The snow is so bad here in PA that they closed the interstate highways. The local news said that 78, 80, and 81 are closed!

To my fellow PA'ers, can anyone remember that ever happening before?

This storm is crazy - the worst in years for us here in the Lehigh Valley area.

Wasn't it just last year that people were stuck for many hours on 78 and it was closed....I seem to recall 12-18 hours??

Vine st expy in philly is also closed.

I remember the interstates being closed in Feb 1983. I was 9 month pregnant and snowed in. My neighbor kept calling me to make sure I wasn't in labor. When the snow finally stopped, everyone in my neighboorhood came over with their snowblowers to clear out our driveway. I was also stuck March 1993 at the Ramada Inn in Allentown for a hockey tournament and the interstates were closed then.

...you remind ome of my MiL - we don't like to take HER on vaca either, because, everywhere she goes, inevietably there's a deluge! :rotfl:

I heard from a neighbor that I-83 was closed an hour or so ago and the road going north on the MD side is backed up all the way down to the beltway b/c there are very few places to get off. They announced before lunch that plows had been ordered off the road. Then, just recently, I heard that if you slid off the road or broke down there'd be nobody to come rescue you.

We had 31" from Saturday's snow and have already got another 17" out there with blizzard/white-out conditions plus more still coming down. Enough already...:scared:

It was 2/13-14/2007 that people were stuck & stranded on I78 in Berks County for almost 2 days. Someone just called into the local news, they have been stuck in that same spot - 2 miles from the Kutztown exit - on I78 since noon. Lather, rinse REPEAT!

I don't know about Pennsylvania roads, but I did hear on the news this morning that most of the mid-Atlantic states were running out of road salt mix. They may be having to close because they can't adequately treat the road surface right now.

It made the news that a container ship loaded with the stuff made port in Baltimore today. There are apparently 6 more shiploads on the way.

They are putting snow on the on ramps to keep people off but keeping the off ramps open so people can get off. I think there was a pile up in Cumberland Co.

Wow - so it sounds like there were some closures when I was younger and didn't really follow it. But I DO remember people being stuck on 78 not that long ago due to closure from the terrible accident. I couldn't remember any pre-emptive closures.

In '83, I was just a little kid, so I didn't know about that one. And in '93 I was in high school in Quakertown - and my parents are outside of town in the country, so it didn't matter if anything was open or not - we weren't getting out or going anywhere!

This is truly one for the record books. And it's STILL snowing full out!

WOW!!!

I guess the 4-5 inches (if that) we got here in Missouri the last couple of days isn't so bad. I'll quit complaining now!

Be safe, people! Stay home if you can!

How do those of you who HAVE to work (doctors, nurses, fire, police, etc.) get there?

I was just by I-81(just a few miles into PA from MD)a few hours ago, and it seemed like traffic was moving surprisingly well. I guess things have changed since then.

I run a taxi cab service in Monroe Cty. I wish Rendell would call for a state of emergency already so we all could go home.

How do we get to work?

In Pittsburgh, we walk in. I've walked the 3 miles back-and-forth each day this week. Luckily, I'm off tomorrow, so I can rest up.

I'm considered "necessary personnel", so I don't have a choice.

Not from Pa, but about 5-6 years ago we took our DD and her friend to Splash Lagoon for her December birthday and had to stay an extra night because the interstate closed down... Funny cause DD is suppose to spend the night at Gannon University this Sunday and I am getting a DeJaVu feeling in my gut. So what is your weather suppose to be for the weekend?

That's exactly what I was just thinking!

Some go in before the storm starts or when it's still okay enough to get there and will stay until they can leave. Some will be picked up by people who have 4 wheel drive.

Here in MD they are sending the National Guard and/or snowplows with emergency vehicles.

Our governor is getting a tad irratated with people now. First there are the idiots who have no good reason for being out who either have accidents or get stuck and need to be rescued. :sad2: Then there are the people who are whining about the fact that they aren't plowing down to pavement, not that their street hasn't been done at all, just that they can't see the pavement. :sad2:
