Wk of May 7--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Morning Everyone!! Just wanted to check in and update on my training. Yesterday Michael woke up and his fever was gone, thankfully. I decided not to take him to the gym though. So I did my "The FIRM" body sculpting DVD. Can you say "OUCH!!". That's how I felt afterwards. Upper, Lower, and Abs. So, I knew that I had to get out and run this morning even if I didn't want to, because if I didn't I wouldn't be able to walk tomorrow. Unfortunately, Michael's fever came back a little bit last night and he wasn't feeling great this morning even though the fever had once again disappeared. So, I put both of the boys in the double jogging stroller. WE're talking 25 lbs stroller, 50 lb 5yr old, and 30-35 lb 18month old. I was pushing about 100 lbs while running 2 miles. To say the least I have sufficiently stretched my arms, and legs out during this workout. I feel much better now though, and succeeded in a 21:15 for my 2 miles this morning!! Not too bad!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful morning and I can't wait to hear how everyone else is.

Sara - I loved your race report! It sounds like you guys had such a good time. I have only stayed at the Peabody in Memphis and it was nice. (any hotel seems nicer when it is just the 2 of us :rotfl: )
Coming out of lurkerdom on this thread to say a big :) thanks. The Peabody was just what we were looking for and I certainly hear you about it being nicer when you're sans kids :rotfl2: We really did have a great time and the best part is DH's post-race high that he always gets from exceeding his expectations. I think he is inspired to actually begin training for the DL 1/2. I can't ask for more than that :cool1: Have fun with the new bike!!

Colleen - I am waiting for a report from your 1/2!!

Sunny - Good luck on your tri!!

Judy - :wizard:

LLP - sending lots of baby-making :wizard: your way. So glad to "see" you again. Yeah on the DL 1/2!!!

Best of luck to everyone on meeting goals this week.

Dave - You can always pace that distance off w/ your car or bike computer. Obviously, if your route was longer, your pace was faster! You probably were going harder and faster than the garmin said. How did your shins do w/ the hills?
Hi MelR :wave2: My shins have been feeling a lot better. Maybe I'm getting over the hump with my shin splints. I still think some new shoes will help me, but they have not been so bad. Thanks for asking.

Hello everyone. :wave2:

Nothing to report as Wed is a rest day.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts about Justin. His parents are having a memorial service on Saturday.

Anybody seen Cam??? :confused3

They have put up signs all over town that say "Memorial Day Races, May 29th". Everytime I drive by one I get so excited! :yay: I can't wait!

Just wanted to let y'all know that I got an email survey on the Minnie Marathon. I mentioned the lack of porta potties and that I thought the 15K course was better than the half since it included more theme park time. And I thought y'all would be interested in one of the last questions...they asked if there were a women's half marathon at WDW, would I be likely to participate?
I said YES :thumbsup2

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to pop in to say a quick hello.

Judy -- I am so sorry about Justin. My thoughts and prayers are with you and with his family.

Liz -- Thank you SOOOOO much for all your supportive and encouraging phone calls over the weekend and to share the excitement. :grouphug:

I am going to do a Minnie race report but just haven't had time yet. The weekend was awesome -- Rhonda and I had such a great time and the highlights were definitely hanging out with other WISHers and walking away with Minnie medals. Of course, we also did our fair share of hanging out at Adventurers' Club and Comedy Warehouse, sampling some adult beverages, eating at some awesome restaurants, and shopping till we dropped!

As for the race -- I, like so many, wasted 1/2 hour at the portopotties pre-race and sacrificed all my stretching time. We got there by 5:30 and I stretched for about 10 minutes before getting in line (BIG mistake -- there were NO lines when we got there, and 10 minutes later it was a mob scene). It definitely had the absolute worst impact on my hip. Within the first couple of miles I had discomfort which quickly turned to pain and the tears in my eyes at MGM were not sentimental. Thank God that Rhonda kept encouraging me and checking our pace. We ran before and past every mile marker and across the start and finish lines. It was an awesome experience.

I received the same survey Mel did and mentioned the unsatisfactory race shirts (black singlets for a women's race in May?), unavailability of race clothing in anything larger than a size large (which ran very small), and too few portapotties at the start and throughout the course.

I will post a report soon and am hoping to have a lot more to post here about training to train for DL. I have that very intimidating 5 miler on 5/27 and am going to really work on my hamstring/hip between now and then.

Keep up the great work, everyone! I loved reading about Krista's Flying Pig and Dave's 3.14 miles (Dave-- sounds to me like it was longer than that! Dratted Garmin! :teeth: )

Judy :grouphug:

Dana... :wizard: for your little one.

Rachael...great pace!

I'm still on rest after the Minnie. Apparently woke up the PF in my R foot, though I'm starting to think the heels I wear at work may be at least partly responsible.

Ok y'all...so what do I do next? I have no more races scheduled until WDW half. I'll probably double up the training schedule like I did last year, but that won't need to start until August. What should I do in the meantime? I'm thinking about working on increasing running time so that I can train to run the half instead of intervals. Anyone with any suggestions on the best way to do this?

I feel like I haven't really been around here in awhile...how's everyone doin'?

Hi Wishers....

Krista.....WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH AI???!!!!! :furious: I can't believe they voted Chris off. My DD is fuming LOL....she turned off the TV and stomped away saying she's never watching AI again. But I have to agree....this one's a stumper to me?! Different strokes for different folks though! Should be interesting now...I thought Chris was a true star from day one. I just don't see that spark in any of the rest? Hmmmmmm

Mel....I don't have too much advice for switching from run/walk to all run, except maybe just keep increasing your run:walk ratio until you're running primarily. Or maybe go for 10:1 run:walk so at least you give your legs a break. Pixie Dust for the PF too....mine sort of disappeared. I think the culprit was my trail running sneakers. So now they just sit in the closet and I'm trail running on my Asics Kayanos...guess I'll be replacing them more frequently :confused3 . Thanks so much for sharing your pics of the Minnie! I'd love to do it next year!!!

