Wooo Hooo!!! New Lottery in NC!!!!!!!

OK, fellow Tarheels, let's discuss!!!!

I love the idea of the lottery, because I really enjoyed playing the slot machines when I had a chance to visit a casino a few years ago. I can totally understand how people become addicted - luckily, I don't live near a casino, so my exposure is limited. You would absolutely have to go in with the idea that the money you were spending was for entertainment, and that ultimately you would lose it all.

That's the way I'm looking at the lottery, too, except that I'm keeping a secret fantasy going that the money we raise now will go for my middle schooler's college scholarship in six years!!! So I'm going to play once in a while, including today, the first day of the new NC lottery. So far I spent $20.00 and won $3.00. Woo Hoo!!! Down 17 on the first day!!!!

I don't think this could have come soon enough. I am a teacher and the school system has been in desperate need of the funds. I hope that we start getting better materials to work with and just a little more money to take home at the end of the month. When I finished with a master's degree I was so sad that I was doing something I loved but was only getting paid $28,000 per year. I've seriously considered leaving the profession b/c I am a person who spent thousands on a high quality education and worked myself to death to make the same as many high school grads. However, I love the actual job itself...it makes it so hard. Maybe this is the answer we've been praying for

It's about time...I'm glad it's here! We have been going to SC for lottery tickets and I have always thought it was such a shame to put money in their pockets when our state could benefit just as well.

Another one here who thinks this will be a good thing for our schools. Went on my lunch and bought five scratch-offs, one one ticket. So I can't quit work just yet!

I'll throw down a few bucks whenever the pay off is huge! I have had a recurring dream for years that I win $93 million. I always thought it was strange since we didn't have the lottery in NC.

I do hope the $ helps education.

Anybody know what the story is with lottery winnings and losses and your taxes? I assume you have to report winnings but do you get to write off losses???

I feel a little like the last kid in the class to finally have the "cool" toy that everyone else has had for the whole school year, and I finally got it at Spring Break!!!
