So I'm looking at the dress another poster picked out for a wedding.

The Misses size dress is $69.50
The Women size is $79.50
Petite $69.50

I understand that larger sizes use more material which is why it costs more....so shouldn't the petite size cost less because it uses less material?

Yes...sometimes they charge MORE for smaller sizes. Several years ago, my brother married a very thin woman, and her wedding gown (Reem Acra) cost extra to get in her small size.

They charge more for non-standard sizes because they can. People in non-standard sizes usually have less choice. My petite sized sisters complain about it all the time.

A 14W probably doesn't take more fabric than an 18 misses, but they charge more for the W.

I work for a manufacturer of outerwear, and actually making smaller size does run up production costs. The difference in the cutting on the cuttting machine and efficiency of how much of the fabric is wasted is the difference in price, not just the amount of fabric is on the finished garment.

Not necessarily. A 14 Petite is going to take more material than a 4 Misses.

When my brother got married, I was in a 12 or 14 dress size. When I was sized for a bridesmaid gown, they measured me as an 18 and charged extra. I thought it was going to be way too big but it fit perfect. So it seemed like they were inflating the sizes to get more money.

My DH has very little hair. He used to joke with his barber that he should get half priced hair cuts. The barber would joke back that he was going to charge him more for a finders fee.

Same reasoning behind why do airlines make you pay for 2 seats if you are fat, but don't let me pay for 1/2 a seat for my 3 year old, who is very petite and doesn't even take up 1/2 a seat?

Yes, but there is not as big of a market for tall men's clothes (well, or at least they are not as widely available--with a husband who is 6'5" I always wish there was--we have given up on finding ANYthing that fits him in Europe) which means they mark those up because it is work to change the sizing for a small percentage of the sales. No fun but true.

For me it is the petite department that lacks. I go to the US and find anything and everything. Here, since I don't sew, it costs me additional $ to get hems on EVERYTHING.

Seriously, he shops every time he is in the US on business--and we order custom made suits for him--it is hard to fit his long legs and braod shoulders anywhere (he does not have the gut to go with the shoulders thankfully, but most mass produced suits assume otherwise).

I wish I had some tips for you on where to find petite clothing. I can tell you it is not hard to learn to sew a hem

My friend tells me she will show me at least once a week. Somehow it never happens. I really should learn this, as aside from my son, we are ALL shorties.
