One of my fellow travelers is very motion sensitive on simulator rides:....should he avoid these attractions

I am very prone to motion sickness and have to avoid many rides. I find that as soon as I start getting ill on Spiderman, I just take off my 3D glasses for a little bit and I am fine.

I don't suggest FJ if they are very prone. However, have them walk through the queue with you. It is an attraction in itself.

Spiderman was fine for me. I felt like there were enough pauses between the simulator parts that I could ride without getting sick. FJ, is another story. I had to sit down pretty much as soon as I stepped off the ride, right there in the exit, right next to a wheel chair, actually. My DH joked that I needed it to make it out of the building! I also felt pretty bad after The Simpsons, but recovered quicker than FJ. That one really did me in for the morning!

I get motion sick pretty easy (can't ride stuff like Mission Space at Disney). I loved, loved, loved forbidden journey. However, I loved it a little too much and rode it twice in a row. Both myself and my husband (who never, ever gets motion sick) walked away the second time feeling pretty rough. So, I'd tell them to give it a try ONCE.

Be sure to ride FJ BEFORE trying a butterbeer. That messed me up, and I almost never get motion sick!

Had you taken any motion sickness medication? I will have the patch for our cruise and was hoping that will make the ride ok.

Butterbeer is so sticky sweet that I can only imagine how sick that made you!!!!

It was enough to make me need to take a break and sit down for a few mins. Nowadays I'll ride FJ 1-2x (single riders FTW!) then head to the Hog's Head and get a butterbeer, or Three Broomsticks for a pumpkin juice, and be on my way. :cool2:

This will be our 1st ever trip to US and am hoping that I can enjoy it! Aside from worrying about size (I am of the larger proportions enough to worry whether can fit) I have a problem with my inner ears that causes me to get dizzy easy... Weird thing though... I never seem to have a problem with coasters but have to avoid merry-go-rounds or anything that goes in a circle!

That is exactly like me, rides like Dumbo will do me in, lol. I have a problem with motion simulators though too. Anything like Star Tours is completely off limits.

I still love all theme parks though!

I have never had an issue on Star Tours, but the one and only time I rode Soarin' was woozy for hours!

Soarin' doesn't affect me at all but anything like Star Tours will ruin my entire day.

Same for myself and my daughter. My daughter went on FJ last night she got very sick. She was really glad she went on (big HP fan), but she won't go on again. If the person in your party chooses to go on FJ make sure they haven't eaten prior... have something ready to settle their stomach afterwards. My son doesn't have motion problems and he had no problem at all.

DD hasn't gotten sick on any of the other Universal rides.

Skip or consider skipping the following then:
Caro-Seuss-el
Cat in the Hat (has hard spins)
Men in Black (lots of spins)
One Fish Two Fish
Storm Force
Popeye & Blutos (white water rapids ride in a round raft. The raft spins, but not always fast)

Take a handful of gingersnaps (cookies) to nibble on. Ginger root has long been used to counter motion sickness.

A dose of Dramamine might be a good idea as well. :)

Has anyone tried the ginger pills? Just wondering. I can't take spinning rides but I've never had a reaction to a simulated ride like Soarin. I hope FJ is ok. I can't even watch my kids in the tea cups , it makes me woozy.

I get a little motion sick but not much. I can handle pretty much all rides but Spiderman and FJ were horrible. The castle was worth the line at FJ but I should have exited before the ride. It was herky-jerky and really a bad ride. I can not believe that FJ is considered some type of 'great' ride. Horrible ride but great castle tour! My husband and kids could not believe all the hype for FJ after we rode it. They didn't get motion sick, but they didn't like the ride at all either. It was like a bad carnival ride with dementors made out of an old bed sheet. Now Spiderman was something my kids adored but it definitely made me woozy. I took off the 3d glasses during the ride but I wouldn't go back on it a second time.

You may want to ask about this over on the cruise boards. That's where I was reminded about ginger root. The pills are concentrated enough that they carry strong cautions about not being used for children but they should be fine for adults. Since I was particularly interested in my 8yo not getting motion sick on the cruise we didn't try them.
