Southwest currently has great prices for September, but our trip will be from September 28th to October 8th.

Since I can get 1 way for $67/each right now, would you book it and book the return separately once the October rates come out??

Is this even possible and are there any problems I could encounter doing this.
I'd be booking by tomorrow as the $67 fares are disappearing quickly.

Sure! You don't even have to book SW on the way back - unless you want to. I just booked a trip to Orlando and booked SW one way and used some coupons we had and then United the way back (because we had credits on United). If you are DEFINITELY going, book the flight out! For most airlines and definitely for SW, the round trip tickets are just two one-way tickets added together - so no worries.

If your dates are firm, book it! You won't see many fares that low these days.

I only book one way flights on SW. If the price goes down on one leg of the trip I can easily rebook at the lower fare and get the credit for the difference. If you book round trip and only one leg goes down you may not be able to rebook because the other leg is higher or sold out or something.

Book your cheap option now then book the second leg when it is released later. It will cause absolutely no problems for you but will give you savings!

I never book r/t , always one way so I can change ticket if the prices get lower, it's easier.

That is a great rate - I'd book it now.

Agree with the others - you don't even have to use the same airline.

Thanks everyone, just booked this morning. Now here's to hoping for a great price on the return also.

That's great. We only book one ways. Sometimes the same airlines and sometimes different ones. Back in the "olden" days it was cheaper to book rt, but not anymore. If you book 2 different airlines, but stay informed of each of their luggage rules. We are pretty much Jetblue flyers now, but use to mix and match with Airtran, SW, and United.

I've never done it this way until this year. SW had the $67 rate going down to MCO, but the rates coming home were much higher on all of the airlines I've checked. And, I want Jet Blue on the way home anyways, as DCL doesn't have the baggage thing with SW. So, still waiting for those to go lower!

We are in the same boat- I booked a OW for Sept 29 and will have to wait for our return flight. I have done this many times.
