Does anyone know if the Vegan option is 100 percent Vegan? My little one is allergic to eggs, milk, and nuts. Anyone know if there's a way I can find out for sure if he is safe to eat it? I really struggled there last time getting any info on what's in the food.

Thanks for any info you might have,

Jen

If they are calling something vegan, it's vegan.

Calling Disney Dining and asking to talk to the chef in charge of food allergies etc got me a call back from Chef Chris a year or so ago, and talkign with him was lovely. They have an overriding philosophy of making people happy with the food there...so if something doesn't "have to" have meat in it, it doesn't...the rice and beans at the Mexican places don't have lard etc in them, for instance. If something is called Vegetarian, it is, and if they are saying that something is vegan, it IS.

Just call Disney Dining and ask to be put through to the voicemail of the chef in charge of food allergies. Leave a clear precise message with your questions, along with name and phone number, and expect a call back a day or so later. It did take me a bit to work through to get to someone, as the vm I was put through to did nothing but ring and ring, but I did get through!

Thank you! I will do that! Last time disney dining just told me that I could ask at any counter service restaurant for an ingredient list, but the reality was that only the pretzel cart CM gave me one. No one else knew anything and my son spent his vacation eating burgers with no buns and pretzels, because we didn't know what else we could feed him.

I wasn't sure what true Vegan is. I know meatless is Vegan, but I wasn't sure if milk and eggs were part of that. There's a lemon cake, but I suppose it could be made with rice milk instead of cow's?

Oh! I just realized you're saying Vegan and Vegetarian. Which is which? This is Vegetarian. I'm so embarrassed, I didn't realize those were two different things...

Vegetarian just means no meat. Vegan is no meat or dairy products or anything like that.

The vegetarian meal does have cake in it. So you may want to questions this specifically incase it includes eggs or milk.

Oh, thanks everyone! I really appreciate the info. I'll call them next week and see if I can talk to the chef.

That's really shocking. They do have the binders, I've seen them! I've perused them at the candy/treats corner in Critter Country, and I've looked at it at Pacific Wharf Cafe, I believe.

As someone said, vegetarian means no meat. Sometimes people will use it as shorthand, but will also eat fish. But Disney doesn't seem to define it as including fish. :)

Vegan is much more serious. You're not even eating honey if you're vegan.

The chef I talked to that day had just made a *raw* lasagna type of dish for a man who eats a raw diet...he was very proud that he was able to do that! (it was at napa rose of course, but they want to help everyone)

I did run into issues at the Trattoria, but it was b/c of that celebration cake which is made off at the bakery, not by anyone there IN the park itself. That was kind of a pain, but hopefully our experience (and we didn't order it) made them realize that they need the ingredient list there with them.

(we're vegetarian, but there's also a need by the guys in my family to avoid anything based on corn syrup. there's a lot out there based on corn syrup! so there's a lot we avoid at the parks, sigh, and we wouldnt' be able to eat much of anything if they didn't make ingredient lists available to us!)

You're kidding? We went to 4 different counter service places and they all acted like I was nuts. I mostly wanted to know if the hamburger buns were milk/egg free. Most chain restaurant ones are, but I wasn't sure if the ones at Disney were. This was just last year. I really wish they'd just have a big packet at guest relations that one could pick up if needed...

the hamburger buns are definitely egg free (I'm allergic to eggs) but i'm not sure if they are dairy free.

With the cake in the picnic, even if they used rice milk it would be a no go because of the eggs

I do too.

By the way Molly, I can only imagine how hard it is to find stuff without corn syrup!

Big huge pain! But in a funny way, Disneyland helped us really narrow down what the problem ingredients were. ****DS having a total freakout while DH is falling asleep on a bench just after they shared a dole whip? Let's go look up the ingredients, aha, corn syrup solids! Scratch that treat off the list. Hey, let me read the Uncrustables package...oh crud, corn syrup AND HFCS? (that one was fun since DS was halfway through it and was HUNGRY, but he hates the feeling that happens, and even though he was only 3 he made the decision to stop eating it and go wait in line (lunchtime, pacific wharf area at DCA, crazy lines)) (and that discovery totally explained all the cruddy zoo days, since it was his big treat! and zoo days nearly always ended back then with him screaming and kicking, and me having to carry him to the car with him fighting all the way)****

In case you guys like veggie burgers, unless they've changed, again, I think they use the garden burger "malibu" burger. I'm not sure if it contains cheese etc, but if it's otherwise safe, just know it has *chunks* of vegetables in it. I thought it tasted quite delicious, but DS absolutely refused, because he could SEE the carrots and broccoli etc in it (and he normally likes those veggies, but not in a veggie burger). So if he is visual in the same way, just know to eat it in a dark corner, LOL.
