One of my sons received a 12 month Gold membership to Xbox Live for Christmas. Upon setting it up today, we noticed that only one player can play against other Xbox Live users. I went to the Xbox website and noticed that you can upgrade to a Family Subscription, which would allow up to 4 profiles. Does this mean that my sons and my husband could play as a team against other Xbox Live users if we had the Family Membership? Thanks so mcuh!

I believe so! We have the Family plan since we have 2 xbox's but even with one you can use more than one screen name on one Xbox at the same time. HTH

You can have a guest, but I believe their data isn't saved. They can play online with you though.

But with the family plan the data will be saved. They will not be a guest they will be part of the plan. We have the 4 names and all of ours are saved.

Do you need the data to be saved though? Are your husband and son going to play to go often enough that it would really be worth it? DH and his friends play online against each other and when he has had a friend over, we've had no problems with his friend just being a guest.

I might be cheap, but I'd just save the money and have one play as a guest.

Yes, but they can still play as a team with or without the family membership. The advantage is the saved progress. If dad will only play occasionally, is it worth it?

My son says only certain games allow guests. Also, if the friends have Xbox Live contracts at home, they can use their gamer tags with email and password and play at your house. The only reason you'd need extra/family memberships would be if there were multiple players living at your house and always playing on your Xbox.

Well we only paid $100 for the family plan for 1 year. So I have a name my DD has a name and H has 2. So for $100 I think it is worth it.

The OP hasn't said how her hubby would use it. I have three boys, family would be great for us (when their current live runs out). If it were just one son and dad, family would not be worth it. I rarely play, he rarely plays. I am just pointing out that OP needs to look at how they will use it. It is a great deal, no doubt about that, but if the dad will only play for an hour maybe three times a year, would that really be worth the additional $40 just for the ability for him to save his progress?

We share one membership in this family. DH and teen DS play- not together- but the same game. DS says DH is ruining his ranking with his poor playing:rotfl2: I have to look into this "family" plan of the gold membership. Is it double the cost? I'll go look it up.

ok this is the "extra" stuff you get in family as per their website

Four Xbox LIVE Gold® memberships for less than the price of two
Manage your family’s memberships and settings in the Family Center
View reports about our family’s Xbox LIVE activities
Gift Microsoft Points Allowances to your family
Exclusive discounts on family-friendly games

We upgraded our new Xbox Live membership to the Family Membership. Xbox gave us credit for the Gold Membership so we had to pay about $50 out of pocket. My sons are triplets and my husband likes to play Xbox with them, so the Family Plan seemed like to best route to go. We haven't figured out how all 4 of them can play together against other Xbox Live users. We only can get two of them to be able to play on the same team against others.

Thanks everyone for your help!
