Pepper. DUH!

After i make our standard turkey leftover entrees…I might have 1/2 tsp left. (Luckily, I will be near my preferred spice store on Monday.)

LOL. I've used bourbon in place of vanilla when I've planned poorly.

I'm completely out of cinnamon - a spice I'm NEVER without. But I did discover that I somehow have 3 containers of pumpkin pie spice. And I don't usually use mixed spices like that -- I prefer to use the individual spices. I've no idea why I have so many!

thank you for the reminder-i just went and checked my large containers and I need to replace a couple. btw-amazon has some good sales on them right now.

Ironically, my go-to spice place, Penzeys has free pepper right now, but darn it all, I just can’t get there today or tomorrow. I’m close to needing vanilla (I always keep a spare, since we never have rum in the house.)

I’m not judging you rum lovers…I’m more of a brandy girl, says the kid from Wisconsin.

Pretty easy to make vanilla at home. Vanilla beans and your alcohol of choice (I use vodka).

Split at least 5 vanilla beans, put in a 750ml bottle of alcohol, and stick it in a cupboard for a while. Shake it maybe once every week or two for 2-3 months. When it smells like vanilla, or changes color if you're using a clear alcohol, you can use it. Just leave the beans in it... you can add in fresh alcohol as you use some to keep it going, or just start a new bottle when you get low.

Have tried to make vanilla extract and the good quality vanilla beans + the alcohol cost as much or more than buying it already made. Was fun to give it a try but not worth it in my view.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law lived in Haiti for over 30 years. Our Christmas treat every year was THIS vanilla. It's amazing -- and you only use 1/2 the amount of vanilla the recipe calls for. Eight ounces on Amazon is less than $10.
