Would you want the government to create a fully funded BBC/RTE style radio service?

It is a non profit chartered by an act of Congress and most of its member stations are public. It receives both private and public funding. It is what we would call quasi public.

NPR was not chartered by Congress. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was. But it was their funding that allowed the establishment of PBS and NPR. However, they're not exclusive public broadcasting entities. There are several other organizations that receive CPB funding.

The BBC or RTE radio isn’t biased as far as I know. News isn’t really talked about on those stations except on certain stations at certain times of the day. And it wouldn’t be partisan if political topics were off limits.
I don't think it would work in the US in today's political climate, everything gets politicized here. I have a family member who plays in the RTE concert orchestra, so I know some of what they do.

The United States does fund a few broadcasters. Things like Voice of America and American Forces Network.

Hard pass. There is zero way that it doesn't become a propaganda outlet for whichever party is in power. You don't have to directly discuss politics to make a political statement. Art and entertainment are inherently political--look at the whole book banning thing going on now. The last thing we need is a taxpayer funded place for the party in power at any given time to push out propaganda in the name of art.

Nope. Basically, for the reasons that JLTraveling stated above. A waste of taxpayer money, and it would become political, whether that was the original intent or not.

I still don't understand WHY we would need this and where the money would come from. How about we start fully funding the various line items that we NEED (I can list them but would probably get points) before we start adding items?

I would ask on your America/Britain thread about how unbiased they think the BBC is.

Most definitely no. The new outlets the government already funds or partially funds are skewed one way. We don’t need another one added that doesn’t support the views of the other half of the country. Especially when we get no say where our tax dollars are used.

There's already plenty of material on Sirius XM and huge swaths of podcasts, so why would the government even need a channel? Especially when they already send the subliminal data directly into our microchipped brains. That's not me though, I think for myself. I love paying taxes, BTW. Simply adore paying taxes. Must pay more taxes.

I started at an NPR station. We were non-profit, funded by government grants and private donations. There programming to me is very much like BBC. And here in California, we also have Capitol Public Radio, which also is funded by government grants and private donations.
