Seems like OP has it under control, but for others, it seriously depends on the airline policies if this is practical. Do the math, then decide.
For our (my) upcoming trip, it's going to cost me to cancel DH's plane tickets, or to reschedule for both of us. The change fee is more that the cost of the tickets I purchased, so even after they apply the fare to the fee, I still owe a few dollars. So it's actually cheaper to not do anything.
Which is why our trip has turned into a solo trip, with his encouragement. I didn't want to go if we both couldn't, but he said 'that was silly - go and have a good time'.
And before anybody asks, no, in this particular situation, the travel insurance will not cover the cost. I checked. YMMV
