Working for the Red Cross...what can you tell me?

I am taking a phlebotomy course this semester. The Professor explained that sometime near the end of the semester, reps from the Red Cross would be in handing out applications, and explaining their hiring process (they have their own training). She said the pay was better than average, it was union, and she warned that you would be expected to travel. (within your own state, day to day)

All that sounds good, but what I would like to know, is would I have an opportunity to travel out of state, to say a disaster site? Or even out of the country? The thought of travelling like that intriques me. I would love to be able to do something like that.

Do you know anyone who works for the Red Cross? What can you tell me? TIA

My neighbor started working for the Red Cross last year, after she finished getting her phlebotomy training/certificate. We live in South Jersey, and she started off getting initial experience/basic training in Philly. Now that she finished that, she does the blood drives and travels a lot throughout NJ. I suppose phlebomotists new to the Red Cross would get their teeth cut on this type of work - numerous IV starts everyday, day after day, before being able to belong to the groups that go to emergencies. I'll have to ask her.
