Would normally put this in the sticky, but... (Roam Mobility Cda Day Special)

If you've read my posts in the sticky about the best ways to use our phone while down south, you'll know that I'm a big proponent of the T-Mobile/Google Voice combo to allow for unlimited US/Cda calling/text/data at the lowest price, but Roam Mobility has announced a Canada Day special where if you purchase one of their SIM cards and activate it on July 1, they will give you up to a 7 day talk/text/data (not unlimited) package for free.

What that means is that if you spend $19.95 on their sim, you can choose a 7 day package for free (normally $27.95).

If you're techno competent, use alot of data, or going for longer than 7 days, T-Mo is still the better way to go, but if you are looking for the easy option, this is actually a decent special.

Thanks for the tip, Maddysdaddy! I'm going to give this a try for our September trip to Disney World. :yay:

Question: have you used Roam Mobility before? How is their connection speed in Orlando?

I've never used Roam before, but they run on T-Mobile's network (and I do use T-Mobile).

When we were down in March, call quality was fine and didn't have any problems connecting and keeping calls. Data in and around the parks was slow, but became much better when we were in Orlando proper.

Where do you buy this Roam card? And, just so I think I have it, you buy this card, and then use it is your OWN cellphone? And when you buy it, getting the free week, you can use that free week whenever you want. Meaning, if I buy that card on Canada Day....then I can use my free week in Dec when I go to FL?

Just trying to figure out details. It is definitely a great plan tho!!

You can purchase the sim card online, or they have a number of retail providers that they list on their website (London Drugs was one here in Calgary).

You need to have your phone unlocked and then you can swap sim cards with the one from Roam. Alternatively, if your phone is locked, I think Roam does sell their own phones (about $50???).

If I understand the offer correctly, you purchase the sim card now, you HAVE to activate it on July 1, and then any time over the next 12 months, you use it.

All of the details are on their website.

Ah, too bad it's a max seven day plan, we need 14 days. I did go to the website and yes, you can buy July 1 and activate at a later date. But thanks for the info about using the T mobile network, I was trying to figure out if it was decent.

I think I will use Roam's "child" co, Ready Sim. It's only $35 for 14 days of talk/text/data and it includes the sim card. I can't find anything to beat that. (Even if I activate two separate weeks of the "Canada Day" special, it'd end up costing me $40.) I don't even remember if Ready Sim has international calling; I'm not worried about calling home, we have a Skype number and the villa has unlimited North America calling.

I am curious though, if anyone has used a sim card with data? Apparently there's a setting that needs to be adjusted with data that can be finicky; I'd feel better knowing from someone who's done it that it's NBD.

Ordered my Roam phone from futureshop.ca. It arrived today and I will activate it on Canada day.

I am happy to have found an inexpensive way to stay in touch while in the states

Just activated my Roam sim card and got 7 days free - yeah!

Thanks for posting this promo Maddysdaddy

My pleasure. Happy to see that a few people have taken advantage of this - it's a good deal for those without the time or technical savvy to go with T-Mobile directly.

I used the roam data in February when we were down. I didn't have to change anything but my SIM card. I don't know if my settings just happened to be right or what but it was super easy. I will be using it again in October, and I think we will get one for DH too so we can text when we split up.
