Would you watch a tv series about Romeo and Juliet if they had lived?

They're plays, so they're not really meant to be read, anyway. Definitely not the best way to experience them.

Reading it, especially on your own, is a drag and you miss a lot. I took a Shakespeare class in high school where we read and discussed them together in class and usually watched a movie version after. My teacher loved pointing out all the dirty jokes. A lot of teachers (and people in general) take it too seriously, they forget it was entertainment for the masses not high literature.

Much is in the presentation: My students complained about Shakespeare on the first day of the unit, but by the end many were saying, "Aww, we're done? Couldn't we read another of his plays?"

... they forget it was entertainment for the masses not high literature.

Most of Willie Shake's plays are written with two entertwined plotlines: a set of high-class characters /royals and a set of low-class characters.

Loved my Shakespeare in college. Sat in a giant century+ old auditorium and listened to a very engaging professor discuss the themes of each play. Loved it.

But no, what was interesting about Romeo and Juliet was them dying. Take that out and the story would likely be very ordinary. And people don't tend to watch or read ordinary.

Running for their lives as their parents and the church wants to hunt them down? I think that would be interesting compared to the nonsense on tv today.
