Wk Of Nov 11 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning everyone!

I am home from work today as the little guy (14 months) has croup. Not a lot of fun and leaves me wondering if I can bundle him up tomorrow and take him for a run anyway. I think cold air is supposed to be good for croup - or is that an old wives' tale?

Anyway, ran 2.5 last night at the Y on the treadmill. Kept to a 10:54 pace. I have found that I hit the 'sweat zone' at 1.5 miles. Can't wait to see what I look like as the mileage increases this winter!

Cindy Thanks for the link! I have only been using my previous 5K pace (9:38) for the speed intervals. I have been running otherwise at a slower pace of 10:54. Maybe I should slow it down then, I have been wondering about my ability to maintain this pace at a longer distance, but figured that increasing distance gradually was going to help that. Thanks again!

Jen Congrats! I still have a trophy from my first race ever. I came in second in the 9 and unders. There were only two of us. Your accomplishment is way cooler than mine was!

Princessrunner I'll see you at the Minnie. Wave to me as you blow past, ok? I grew up in NH and agree that you don't want to run that half marathon. Are you in Northern Maine or southern? I grew up in Weare, NH but spent time in Saco as a kid.

It is still amazing to me to see the milage you are all running. Your training runs are long distance goals that I could only dream of in the future. I am inspired - and tired - just reading about it!

Sara: You are sweet but I really am not that fast. I'll probably be running along with you at Minnie. I am in Central Maine, a little dot called Norridgewock, about 1:30 north of Saco....but we love Funtown!!! ;)

Leana - Great time on your 8!! Good luck on the 4 today - I have one question though - how do you run when you have to go back to work?? I know its on your lunch break but then aren't you stinky??? :confused3 (hope that doesn't come out sounding rude - its just that I would like to do that on my break but I don't have anywhere to shower off and the people around me would  if I did that!! LOL)

That's a great question! Unfortunately I don't have a gym membership in our building here so no showering after runs for me. Seeing as how it is relatively cool here luckily I don't sweat too much on a run now, but if I have partner meetings in the afternoon I won't run for everyone else's comfort and enjoyment. If I'm holed up in my office I figure I'm OK!

Also, since our daylight hours are so short now (8 or 8:30 am to 5:30 pm) - if I don't run during the day it is way too dark by the time I would get out the door here now!

Greetings Race Team -

I think they are going to take me out of here in handcuffs today, and not because I enjoy it! This job is going to be the death of me. :headache: I just know it. Stupidity runs rampant here. It never stops!

OK, work-related vent over.

I did 4 miles on Saturday but did it on the TM because it was snowing. Not just a lovely little fluffy snow, but a wet mess. This morning I did 3 miles on the TM, Not because of the snow but because it was 4:30am, and it was dark. ;)

I MUST get outside for my L/R this weekend. I have 7 miles coming up and I'm craving pavement.

I can not possibly respond to all million so posts I have missed but I did read them all. I'll try to keep up from the slammer. :upsidedow

I don't think the EMT's will use handcuffs if your job kills you though. ;) There are other straps on the stretcher to take care of keeping you in one place. :rolleyes1

Do we work at the same place? ;)

How 'bout them Illini?!

Hi! :wave2: I haven't visited the boards since, oh about, early October. I won't go into details, but I am STILL dealing with an on-going injury that developed in July and work has been crazy. I've needed to focus all of my free time on googling my various aches and pains in the hopes of figuring out what exactly is wrong with me. Two doctors, and athletic trainer, and the folks on the runners world forum can't diagnose me. I have an appointment on Monday with a group in town that uses a chiro, massage therapist, and a PT as part of their diagnosis and treatment team. It is going to cost a fortune, but it will be worth it if they can figure out what to do with me.

In other news, I am still sort of training. I am also faithfully watching and voting for Helio on Dancing With the Stars. That's about it, really.

Glad to be back here. I always feel worse when I'm not keeping up with my WISH team!

