I agree, we usually watch the newspaper flyers every week and go to walmart, or another such store when there are sales and pick up supplies little by little. By the time the kids are in school for a few years, you pretty much have an idea of what you can buy in advance. There is always stuff that certain teachers want them to have, but it doesn't seem like such a big expense when you can pick up stuff all summer.
Great deal.....a few weeks ago we got double packs of glue sticks for 5/$1. that was 10 of them that always seem to disappear. I also got the notebooks for 10 cents each at Target and folders for 7 cents each. That way they get new ones every marking period and if they get ripped, etc. no big deal.
Calculators........when my ds was in 6th grade, he had to have a certain type of calculator, I forget which which was not too expensive.....only about $15. It was supposed to last for 2 years. Yeah right . I bought the first one and told him if he lost it, he was to but the next one. I wanted to use it for his sister who is 2 yrs younger than him....I thought fat chance !!. well, he did lose it after the first year, so he had to buy the next one. he was more careful with that one. DD used it for 6th grade and lost it . She then had to buy the next one. she will be in 7th grade this year and will use it for 7th and 8th, cause she is not in the advanced class like her brother.
For 8th grade ds needed a TI-83 for roughly $90, and the same deal....you lose it you pay for the replacement. It is in great condition !!. He will use it this year for his freshman year, and then next year the calculators are $160. SAme deal....he knows that if he loses it he has to replace it and has been very careful with it.

DD's PreK teacher reversed her position on school supplies from last year to this. Last year she had a list, this year she asked for $5/child to buy 'group supplies', all shared amongst the kids.

All DD needed (new) was a paper folder and a box of tissues. The backpack we already had. And, in case of an accident, a full set of clothes in a ziploc bag.

DS, entering HS, hasn't been given a list. The only thing I KNOW he needs is some TI calculator that costs OVER $100. I wonder if his TI calculator from 7/8th grade would have helped any of you?

We might have to take out a small loan for my 4 boys and all the back to school supplies and clothes!! :teeth:

Luckily, we hit a good sale at Target, so that helped alot.
And my mom took each boy out and bought some school clothes for them, to help out.
