Wk of Nov 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi all!!!

Quick drive-by:

Judy-- Happy Anniversary!!! :cheer2:

For those of you with shoe issues, I also HIGHLY recommend finding a reputable specialty store where you can be fitted and that has a return guarantee. It might be a little more expensive that way, but worth it's weight in gold.

Yesterday I discovered that my top indoor running distance--- and it is five miles. I did five miles on the indoor track (45 laps) in 42:03, or 8:24/mile pace. I need to get another 5 in this evening.... just hoping I have the time.

Happy training all!

Sunny -- I LOVE that song. It is from "9 Mile" and really speaks to me, even if it is a rap song! :rolleyes1

I haven't done too much of it yet, but I think that is because I am so intimidated about the incredulous looks I've gotten.

Yes, I was quite hesitant about "coming out the closet" on that Eminem song

That Lonestar song is great! I'll have to get that into my playlist, too.

I'm not talking this year, either. After letting everyone at work and home know that I was told I shouldn't run anymore by a NS, I'm laying low. I feel that everyone around me thinks it's irresponsible. Well, I've been responsible for the past 20 years, so phewey on them!

As for you, missy-- no more intimidation. You are an endurance athlete, you rock, you've overcome obstacles that most people would just accept and remain inactive. I plan to hear all about YOUR MARATHON :cheer2: (as often as you like ;) )

Oh darn. A sensor just came back online and that means I have to work again.

Sunny

Pat -- I am so glad we will see you at Minnie! YAY!!! Now, we have to figure out who was looking into getting a DVC villa for a huge girls sleepaway weekend.

Sunny -- You are too sweet. I think everyone just wants you to be well. They aren't being mean, just loving! :grouphug:

Kevin -- I definitely agree on the running store thing. Those guys are experts in finding the right kind of shoe. Unfortunately, ours doesn't stock women's wide widths, though they will order them. I'm just not that patient. I always need to walk out of there with a shoe instead of an order receipt. :confused3

Judy -- When Sara told me on Sunday that she has my marathon lists, too, I was flabbergasted. But I have to remind everyone to add "put chip on running shoe" on the "night before the race" part of the list. Oh, and you guys can all remove "Howard" from your list of stuff to take with you. :rotfl:

ETA: This was on my Disney calendar yesterday and I thought of all our WISHers who are dealing with snow or cold weather:
"I'm tired, and I'm hungry. And my tail's froze and my nose is froze. And my ears are froze. And my toes are froze." Lucky from 101 Dalmations (1961). Just how cute is that?!?!

I'm so ashamed!! I have not run since October 29!!! I did an adv. race the weekend of oct 21 (which included about 13 miles of trekking (no trails or roads, just woods) and then I ran 15 the Wed after that and then then the 10 mile trail run on Oct. 29th. I have not done ANY running since. I have mt. biked frequently and did the race this weekend. I biked twice this week for 1:30 each time but NO RUNNING. I have a 18-20 mile trail torture run this sunday, but I'm feeling SO BEHIND.

SOMEONE RELIEVE MY GUILT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vic - I hope you find shoes.

Sunny - the boy was very excited about the TM smile!!

Dave - that is so awesome that your wife is really getting into the running. That must really encourage you.

Kevin - were you a bad boy w/ your training schedule last yr? If so, tell me about it so i can feel less guilty!!!!

Christa - good luck on your 20miler.

Mel, Stephen and Krista - I was trying to figure out how hines the dog is part of a dream team. I am just totally sports ignorant!!! My mom is so ashamed!!

Judy - Happy anniversary. I think you can say that exercise is part of your lifestyle now!!!!

Yes, I was thinking, that dog is really talented!! :teacher:

Off topic, my DS9 just noticed all these Star Wars characters. :ewok: :yoda: :chewy: :darth:

Guess what's for Christmas this year: Star Wars Imperial Star Ship, Lego Star Wars II Gamecube game, electronic light saber...I see a theme here!

