Word of warning re: gift cards

I'm sitting here completely befuddled and unsure how I'm gonna figure this out. A month ago I bought about 20 Target gift cards in varying denominations....I didn't write the amounts on them assuming I'd easily be able to figure it out with the reciepts.

 Not so. I haven't been able to match one single gift card number to a reciept.

Remember to write the amount ON the gift card right away because you might not be able to figure it out later!

Now, if anyone can give me ideas on how to figure this out it'd be sooooo appreciated. LOL I don't believe I can call the toll free number unless I scratch the back to get the code and oh how I don't wanna do that. In fact I don't think I can scratch it off anyway without opening the gift card packaging. Dang!

Does it have a long number and the scratch off part? I always verify gift card amounts via the toll free number on the back before giving them out. Afraid if it may not have made it on there correctly I guess. Anyway, some of them just make you put in the long number and not have to scratch of the "pin" number.

If not, I'm afraid scratching it off is the only way to go.

Thanks MomRN. I just tried to call and yep, I will have to scratch off all the numbers. I'm disappointed because it looks kinda cheesy to give them with the code scratched off.

Oh well...........

Did you ask at the store if they could scan them for the balance?

Here's what I would do:

I'd KEEP ALL of the giftcards for myself (heck, I'm always spending money in Target) to use and I'd go out & buy new gift cards all over again to give as the gifts. :thumbsup2

Take them to target and have each one go through the register. It will print out a balance for each swipe.

Yup. Just take em back. They'll run the barcode under at guest services and you can put them together with the right balances. That's all we need. Now if you call or go online then you'll have to peel off the silver. Be worth it to spend a little extra time in line I think.

Take the cards to Target and ask any cashier or Customer Service to check the balances for you.

Easy peasy!

Yep - I did this when I did the same thing last year. They will do it in a couple minutes.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. I would get groceries most likely and rebuy new cards..sharpie marker in hand to write the value on them right away.

Just call the phone number on the back on the cards. :confused3 Seems easier than going to the store.