Thanks everyone for the praise for my race. Looking back on it, I was pushing myself because my mom and DD were watching and I wanted to show off. ;) I'm probably lucky I didn't hurt myself!

Speaking of my mom, she now wants to come to the marathon weekend to watch! :scared1: OK, I have a room at the Swan. She can't stay in our room because that's just too much togetherness. I looked on-line and the Swan is booked. I'm sure she'd like to stay at least in our area.

Then I started to think maybe a Villa would be the way to go (never stayed in one, but the kitchen, W/D idea is appealing). Saratoga Springs is available, I think in 2 bedrooms. It's kind of pricey, but maybe the equivalent of two rooms... there is also a cabin at Fort Wilderness. It is one bedroom (double/bunk beds) and has a murphy bed. I've never stayed there, so I can't tell if that's too much. Anybody got any advice?

The final option is to tell her she's waited too long and to have her come watch a half in December in Jacksonville. Still, I think if DH had my mom with him to help with the kids, I might see them more on the course (not that I really know if I care about seeing them on the course or if I just want to keep plodding along without much distraction).

Flashback!- forgot to tell all of you about the funniest part of my 5k. About two blocks into the race, we're going around a corner. This man in front of me hops on the sidewalk and runs diagonally like he's cutting off the corner. So I'm thinking he's really neurotic about his time if he wanted to cut off those extra few feet! My mom and Emma tell me afterwards that they went to a coffee shop during the race and there was a man in there with a race bib. When my mom asks, he says he just saw the coffee shop and decided he'd run enough for the day! That was the guy! He was hanging out eating bagels at the finish too, so I guess he is a firm believer of the whole DNF is better than DNS thing! How crazy is that!?

It hurts Steve. It really hurts:sad1: . I need a hug.

Great job to everyone that put the big miles in this weekend.

Oh, Poor Mike! Here you go, sweetie! Feel better? How do you think I feel? I sat in the cold Friday evening and Saturday afternoon into evening and didnt' get to see a win!! Well, unless you count my son's drumline, that is! ;)

Thankfully though, my stretching and the orthotics are working on my PF. I have discovered that my arches are so high there is not a shoe that can be found that touches them so I have to use the orthotics to take up the space. I have worn them the last 2 workouts and woke up with zero pain  so that makes me happy and I think my mojo may be returning, my chakras have realigned and my Chi has been rediscovered so all is well in central Maine!! :woohoo:

That's GREAT!!! Thanks for the chuckle!

Kristi -- good luck on calling Chad's boss's bluff! Sending you both pixiedust:

Jen in GA -- Man, you are fast!!!! Can you believe how far you have come and how fast you have become since you started your running efforts? I remember when you first started posting to the weekly thread! I am so happy for you. And how awesome that you have Harry to keep you company. Good thing you are teaching him all those great habits right from the beginning -- body glide on the feeties, etc! :lmao: Congrats on your awesome race result! That time is awesome!

DreamBeliever -- :welcome: It's so nice to have you here!

Cam- I finally started doing some crunches. I've been saying I need to stengthen my core forever now, but not done anything about it. Well, both Sunday and this morning I did 100 situps. I'm going to try to keep up with the Cam 100 crunches challenge.

Jen - the 5k story is great!! I once ran a really hot July 4 5k. There was a man running w/ his little dog and he kept yelling to the dog "don't you quit on me!" The man didn't finish, but the dog looked fine to me!!! I have enjoyed that memory ever since.

Judy - sorry work stinks!!

Cecelia - I love the bite me zone idea!! That is quite an apt description.

Sounds like training is going well for everyone. For those of you training for the full in Jan, where are you w/ your LR distance?

Phil and I did an adventure race this weekend. It was really fun. It, surprisingly, started at midnight and lasted for 17.5 hours. My butt is really sore b/c many of those hours were either on my mt. bike seat or the wooden portage bar of the canoe. We probably did about15-17 miles on foot, 20-30 on bbike and around 14 on the water. I'm pretty tired!! We placed 5th and got some pretty cool prizes. The best was a 6 month supply of coffee from Silver Joe's coffee co. and since phil and I were on the same team, we both got it, so we are set for a year!!!

