Hi. I just got an email that is really bothering me so I figured my fellow Disers are always willing to share their opinions and maybe help me see things in a different light.

My dd is graduating from elementary school in June. I recieved an email that a flier will be going home(some kids got it already) selling raffle tix to 'win' first row seats at the ceremony. The graduating class for 2011(next year) is running this raffle. Noone in the current graduating class knew anything about it but the principal approved it. First of all, tickets are free, each family gets a certain number(5 I think) The auditorium where the ceremony is is huge. I have been to my older dd's graduation from both elem and middle school(100 kids for elem, 250 for ms) and there is not a bad seat in the house. I find this latest 'fund raiser' appalling! Opinions?

I kinda think it is an "easy" fundraiser for the school. No costs or any set-up on the school's part.

My first reaction to this "raffle" is that it's silly and I don't get why they would do this :confused3 ... however, I am curious to know how much are they selling the raffle tickets for? ... and what are they planning to do with the raffle money they collect? ... maybe some more info as to why they decided to have this raffle will change my initial opinion ...

Front row seats to an elementary graduation are a prize? Maybe it's the phase of my life. But I've got a five year old right now, so I stick to the back row in case I need to make an early exit.

My opinion is that graduations for grades earlier than high school graduations are ridiculous, and raffles for front-row seats for said graduations are ridonkluous.

As with everything that goes on with school functions these days, about the only reaction I have is a "roll eye" maneuver. Other than that, I wouldn't give it another thought. I also wouldn't be buying tickets for the raffle.

Not a big deal. But I probably wouldn't buy a ticket.

LOL. In our district, they are now "Recognition Ceremonies". They're still a pain in the neck AFAIC. When they got rid of the cap and gown ceremony for 8th grade graduation, some parents were up in arms. Give me a break, it's not as if it's 1935 and half the class is skipping high school and getting a job.

I'm bothered by a few things I guess. First off, I think that the lower grade has no business 'selling' seats at our grades graduation especially without discussion. I also just think it sends a wrong message. I am having a hard time articulating why it bothers me so much but it just screams all kinds of wrong to me.

btw, it's actually a 'moving up' ceremony:rotfl2: What's even more ridiculous is that they have another one when they leave middle school 2 years later!

I see what's bothering you... it seems as if the graduating class is being used to make money for the school they're leaving, without even having control of the fundraiser.

But if this is the first year they're trying this, I can see why they asked the 2011 kids to run it. The 2010 kids and parents might say, "Ugh, we have to sell raffle tickets again? For our own graduation? And the money is going to stay here and we won't even benefit!"

If you think of the work involved in running the fundraiser, it makes sense for 2011 kids and parents to run it. I think, when it's their turn to graduate, they won't mind having the 2012s run it... and they will buy the raffle tickets happily... because they had their turn selling the tickets the year before.

So no, there's no problem. It's not like there are hundreds of parents camped out on line to ensure they get those front row seats, is it? It's a nice perk to sit up front but nobody's being denied their hearts' desire by the raffle.

Wouldn't bother me, but iwouldn't be buying a ticket. I think elementary graduations are silly. We have honors chapel where children in all grades who have made honor roll all year are honored in the normal Tuesday chapel service.

I don't see anything wrong with the fundraiser, but I am another that doesn't get elementary school graduation ceremonies.

I think that the only reserved front row seats should be to accommodate parents with a handicap such as a parent with low vision or a deaf parent who needs and interpreter. Otherwise seats should be on a first come first serve basis.

I am more appalled by the idea of elementary school graduations. ;)

My thoughts exactly. This whole graduating from every stinking grade has gotten ridiculous!! You go to school for 12 years and then graduate. If your so inclined you go on to college and then graduate. We over do this feel good crap.
