I’ve been at my job for almost 3 years.
In the last yesr we have gone through changes: bought by another company and a new GM and I also have a new manager ((new GM and my manager worked together and are family friends)
Anyhow: When my new manager came on we were talking and she asked me to give her a chance and stay with her to help improve things.
About a month ago she was saying the GM was wanting to get in the budget for next year to make me an assistant.
2 weeks later my Manager says to me she wants to talk to me before she leaves it’s good news and the the GM is there agreeing. Manager is like we want to give you more responsibility since i have many years of previous experience as a supervisor and the GM will get the ball rolling to make me an assistant.
So I have stepped up more and I haven’t seen any new listings on the company website and I talked to my manager the other day saying any word. She said well the GM is on vacation but she is trying.
I am feeling just disheartened. And honestly I don’t know why they would come to me and not have it all worked out. I go in tomorrow on my day off to help some things and I don’t know how long I should keep doing extra and not getting the money.
And as I write these are new people so only worked with them since February and March.
Any advice? Thanks

Deleted since you are being paid for the time, so not as taken advantage of as I thought.

They first mentioned it a month ago, then 2 weeks ago talked about it again. So that was only 2 weeks ago & the GM was on vacation after that. Plus the position is to go in the budget for next year. Did I get that all right?

I don’t know what kind of company this is. But I know at the large corporation where I worked, getting positions approved often took months. Same at the company where my DH was a manager.

I would be patient & give it a couple of months. When next year’s budget comes out, see if the position is available then. In the meantime, keep doing your job & being a team player.

Edit: I don’t know that I would come in extra time with no pay tho. If you’re an hourly employee, you should probably talk to your manger about getting paid for extra time.

Look for a new job.

It’s my regular day off . but I’m getting paid extra hours. I’m sorry if I was unclear about that part.

If you’re getting paid to do the extra work, I would continue. Not only does it look like you’re helping them out(you are), if possible bank roll the extra cash -it will be good to have if we slip into a recession.

Okay, that's different. From the original post, it seemed like you weren't getting paid for your day off work. If you are, then I'd give them a little more time. But I wouldn't keep volunteering b/c time off is important.

Regarding the bolded... because they see it as good news, thought you would, and wanted to share with you.

At the very least, I would not expect any extra money until the next fiscal year starts (and find out if the fiscal year starts in July, October, or January).

Worst case, the money gets cut from the budget and you keep doing your job (with the extra responsibilities) without a pay increase. Then you get to decide... do you want to look for another job?

Nobody here knows enough of the details to be able to give you an answer.

Same thing I was thinking. 3 yrs isn't really that long to be on the job and the fact your company was bought by another company can certainly impact HR issues. For example, will any jobs/departments be merged and/or have a work force reduction? Usually one company buys another to increase profits, expand their business or thinks they somehow gain by the acquiring another company. Also sounds like you have worked for these two individuals for only a few months. Not clear if you supervise others and/or what level job you have. Typically, if you get more responsibility that also means a pay increase. But the size of the company probably determines exactly how they handle HR issues. Larger companies have well-defined processes in order to be fair to everyone. Promotions aren't just given out because your current boss happens to 'like' you.

You could also talk to someone in HR to get a better grasp of how things are being handled. They would also likely have information on your prior appraisals and can give you an objective view of your potential within the combined companies.

From what I see where I am, it sometimes takes a while to get these types of positions approved by higher ups, especially if it’s a new position. I would just give it some time, and keep doing what you’re doing. But that’s me.

OP here with an update:
I am leaving my job, because yep got jerked around and lied to.
So I kept doing extra things just waiting and one day I pulled my boss to side and said what is going on.
She said oh I found out just yesterday that we are going a different way, but stay here and we figure this new way a person would go.
Well I said well I won’t be doing extra things anymore and if there is a next time you need to show money before you come to me.
I bided my time and another department was short so I started helping and learning things, my boss had no idea and happen to stay late and I was needed to be in other department and she was like I just wanted to check on you, um I’ve been helping for months in this other department but ok.
Recently we got our evaluation and I exceeded expectations and was lied to about how I’d be getting such and such percent based on it Um nope that’s not how this works I may have exceeded but everyone gets a flat percentage.
Then we were talking about how earlier in year they came to me etc and she gave me another reason why they decided not to or couldn’t.
And yesterday another supervisor who has helped me with the other department was saying the big boss is like we are trying to get mylilnikita moved out blah blah blah.
I applied someplace else and was prepared to show them my evaluation from my manager, I got it without having to use it.
So I am leaving for better pay and opportunity still sad because I’ll miss most people there but I have to do what I need to.

Do they know yet; have you given notice? I’m curious about their response. Good luck with the new job :)

I haven’t said yet, but I’m sure they will looked surprised and say keep holding on blah blah blah .

You absolutely have to take care of yourself first. My DD resigned from her job last week & is starting with another company Monday. Businesses have to realize people just aren’t willing to put up with what past generations did. DD was a department manager, but her department had more work than they could keep up with. The team they supported didn’t routinely complete their paperwork, making extra work for DD & her employees. There were other issues, but after almost 3 years she could see things were going nowhere. She found her ideal position which is non management analyst job with better benefits & higher pay.

Good luck at the new job OP! Good way to start off the new year!
