WWYD: Ebay Item Listed As NWT Reeks of Cigarette Smoke *UPDATE 8/24*

In the refund I just processed last week (but this was within the timeframe-maybe 30 days?) I clicked on the refund button. I had a zero Paypal balance so had to have some bank funds transferred over in the exact amount of the refund I needed to give. I can't remember the exact refund given but say it was $35 and I was surprised that after the refund was sent, I had a Paypal balance of $1-something and the amount added to my account was labeled "Fee Reversal from Paypal". Not sure if things were done differently before but this is what happened to me last week.

Direct from the Paypal site: When you issue a full refund, your original transaction fee is credited back to you minus a thirty cent processing fee. When issuing partial refunds, a portion of the fee is returned to you.

When I sent the refund I don't remember the exact amount but it made my account negative .60 cents or something around that figure. So not sure why it states that there is only a .30 cent processing fee. Maybe they've updated to just charge you that now and they don't add in the 2.9% as well.

Thanks for clarifying. So I guess they did take 30 cents from me then! I didn't compare the Paypal fee refunded to the PP fee from the original transaction! I think it is weird that they allowed your account to go negative. When I tried to do the refund without having enough funds in my account they told me I could not do the refund.

I know that the seller in this instance admitted to being a smoker, but I just wanted to bring up a point for those of you who are uber sensitive to smoke...mail carriers smoke in their delivery trucks ALL THE TIME. Whether you buy from a private seller who has verified that they are a smoke free home, or the JC Penney catalog, you run the risk of your merchandise arriving at your home smelling like cigarette smoke if you are utilizing any sort of mail delivery service.

That said, I do think that if you are that sensitive to cigarette smoke and/or pet hair/dander, you should be asking about these specifics each and every time you purchase from a private seller in order to lessen your chances of running into this issue again. Sellers can't possibly be expected to put disclaimers about everything that might affect everyone on their listings (i.e. do I need to start disclosing that we are a pro-peanut home, just in case someone who is so allergic to peanuts that a trace of dust inhaled can kill them happens to buy one of my items?)

As someone who sells somewhat frequently on eBay (among other places), I am very careful to state that my items come from a "smoke free, pet friendly home (but the animals do not wear the items)." I also go over each item meticulously for any stray hairs that might have hitchhiked accidentally RIGHT before packing it up in a well-sealed mailer, and have NEVER had one person tell me that they received something that smelled or had hair on it.