Got motivated today. Had Vets day off. (God Bless them all)
Did the half (13.1) on a flat (no incline) treadmill in just under 2:28.
Felt OK. Still have 2 months.

I got my 4 mi in in 44:52 for an 11:13/mi pace. Boy...the legs were sluggish. Not sure if it was because I was hungry, or it was so windy, or if it just wasn't one of those days... At least I got the miles in!

Dave -- That makes me feel so motivated to get them going again! I did them right up through the morning we flew to Orlando for ToT (10/26), but have only done a few days since then, since my PT exercises are taking up so much time. I am definitely going to start again, and it's nice to think of my WISH buddy doing them too. :goodvibes

Melissa -- Congratulations on that awesome finish!! :woohoo: I'll tell you, that coffee prize would be supremely motivating to me, but I can't believe what you guys put yourselves through for coffee! :lmao: So, how is the furbaby? And the boy? Hoping all is well there. :)

Erica and I sucessfully completed our 18 mile training walk. We were under 4 and a half hours even without deducting the time spent waiting for stop lights and a potty break.

Good walk and I felt like I could have gone on for a while, but glad to stop anyway. Funny how you rest up just to get tired again. Who's tag line is it "Train to near death, rest, repeat".

Judy, darlin, if I don't get arrested for some of the crap I do at work you should be fine. If God hadn't meant for me to terrorize my co-workers he wouldn't have made them so gullable.

Tired Panda:hippie:

DreamBeliever, glad you are here!

Jen, love the 5k story and Mr. Harry with the Body Glide! Go with the Villa or tell Mom too late.

Mel, you and Phil amaze me that something as this can be done. You rule!

Kristi, PD that it all works out.

Hey! I've not done anything for today yet but thought I'd say I'm not really sore from yesterday. That is good news. I made apt. to get epidural Thursday to make all those "extra" aches and such be gone so I can sleep at night. Going to try to make it to the gym for some Rest. Pool and light upper body stuff.

Hey WISH buddies!

I thought I would just pop in real quick and say HI! I have been MIA due to vacation then trying to get caught up after vacation, and training! O the training! So LTO! and WTO!
So, I have no time to cach up today, but hope to read through soon.

I am still training for Charlotte Thunder Road Marathon on 12/8/07..did another 20.3 miler Friday (the .3 is b/c I was not paying attention and missed the street I was supposed to turn down). Did that in 2:56.36....an 8:40 mile ave....will try to catch up with everyone later!

Judy - After a particularly frustrating conference call/training session last week, I walked into our breakroom and proclaimed "90% of the world is STUPID!" My coworkers looked at me and sheepishly asked if they were in the other 10% or the 90%. I chose not to answer.

Meghan - Welcome back! Annie said to tell you she missed you. We were getting worried. Go Helio! (I was so happy when Sabrina got voted off - leaves my #1 and #2 choices!)

Jen in Ga - Way to go!

Jackie

Geez, I checked in this morning before work and now there are 3 MORE PAGES!!! Sheez, no way for me to catch up properly. Did some xtraining today; 30 min elliptical and then some light weights. Now it's time to feed the troops!

JenGA--That's AWESOME! And like everyone else said, no matter how many people were in your age group, you were FIRST! And you had a rockin' time!

Okay really gotta feed the kidlets!

JenGA

Gret result there. You are in sniffing distance of a sub-8 5K, which I think is 24:50 or so. You have the pace to do it, just a bit of sharpening for maybe 4 weeks would get you there. 1 speed workout a week carrying that pace for 200, 400, 800, or 1600 meters in training would produce a bit more speed on a race day with fresh legs.

I suspect with longer races coming soon you may not be interested in in in the coming months, but tuck it away for future use. Too bad GA is 1000 road miles from our home, or I'd do the speed work with you.

Lily

Your posted your long effort after my last comments, so 1 day late, "great work out there."
