Six Flags Programs Offer Tours, Preferred Services

(Sunday, July 9, The New York Times)

Six Flags theme parks is introducing some new VIP programs this summer. Parks in Gurnee, Ill., Springfield, Mass., and Arlington, Texas, recently began tours that offer guests expedited access to rides, preferred seating at shows and autograph sessions with Looney Tunes characters. Similar programs in all 29 of its theme parks are also being planned. The tours are $100 to $260 a person. Admission is included in some packages. The programs come at a time of lagging attendance at Six Flags. The number of visitors dropped by about 1.3 million through June 18, a 13 percent decline from a year earlier.

Actually, I wouldn't pay to go to Six Flags at all, much less anything like this. I haven't been to one of those parks since I was a teenager, and from the posts here about them, I don't think I've missed much.

No thanks. Six Flags isn't worth one penny extra for anything. ;)

I agree with the other posters, not worth the money.

The one in Gurnee IL isn't bad. I love riding roller coasters. Plus your ticket also lets you into their water park.

I went this spring with my kids and my 2 older ones started getting headaches, because we were actuallyl doing at least 4 rides an hour. Years ago, you were lucky if you did one ride every 2 hours. On some rides, we were able to jump off and get right back on.

One thing I noticed is security was everywhere-you never saw that before at Gurnee IL Six Flags Great America. I stopped to look at a park map that was posted, and security came right up to me and asked if they could help. (Looking for a bathroom-again).

They do get you on parking $15, plus I have to pay 2 tolls going into IL--"Welcome to IL-$1.50 please.

To bypass the lines like at IOA yes we probably would. Not for the shoes or a behind the scenes tour though.

Six Flags Over Texas is also offering "Brunch with Bugs" and nightly character parades. Can we say "ripping off Disney"? The Six Flags people I mentioned this too did not seem amused. :rotfl:

We call our local Six Flags (Darien Lake) "Not Disney" b/c they want to be Disney but they're not Disney and for so many reasons.

What the heck could they give you a tour of? "Oh, this is where we cook the fries, this is where the Viper is, this is the backstage of the concert area, here's the hat store ..." Give me a break!!! They don't have a single ride that is vaguely interesting in where you'd want to know how they did something.

I go to Six Flags once a year *only* b/c we get free passes from school. DS gets a pass and, as a teacher, I get a pass. Otherwise, I would never set foot in a Six Flags theme park ever again!!

I prefer going to the smaller amusement park (Fantasy Island) that doesn't try to be like Disney and doesn't pretend to be Disney.

:rotfl: TOO MANY TOLLS!!! I agree, but now I take 41 instead and get off at 132 (follow signs)... we haven't gone this year, but last year it was worth the water park. Not too many people when we were there, but the lines in the part itself were too long for us!!!

back to the orig post... I wouldn't pay anything extra... its not worth it.

Actually, the new guy in charge of Six Flags is a former ESPN executive,
and being a former "Disney family" member, he really is trying to imitate
many of the things Disney does.

I read a pretty interesting article on him a few weeks back, and he is very
much trying to rid Six Flags of the "teen scene" image. Character meals,
these tours, character meet and greets, as well as less discounts are all
things he's going to implement.

I say good for him, as a consumer I want to make sure Disney has some legit
competition out there that will keep them on their toes.

No way would I pay that at a Six Flags. I went to Six Flags Great Adventure several years ago. It was fun, but I haven't been back (and no real desire to).

DH and I love roller coasters and such, but each time we go to a local amusement park, we just don't have as much fun as we do in Disney.

Many parks are trying to be like Disney and it just isn't working.
