Hi - we just watched the VC DVD. My hubby is really want to buy from Disney direct but I'm not convinced that buying resale won't work.

Being able to use my points to travel to Italy etc via the world collection may just decide this but honestly I don't see any active threads about using your WDW points to do this.

Can someone that has used points in the world collection comment on your experiences? Is this, like the cruise, a bad use of points?

Any thoughts are welcome.

You're not seeing a lot of threads about trading out because not a lot of members do it. Anything other than staying at DVC resorts isn't a great use of points. There's no guarantee that even with a direct purchase, you would be able to use your points that way. When you buy DVC, all you are guaranteed is the right to use your points for stays in DVC resorts, subject to availability. Anything and everything else is subject to change or termination.

If you want to trade out, buy a different timeshare, and buy it resale. Just about any other reputable RCI timeshare will allow you to trade into those same outside resorts, and will cost a fraction of what DVC does.

If you want to do both DVC stays and RCI trades equally, consider buying just enough DVC points to cover your DVC stays, and buy a separate timeshare for your other timesharing stays.

yep - DVC's best value is in using it for DVC resorts. that includes VGC, HHI and aulani and such.

using it for cruises or RCI or other trades outside of DVC is fine if you have owned for a while and just want to burn some points, but it's not a worthwhile consideration for a new purchaser. you are much better off paying cash directly for cruises than buying DVC only to lose that much value in the process of trading out of the system.

Even at the same price, buying to trade is not a reasonable option. It's either too expensive, difficult to impossible to schedule or both. The best option by far is to buy the points one needs to use for DVC resorts and pay cash for the other options, that's true even if one buys retail anyway. Buying for these type of options is a double whammy in that it both forced retail at a higher price AND more points to do so. I am not aware of a situation in the timeshare world where this is a reasonable option and there are many such opportunities. When I first bought into Bluegreen, one could use points to pay dues. I could have used points to pay dues and have 20% of my points left over. Given my buy in, the up front would have been negligible in this situation so they would have been free points. Predictable and considered up front, this option changed such that the conversion is not at all favorable. It wouldn't have been reasonable even up front at then retail prices.

Some of the World Collection is less pricey than others in terms of points, depending on when you travel, but there are also exchange fees and the like. It's generally the case that renting out an equivalent number of DVC points and using the cash will buy you more vacation and take you further.

I would say if your hesitancy is being tied to regular (annual/bi-annual) Disney trips, DVC may not be the right fit overall.

IMO Disney offers the non-DVC destinations or use of points only to make DVC seem more valuable for people that are looking to buy.

In the past non-DVC availability was mixed with even DCL having DVC black out dates. DVC added the $95 booking fee a few years ago and I expect that the fee will increase soon.

The direct exchange options are not guaranteed and the reality is that high demand times & choices are unlikely to be available even in the best exchange scenario and given the fact that few DVC members are enlightened enough on exchanges to maximize any chance of success, it's even less likely to work out.

^ I hadn't thought of that.

I really don't have a problem with using my points at dvc resorts... hubby & I just differ because he feels like we are getting "extra value" by buying straight from Disney rather than resale.

IF Disney was selling the alleged Fort Wilderness expansion, hubby might be winning this disagreement. But all information that I'm reading seems to point to us purchasing resale.

Disney is great a creating illusions and illusions of value, they set the rules and perks in their favor to push buyers to direct buying. It's like telling an exotic car buyer that he will look great driving his car on the roads of the Italian Alps when he lives in Kansas. That being said you have to decide which is right for you.

There's no real value in buying direct unless you want a new resort like poly-- and you plan on staying at poly regularly.

Resale points can be converted into Rci, as if you bought direct points from Disney. The resale restrictions for resale points vs direct purchases from Disney is negligible (unless you plan on buying annual passes regularly for a large household). The 10% discount on meals/merchandise and access to member events is also not worth paying an extra $10k to buy direct.

However, value is a percieved notion! If paying over 5 figures makes one feel better, and you can afford it, then why not?
