What is the difference between a woman's size 14 & 14w ?

The "W" stands for Woman's sizes aka "fuller" a regular 14 would be misses sizes.

Thank you I'm ordering walking shorts on line for my trip. I was a 12:mad:

In standard sizing (which the mfr. may or may not follow exactly) the measurements are:

Misses 14: 36/28/38 (back waist 16.5)
Women's 14W: 38/30/40 (back waist 15.5)

As a general rule, the W sizes (aka half-sizes) are cut more generously all the way around and are made for a shorter-waisted build. The bust is lower and the back is shorter than in a comparable Misses' sized garment. The neckline and armholes tend to be cut larger, too, but the sleeves tend to run a little longer, presumably to allow for a more fleshy shoulder and back.

Maybe that was standard 20 years ago, but right now, those measurements would be about a SIZE 6! Just look at all the major manufacturer size charts now, no way in hell is a 28-inch waist a Size 14.

For example, Land's End...certainly not a trendy place, just basic, solid clothes...gives these measurements for a SIX:

28-29 inch waist
38-inch hips

For a size FOURTEEN:

33-34 inch waist
43-inch hips

And that is for regular misses sizes, not women's sizes, just FYI. :)

Actually,

Among those sizes 14-16 range (both misses and womens), I find that the sizing really does vary from vendor to vendor....

It stinks but i always try everything on...sometimes it works...sometimes it's a shoehorn...

:confused3

This is one of my biggest peeves - why are women's clothes sizes so messed up? We have to try on EVERYTHING we buy because we can't go by the size on the garment.

My DH can go into ANY store, pick up a pair of pants from ANY manufacturer, not even bother to try them on, and he'll know that his 36 x 30 will fit when he gets home.

Why can't they do that with women's clothes?????:confused3

I always interpret the W as "Wide".

Me too! A zillion years ago, I was looking for something for my sister once and was reading off the sizes on the rack to her. I was saying, "14 Wide, 16 Wide..." I thought she was going to beat me over the head. I seriously thought that's what the W meant. :confused3

So I learned the hard way that it stands for "Women." :rolleyes1

I ordered size 14 on line. I hate to shop. I'm leaving on the 19th:banana:
