Gamecube more...what can I say I am a nintendo kind of gal. Currently we (7yo & me) are playing Pikmin 2, pretty good. 13yo isn't interested in GC.

Here's what we found out about the systems.

PSA2 -- very unreliable, breaks easy, awkward controllers. Huge selection of games. (Many are sports related and some are the really violent games.) We don't own this system due to all the technical issues the systems have.

X-Box -- best graphics. can use as DVD with accessory add-on. Decent selection of games. I like this system the best. Cons: The control for this thing is huge and very awkward to use. Had to buy the girlie mini-micro controller for this. If you get this system for a child, you might want to consider the smaller controller (made by Mad-Catz I think.) We own an X-Box. Bought a referbished unit.

Game Cube -- most family friendly system. I grew up with Nintendo, so this was our first of the two to buy. Kids will relate to the Mario, Donkey Kong type characters. We also have some "party" games for this system that are fun for a group -- regardless of age. This is the workhorse system. It was designed for kids and can really take a beating. This system is also the least expensive. It also allows Gameboy games to be linked up and played on your large TV and you can share game elements between the two systems. (These components are add-ons and cost extra.)

Don't plan on any of these systems being around for a long time! The next generation of systems are nearing completion in development. Buy what is age-appropriate for your son, with the understanding he will want another game system in the next few years.

OK...just polled the 4 boys in my house...

boy #1 10yr.....XBOX
boy #2 10yr....XBOX
boy #3 12yr.....Game Cube
boy #4 12yr....Game Cube...

From my results can't go wrong....but must mention none of the boys above have XBOX but have everything else. Playstation 2, GameCube, Ninitendo...

So it sound like most people think we should get an XBOX. My next questions are:

1. What items do we need to purchase with the XBOX such as controllers?

2. Where is the best place to buy an XBOX?

3. What two games should I buy him?

4. This space reserved for another question which I'll certainly have later!!!

Our X box came with one game, and one controller. We bought another controller at Christmas. We bought a Microsoft X Box controller, instead of a cheaper knock off one. I personally don't see the controllers as big.

Best place, don't know. We got ours for FREE! (My daughter won a contest right before Christmas). I did see the price went down on them at Circuit City. I personally like Circuit City best, since in my town, they have the best customer service, and you don't get a hassle to return things like at Best Buy. I would check online prices as well. Remember the Black Friday sales could possibly have Xboxes on sale.

Games, well, what does he like? Best Buy usually has a very good selection of games that are $19.99 or less. My DS (almost 10) loves the Star Wars games. I'm going to buy him Star Wars Battlefront for his birthday. He also really likes Tony Hawk, Spiderman, and his Two Star Wars games. We just borrowed Crazy Taxi 3 and he likes that as well. There are some cool sports games out there as well.
