Check the mapquest route; they usually take you on a roundabout way up to the freeway and back down. As the crow flies, LGB is supposed to be 14 miles and SNA 12 miles. I've read that LGB is actually very easy to drive to DL, because it's almost a straight shot all the way down Katella. And car rental is very easy from LGB; the rentals are right there at the terminal.
LBG is generally quite a bit cheaper than SNA; like $100 more a ticket from Seattle. Wow, the JetBlue fares have been great! And Alaska is trying to match them, but I think JetBlue has more flights.
Taxis are flat rate $40 to the DL hotels from both airports, and usually $50-55 on the way back, unless you can get a coupon from your hotel for the flat rate.
Super Shuttle is quite a bit more expensive from LGB than from SNA. SNA, it's $10 per person each way. LGB, it's $35 for the first person, and $9 each additonal person. There's a coupon for $2. per person, each way; it's the last coupon on the list here:

We took a limo for a fun splurge from SNA to GCH last March. Although it was fun and I'd do it again, I would call the hotel and ask for limo recommendations. Ours had some issues, including no seatbelts on the jump seat, not as nice a car as they'd told us we'd get, and a rather clueless chauffer on the return trip. (don't use Starz Limo!) We were quoted $90, but it was more than that and they were fuzzy or misleading on the tipping practices. It ended up being more like $150 with tip.
Hope that helps!
