Work Transfer

Was just asked by my company to accept a transfer in jobs to a new one about 2 hours away. Everything about the job offer is fantastic, securtiy, more pay, advancement in the company etc. The only down side is our oldest is in the middle of his senior year of HS (this is the only school district he's ever attended). He's had an offer from a friend to stay with them for the remainder of the year. We think we're going to take them up on the offer. Anyone have any opinions, right or wrong?

My mother & stepfather moved during my senior year of HS. Just like your son, it was the only school district I had been in so it meant alot to me to stay in the same school. I was able to stay in my HS and commute b/c it was 30 min away. I'm so glad they let me do that!

If someone you trust is willing to let him stay with them, I say do it. He can always drive home on weekends.

My older brother did this the last part of his senior year, he stayed with his best friend and their family. He was very happy he got to do it, and it worked out great.

I'd make sure I would sit down with the parents of the kids that offered and make sure everything was outlined concerning curfew/rules/expectations/etc. My brother was told that if he didn't keep his grades up and got into any trouble he'd be coming back with us. He was just fine.

Is there any way you can move first and the rest follow? By the time you moved there'd probably only be a few months anyway. I think you are smart to find a way he could stay. My Dad is 75 and still talks about how hard it was to move his last year of high school.

I agree. My cousin did this when my uncle got orders to go to Germany. She was in the midst of her senior year. She stayed in CO with a great friend of the family and a girl she was in school with until she graduated and started college then she moved to the dorm. Was much less upsetting than moving out of the country. Good luck with your decision.

Thats good that he can finish school where he is going now...can't you go and just get an apartment on your own for the few months and then once school ends the rest of the family moves??

I'm more inclined to agree with aprilgail on getting a small apartment or finding a way to commute. Your son's senior year is a big deal not only to him but to you & his mom as well. Think of all you'll be missing if he stays and you go.

We are in the process of this as well. DH started a new job in the middle of last month that is about 2 1/2 hours away. We are waiting for the end of the school year to move, first because there is a good possibility of him taking a job here next spring and we want to wait and see about that but also because we didn't want to move the kids mid year, and they are only in 8th and 5th grade. It isn't the ideal situation, but it is working out ok. DH is staying with family where his new job is and comes home on weekends. We will go up there for various things too.

By the time you sell your house, etc., half the school year will be over anyway. Spring is a better time to sell, so if you can move ahead of the rest of the family, I would say do that. If not then I would let your son stay with the friends that offered. I know a lot of people that have done that.