 Hi everyone! I'm so proud of all of you for training so hard!! It's really not that far off now...which is both exciting and down right terrifying!!! :rolleyes1

So I need some BLISTER ADVICE!! Ugh..my orthotics...which are a dream in terms of helping me overcome my injuries  have unfortunately caused me some blisters. I know it's not unusual...especially since they are forcing my feet into new positions....but ouchie!!! :guilty: Does anyone have any really good tried and true blister remedies? I have a blister that just won't heal on the bottom of my instep that...no lie...is about the size of a half dollar now. I've tried a lot of things....but it's not getting better..it just keeps growing :(. Somebody must have some advice for me :confused3 .

Other than that training has been great. To be injury free for the past two weeks has been a dream!!! I ran 6 miles on Monday, 40 minutes on Wed and 46 minutes today. I'm averaging about a 9:30 mpm sometimes a bit quicker sometimes a bit slower but generally in that area. This is a nice pace for me and it seems to be keeping me out of trouble ;). I plan to do my 16 miler this weekend at a nice 10:30 mpm if possible. I have a nice easy (ok maybe not easy but not running) yoga class tomorrow :).

Good luck to everyone on their weekend runs!!! :goodvibes :grouphug:

Well, heck!

Had bad storms move through yesterday and blow down a large tree.

I decided to take the afternoon and start cutting it up to have it hauled off. Stepped wrong on a small branch and twisted my ankle a good one.

So, as I sit here looking at a large blob of red, blue and purple, looks like I won't be running for a bit.

Vic--Oh no! Hope your ankle heals quickly! :wizard:

Had a terrible run today! Was supposed to do 12, just got in 6. I had to use the TM b/c, once again, no one to watch the kiddos. And I just felt awful--however, I did experiment with the Clif shot bloks, and really like them--so no more GU for me! I was only going to do 6 this weekend, so hopefully I'll get the 12 in instead. Here's hoping!

Amybeth - I would try moleskin. Also, there are some socks that are really good. I think they are either techsox or teksocks. I'm pretty sure they are techsox.com. Check them out, they might help!!

Vic - OUCH. So sorry aobut your ankle. Hope it heals quickly.

MelR, you will get back at running! I am sure that adventure race needs a little recovery time. What did you say, you were up at 1 a.m. for the 3 a.m. start and then battling the elements all day?? Rest up girl, you will be fine and the running will come. :thumbsup2

Vic, sorry about the ankle, rest and ice. :wizard:

Amy, ouch, I would go back to the pod. to see if he can make adjustments to your orthotics. I had to go back once for an adjustment, but I never had blisters. That should not be happening.

I experimented with my 8 mile run yesterday and did a run 5/walk 1 because I think most of my half marathon pacing group is doing that. I liked it, but wouldn't you know I came out with about the same pace as if I ran the whole way! :confused3

I am tired today but need to get another 16 miles in this morning. I am so dreading these back to back runs in preparation for Goofy. We will see how this one goes. Fresh battery in my MP3 player because I am doing this solo...oh, do I miss by running buddy. :sad1: MelR, do I know how you feel, when will EC be healthy again?

Colleen

Greetings. T.G.I.F.! :cool1:

I did 30 min on the TM this morning. I walked 20 of them @ 3.8 and jogged the last 10 @ 4.5. Then I did ten vigorous minutes on the stationary bike. Nothing very exciting. I'm saving myself for tomorrow. 8 miles. Whooo hooo!

Vic - Oh no! :wizard: for a quick recovery.

Geez, not much of a post today, is it? Oh well, I blab too much anyway.

Good morning team!!! :sunny: Happy Friday!!! 7 weeks from today I'll just be arriving in Orlando. I can't decide if I am excited or scared. A little bit of both, I think. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill last night, I was supposed to do 45 minutes--roughly 4.5 miles for me, but I just couldn't go a step further. Yesterday was the 3rd day I ran in a row and I could feel it, especially in my left calf which has been bothering me on and off since the summer. After my run, I slathered on Icy Hot all over my calf and shins, I smelled like a medicine cabinet, but I felt better. My calf is a little tight today, so I'm going to put more Icy Hot on tonight before I go to bed in preparation for my 16 miles tomorrow. Stephen and I are running together tomorrow, at least for 9 miles, that should be interesting, the last time we ran together it didn't turn out so great. I think we made it about a half mile before I told him to just go.

