Would you book Poly in 2014?

Recent info from Tikiman suggests that the volcano pool will close in January for an unconfirmed amount of time (could be anywhere from weeks to months) and that, at some point in the near future, the GCH will be gutted and redone (and the water feature removed:().

The DVC conversion is however, reported to be less extensive than intially projected with only the Tahiti longhouse being converted to DVC plus building a lesser number of lakeside bungalows than initially projected. A Trader Sam's is also supposed to be added somewhere on the resort property.

Of the above, the only aspects that would be deal breakers for me are the Volcano Pool and/or the GCH being out of comission, particularly if either of the restaurants are closed (the GCH makeover is supposed to happen in stages and not all at once).

While I have no doubt that Tikiman's info is legit, I'm wondering if it warrants second guessing a Poly reservation for 2014. My reasons for thinking this are two-fold: (1) Disney often changes its mind; and (2) even if they don't change their mind, they often end up moving slower than their initial projections.

With respect to the second point, I note that one can make 'Ohana and Kona reservations into late January of 2014 and there have been no rumors of either of these restaurants closing in the near future (in contrast, there were a lot of rumors swirling about Cali Grill closing way over a year before the closure actually happened).

I would also think that they would want all of their flagship Monorail resorts running at full capacity when the new Fantasyland is completed sometime early next year.

Moreover, I wouldn't think Disney would be in too much of a hurry to push out a Poly DVC when they haven't yet finished the GF one.

In view of all this, I'm guessing that an extended refurb of the Volcano Pool and/or closure of either of the two TS restaurants in the GCH, won't happen until fall of 2014 at the earliest (and may get pushed back to early 2015).

In any event, even if a deal-breaker refurb were to occur in 2014, one could always switch to a different resort.

Planning a split stay, and will most likely book for Jan of 2014. Even thought I wanted to experience the volcano pool, there is another one so it really isn't a huge deal breaker. If the garden tower rooms become available at CR I may stay there instead, but as of now we're going to stay at the Poly for 3 nights.

I guess it depends on whether the construction would bother you or not. If it were me at those prices I would definitely stay somewhere else!

Our most recent Poly stay was in January of this year, and we wanted to book CL. Unfortunately, with the rehab, the Hawaii building was closed. But our request for Samoa w/ balcony was granted. The refurb work right next door in Hawaii didn't bother us, nor did the construction across the way for the GF DVC.

We booked Poly for the PHM weekend in 2014, and we'll likely stick with it IF Disney releases discounts that make the price for CL rooms tolerable. Right now, rack rate for a CL GV room is $900/night. That's not tolerable. If, however, a 40% discount becomes available for Poly CL, we'd stick with Poly through a volcano pool closure, GCH renovations or DVC construction. CL would mean we spend less time in the GCH, keeps us away from the construction, and honestly, the quiet pool will be just fine for our short stay. But if no discount becomes available or the discount is insufficient, we'd switch to an Epcot area resort or reconsider GF.

I would book it for a day

I would book in the month of May

I would book it any year

Especially I would go next year

I would book it for a night

I would book it if I could get a flight

I would book it anytime

What'cha waiting for? It's time!

If it were me, I'd book and see what happens as far as the pool closure and GCH refurb/closure. Construction wouldn't bother me, but the volcano pool is our favorite pool on property, so if that was closed, that would be a deal breaker for us (as would closure of the GCH). With that said, I would book what I wanted with a second resort in mind and if things progressed with the above closures, I would switch at that time.

For the amount of money Poly is asking for, and trust me I love the Poly, but I would stay somewhere else. The other pool is not that large so that means everyone will be sharing it. I would stay at CR or rent DVC points and stay in a 1 bedroom suite with kitchen at BLT for probably the same amount as the Poly.

The Poly isnt a huge resort and I would think you couldnt "hide" from that much construction as you can with some of the larger resorts.

Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

We have stayed at Poly, GF multiple times, Contemporary for the first time next week. Our family enjoys pool time every afternoon. The Poly pool areas are atrocious. Very little deck space, the pools are only 4.5 feet deep and very crowded. The pools at Contemporary and especially GF are superior.

This is the situation we're in now. We're ready to book for March 2014 and trying to decide what to do. Planned on this being our 5th trip at the Poly, having a hard time even imagining staying elsewhere. The info seems to be changing almost every day. We can handle SOME construction, we love the Poly enough to deal with it. In 2011, the quiet pool was closed, in 2012, the slide was closed until our last day. But major GCH work, Only the quiet pool(we love it, but we love how quiet it is! Not likely if it's the only pool) and construction zones on the east end near our beloved Tokelau....that will all probably be too much, especially for the price. I wish Disney would announce something, but I know that's a way off

At this point, we'll likely book the Poly, with the thought that we might have to change it. Plans change so often at Disney, until it's happening, who knows? But we need to figure out a backup. CR Garden View would be an option, but it's all booked. I can't imagine not having the monorail, but maybe we need to look at Epcot area? We're getting together with our travel group tomorrow, so much discussion to be had. One option I did price out- sharing a 2 BR villa at Bay Lake with my sister and BIL. Lots of space, would be great to have a washer and dryer...and not even $100 more than the total coast for all of us at Poly. Plan to discuss that as a backup with them tomorrow. My fear is Disney won't announce anything until very close to our trip and then there won't be a lot to choose from!

We did the exact thing, 2 bdrm BLT, can't even begin to tell you how amazing it is..... We were poly die hards too until BLT. You won't regret it! Great food options too!

Thank you! That's very reassuring! We actually plan to make an ADR for California Grill and maybe Chef Mickeys, and want to eat again at Contempo Cafe so it would definitely make all that convenient! I love the idea of walking to/from the MK and switching monorails at the TTC doesn't seem too bad. I'm mostly worried about missing the Poly atmosphere. Just so tropical and relaxing, that's what we love about it!

I looked at prices for Poly just out of pure curiosity and they were unreal. I love the resort, but not that much. I guess we all have our line in the sand and mine is apparently $500 a night for a standard room, lol.:lmao: I almost had an aneurysm when I priced the room we stayed in 4 years ago( club level lagoon view).

Granted, this was for peak times but still. I can afford it. But, it's the principle of the thing. WL and some of the other deluxes still aren't too bad and there are other resorts I still haven't tried. I definitely wouldn't pay those prices if the pool is down or the monorails aren't running at 100%.

As much as I love Poly, I wouldn't want to stay there if there's a great deal of construction going on. If I did book, I'd be keeping a very close eye on the boards and social media for updates with a back-up plan in mind.:goodvibes

While it is true that the entire resort will share the smaller pool, WDW usually will allow you to use a pool at a nearby resort as well, which would mean GF or CR. We've stayed at BCV before with SAB was closed and we were told that we could also use the BW pool if necessary.

No I would not. I was on the fence about going in 2013 with the rumors of construction and room rehabs but decided to go and was willing to change if the resort seemed to be under construction. Having fence walls with construction behind them is not so magical at the resort where you want to relax and take it easy. Love to check it out though once it is all done.
