Long story short...DD's Ipod, a crystal rock, and a laptop computer mouse have all "gone missing" from DD's room.

They were not lost or misplaced...I know this because my mom has been living with us and she is a total clean freak. She cleans DD's room from top to bottom on a daily basis. Everything has its place and MUST be in its place, but that's a whole different issue.

There were 2 very young (6 and 9) kids in DD's room the day they disappeared (next door neighbors). I cannot approach the parents because they are CRAZY. I won't go into detail right now, but trust me...I am afraid of them. Having all of my tires slit (or worse) for a $100 Ipod just isn't worth it.

Do I bother filing a report? I have the serial # but does it really matter unless it shows up at a pawn shop or something? Or do I just call it a lesson learned and not allow these kids back in the house.

I'd probably chalk it up to experience and let it go, especially if you fear retribution. What exactly do you want the police to do? I think I would just make my house off-limits to those two kids. Or if you can't do that, then put a lock on all your bedroom doors and USE IT when the kids are in your home.

Since you are very afraid of the neighbors with consequences you have to let it go. Trying to recover stolen items from crazy people never turns out good let alone if they are your next door neighbors!

I would also NOT say anything to your dd to even HINT that you think it was them. Little kids will say stuff just to say stuff they hear from you and your dd may face retribution from them because of that.

What were they doing in your house anyway?? Make it the last time they were there!

I would file a police report. You have no idea who took the items. I understand that these kids were in her room, but you really have no proof. I would just file a stolen items report. There may be a pattern in your neighborhood of similar thefts, etc. Also if you have a second incidence at your house, you have proof of the first loss.

I would chalk it up as a lesson learned and never allow the kids back in your house. We have a couple of kids in our neighborhood whose parents are like that and I will not let the kids inside our house (and they ask my kids frequently to let them inside to play).

I wouldn't have allowed the children of crazy neighbors into my house in the first place...invariably something's going to happen and then you have "crazy" to deal with...I don't do well with crazy.

That being said, I just wouldn't have these kids in the house anymore. If it is a certainty that they will be in your house, then I'd put locks on the bedroom doors and lock them when the kids are over.

Is theft covered in your homeowners' insurance policy? If so, you might need to file a police report to file a claim.

OTOH, if you do file a police report, you would need to tell them exactly what happened, who was in your house, etc.

I'm not sure what I would do.

File a police report. File a claim with your homeowners insurance. Do NOT approach scary neighbors. Do NOT under any circumstances allow neighbor children in your home (much less a bedroom) in the future.

And why is your Mother cleaning your DD's bedroom? My kids bedrooms are a no-go zone for the adults...they are required to clean them themselves. I might bulldoze thru with a rake and a shovel (yes, really) a few times a year and gather things that shouldn't be in there once or twice a week (food dishes, my stuff that DD 'borrows'), but beyond that, no adult cleans their room...

You don't need to approach the neighbors, but I would no longer allow them in my home. Outdoors to play, but not inside.

It's not worth it to file with my homeowners insurance, my deductable is more than the Ipod.

I feel bad for DD though.

My mom cleans DD's room because she is a little crazy. DD still makes her bed, puts her toys away, puts her clothes where they go and isn't allowed to bring food in her room. But my mom feels the need to scrub floors, move furniture and wipe things down all the time...so whatever.

I would, then if something happened the next time, it would be documented. I would also not allow them back into my home if I knew for sure it was them. They could be trained to steal. I am related to a family that steals for a living please don't get me started on all the things they do.

You could file a report, but there is nothing that the police can DO. They can go over there, of course, and ask the mom if the kids took the iPod and other items, but what do you think she is going to say? They CAN NOT search the house.

If you think she might damage your property, and it isn't worth it to you, I'd say leave it alone.