Is anyone dealing with extreme hunger because of marathon training? I am hungry ALL THE TIME!! I'll give you an example: I woke up yesterday at 6:30 starving, I ate a bagel when I got to work, a little after 8:00. By 11:00 my stomach is growling again, not oh, I could eat, but actual audible growling. At 11:30 I ate a banana and by 12:30 my stomach is growling again. I ate lunch at 1:00, I had a Healthy Choice pizza, baked Doritos and a granola bar--roughly 500-600 calories, my normal lunch size. On the way home, at 5:30, my stomach is growling again!! I have been eating this type of food for the past couple of years--about 700-800 calories for breakfast, snack, and lunch and I haven't had any problems with being hungry all the time. No wonder I can't lose any weight!!!! :)

Amy-- :wizard: :wizard: for your blister. That does not sound lovely. Good luck on your 16 miler tomorrow. We'll compare notes tomorrow afternoon. By the way, you are speedy!!

Vic-- :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your ankle!!!! Not very good timing, huh? Keep icing your ankle, keep it elevated, and take Advil for the swelling.

MelR--I honestly think you will be fine. It's not like are at home sitting on the couch and eating Snickers bars. You are out biking hundreds of miles and running adventure races, I don't think you are going to lose any fitness or endurance. Get rested up, you'll be back to running in no time.

If anyone needs to do Christmas shopping online, toysrus.com has free shipping on most of their toys. I just finished shopping for 8 of my 9 nieces and nephews.

I downloaded some new music last night and I have a new favorite to run to:

I Run For Life by Melissa Etheridge

It's been years since they told her about it
The darkness her body possessed
And the scars are still there in the mirror
Everyday that she gets herself dressed
Though the pain is miles and miles behind her
And the fear is now a docile beast
If you ask her why she is still running
She'll tell you it makes her complete

I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend:| I run for life

It's a blur since they told me about it
How the darkness had taken its toll
And they cut into my skin and they cut into my body
But they will never get a piece of my soul
And now I'm still learning the lesson
To awake when I hear the call
And if you ask me why I am still running
I'll tell you I run for us all

I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend:| I run for life

And someday if they tell you about it
If the darkness knocks on your door
Remember her remember me
We will be running as we have before
Running for answers
Running for more

I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend
I run for hope
I run to feel
I run for the truth
For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend:| I run for life

Have something to wipe your tears on as you run!!!

Krista - OMG yes! Sometimes I feel like I am STARVING! I've really been struggling with this. Sometimes it feels like I just can not get enough. I'm thinking of seeing a nutritionist...

Oh and everytime I hear that song I get goosebumps. I turn it up so loud and sing at the top of my lungs. :teeth: I love that song!

My training has been very light this week. I am still dealing with back pain and would rather feel better than injure myself more. Thankfully this weekend is a cut back week and I only need 6 miles. I remember back to being stressed when 6 miles WAS my highest ever! So hopefully I will get through it and not be in too much pain.

This weekend is the start of deer hunting here, so DH will be leaving me with the girls. Thankfully he can hunt locally, so he promised to come home for a couple hours and let me run my 6 miles. I haven't decided if I will hit the horrible circular track, or run outside. I know I will not do the treadmill unless I have to!!

Krista - I am always hungry. No matter what!! Maybe you need to eat more protein??

Carrie - That is funny that you told the hair appointment person. I have been letting it slip like crazy. I just feel so proud!!! I am working on a presentation that I have to give and I was wondering if I should just randomly slip it in there to see if anyone notices. Hmmmmm...

OK, gotta get some work done. It's Friday and I don't wanna work... I just wanna bang on my drums all day!!!!

Krista - I'm a hungry all the time person. I have been what i call "shakey hungry" all week. Which means that i'm basically shaking b/c i have not eaten enough calories. I drink an ensure plus (plus for 100 extra cals.) for a snack pretty often and i eat about 5 meals/day. That counts oatmeal for breakfast and usually something like cereal or ensure in the afternoon. Hope that helps!!

Jen - last year, about 2 weeks out, I told a random guy at the post office fo abosolutely no reason! :teeth:

Krista - Love that song!!!!!!! They played it durign extreme home makeover Sunday. Absolutely awesome.

Let the pie/cake/cookie - eating contest training begin!!!

I have been better this year, but I think part of that may be realted ot not doing the 14-miler. Things are starting to ramp up a bit, though.
