Worst place you had to go to avoid bad weather on a Disney cruise...

Well, we didn't end up there but we almost had to go to South Carolina. Now I'm sure that South Carolina would be a great place to visit but NOT when you are planning on going to the Caribbean! Anyway we ended up in Key West insead of St. Marteen. I loved Key West and can't wait to get back there someday. We have cruised twice during hurricane season and wouldn't hesitate to do so again. The captain will do his best to keep you in the tropics without putting your safety at risk.

Yes Monserboo, it was the cruise that departed on Sept. 30. I am just dying to go on the Western Caribbean but don't see it happening anytime in the near future.

I was on that Sept. 2000 cruise. We loved Key West so much that we are booked on the Sept. 14 Western cruise. We don't mind getting diverted if need be. Hey, its an adventure!

We were on the 10/6/01 7 day cruise and went to San Juan instead of St. Maarten. It was beautiful and they threw in an extra day at Castaway Cay for our "inconvenience". They can inconvenience me anytime they want. We had no rain etc as they did all they could to make our voyage great.

One cruise last fall ended up in Charleston, SC instead of Nassua due to a hurricane. Being from SC I love this state but it would be terrible going to Charleston instead of the Bahamas. We can go to Charleston any time. But I do understand that is the risk you take sailing that time of year and the captain has to keep his ship and passagers safe.

We are cruising this October and are praying for no hurricanes.

we were so happy with KW we made sure we put on our survey that it should be added to the regular itinerary.....looks like we weren't the only ones who felt the same way :D

Ned Land,
You said you are going during hurricane season...would that be Sept? I am going Sept 8-12. I hope if I'm diverted it to somewhere cool!! Of course anyplace but here is cool.

Sept is considered prime hurricane season. However, I agree, any place but work is worth going to LOL

My husband have always said they can just take us and let us float around on the Magic for a week and that would work for us. No work no hassles. That is a true vacation!

It would be a blessing if it only affected the Nassau part of the trip. Castaway Cay is very nice, but Nassau is perhaps the worst city to visit in the Caribbean (after Freeport). If the captain took us to San Juan, PR, Aruba, Cancun, etc. it would be fine with me. The ports are really awesome with classy shopping and good food. Nassau is mostly trinkets shopping. I suppose if you do excursions it is very nice.

Aruba is out of hurricane pathways so we would be safe there.

I was staying at the Wilderness Lodge during Floyd in 1999. It ended up being the best vacation of our lives since the parks were nearly empty. Disney is well-prepared for this kind of stuff.

I was also on the 9/30/00 cruise, and enjoyed Key West as well. We did the Fury Catamaran snorkeling trip and loved it.

Cantw8, Hurricane season is from June through November, but the prime months are usually August, September, and October. I've sailed three times during hurricane season and only been re-routed the one time.

I can feel for the people who went to Charleston instead of Nassau. Not to badmouth Charleston, but it's not really the tropical port of call you'd expect. The problem with re-routing the 3- and 4-day cruises is that there aren't really very many ports where the ship can call and be back to Port Canaveral on time. They certainly couldn't swap Cancun or Aruba for Nassau on the 4-day trip. Aruba is a good 500+ miles from St. Maarten, and it takes the Magic 2+ days to get down to St. Maarten

On our 3-day cruise on the Magic in August 1999, we missed our day in Nassau due to hurricane Dennis. Instead, we had a day at sea, which was actually quite fun. The captain managed to divert us to some really nice, sunny weather.

However, the following day, we could not get into Castaway Cay and we were diverted back to Nassau. It was a Sunday and the market and most everything else was closed. We just spent some time at the beach on Paradise Island, and we did have a good time.

Of course, missing Castaway Cay meant we just HAD to take another DCL cruise 6 months later, so we could find out what we missed! ;)

cantw8,

We're on the Wonder on Sept. 8th too! I don't care where the Wonder goes as long as the sun is shining un us!! The ship is so beautiful, it's a pleasure just being on the Wonder!!

I too, was on the 10-6-01 Magic that went to San Juan and Castaway Cay twice. I LOVED it. I was GLAD, because the only thing I was NOT looking forward to, was going to St. Maarten. I was so pleased to have missed it. San Juan was a very historical city and was nice to explore. We had fun.