Cam....How is your hip feeling? Is that a recurring injury? Your pace sounded good....I'm sorry to hear you were in pain :grouphug: .

Dana....PIXIE DUST to your little guy who's sick :(. Sooo much is still going around here!

Rachel....Super pace!!! WTG :goodvibes

Dave....I'm worried about buying the Garmin. I promised myself that I'd get one when I hit the 5 Mile distance. Well...that was a few weeks ago now but I still haven't ordered it. I live in a very rural area and run in wooded areas....sometimes on trails and sometimes on streets with LARGE trees. Now that the foliage is in I'm afraid I'll get minimal signal. We couldn't even get satellite TV on the top of our house....zero signal....and that is from the roof!!! So I'm just not sure. Anyway....sounds like your Garmin wigged a little but overall it sounds great! Also glad to hear your shins are doing well!!!

As for me....still running although I had to take a day off and missed one run this week. I've been dealing with recurrent hip soreness for a while now. I am beginning to rethink my marathon plan. I may try to stick to a more rigid run:walk interval to give my legs the needed break, I was originally planning to run the full with walk breaks only at the water stops. I'm hoping that if I take more frequent walk breaks I will alleviate some of the hip issues I've been experiencing! I really just need to stop focusing on my pace and speed so much...I kind of got caught up in the idea of getting fast and forgot that it might not be in my body's best interest. I also feel like I've been overtraining a bit and I'm not even into full marathon training yet! I've had recurrent leg aching sometimes at night and of course the hip tenderness....all in all both my Dad (who is an athletic wealth of knowledge) and my KBX Instructor said I might want to step down to 5 day a week schedule now for a while to give my muscles more time to recover :confused3 . I don't know....I think they may be right. I guess I'll see if that makes a difference....along with sticking to shorter intervals!

Hey everyone! :wave2: It's so late I only had a chance to skim the last couple days, but I will catch up tomorrow! :thumbsup2

We're getting ready to head back to Disney on Friday for the Danskin Triathlon... :scared1: I'm so excited and nervous!!!! I had my last tri swim session this morning and everything went well. Tomorrow I have my last individual swim lesson, then a light bike probably Friday morning before we head over. Yea!!! It is also DS's birthday, so we have some special things planned for him while we are there. :goodvibes

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but just FYI - Since we had started talking about the Race for the Taste on another thread, I wanted to double check on the Race for the Cure date/location. If anyone is interested, this was on the Komen Central Florida site...

It is a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, and it honors breast cancer survivors, and the memory of those that did not survive. It is so awesome and humbling to see all the ladies and men in the pink survivor shirts that have dealt with this disease, and have won. The next day is the Race for the Taste 10K. DH and I did both races last year - what a great weekend! We'll be there again this year if anyone wants to come. We could do another WISH meet! (and I will be on time for this one) :teeth:

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Whew, tough run yesterday because it was HOT! Legs felt good - I just needed some water. My DW took me to the start of the 10k I'm running and I ran from there to my house (which is on the course). It was 3.87 miles in 38:56 min (10:04 mpm). I would have run to the end of the street to get an even 4 miles but I needed something to drink bad... My shins felt OK, and I iced them afterwards. It was great to get a feel for the course I'm going to run in a couple weeks. The start is beautiful. It's in a park filled with literally 100s of lilac bushes (the race is the Lilac Festival 10k). The air is filled with the fragrance of lilac. It is pretty incredible.

Amy- I have to say that I do love my Garmin. That is the first time that it lost the GPS signal during a run - so it doesn't happen reguarly. I love knowing how far I've run, and that I can jump on any course I don't know and have some idea of how far I've run and what my pace is. I've been really happy with it.

As far as your training schedule goes - it does sound like cutting back a little on the training might be good for you. I read that hip pain is a sign of overtraining or doing too much too fast. To be honest, if I were you, I don't know that I would decide on a plan for the marathon yet. Like so many have said before, we're training to train right now. When I get closer to 20 weeks out from the marathon I'll really decide on what my running or run/walk plan is that I will train for (of course I still haven't signed up for the marathon yet ;)). Even then, during the 20 weeks of training for the marathon the plan may change.

Amy--I am so mad, I could cuss!!!!! (I can count on one hand the number of dirty words I've said in my life) :furious: :furious: I tried for 2 hours to vote for Chris on Tuesday night and I kept getting a busy signal. I'm done with American Idol, I'm not watching it anymore. Between dropping off Hines at the kennel for 10 days and Chris getting voted out, I had a rough night! It's a good thing we're going to WDW tonight, that will make me feel better. :teeth:

Lynnda--Good luck this weekend!! :wizard: I'll be thinking of you when I ride on the monorail and pass Bay Lake! Thanks for info on the Race for the Cure 5K, Stephen and I are going to be in WDW then, we actually fly out on Sunday 10/8. We were both wanting to do the 10K, but we didn't want to run and not have a place to get cleaned up before we fly out, since we'll already be checked out of our resort. With the 5K being on Saturday, we could easily do that and running through Animal Kingdom in October will be great practice for the full marathon.

Judy--I meant to tell you earlier :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: . I am so sorry for your loss.

Jodi--Good luck on your 5K on Saturday! :wizard:

I'm going to get to work, I'm trying to find loads of things to do to make the day go by faster. Stephen dropped me off this morning at my work and then went to his, when he picks me up at 5:00, we're going straight to the airport, our flight leaves at 8:40.   I doubt I'll be back in today, other than to check in, but everyone have a great week and weekend. Talk to you on Wednesday!!

GREAT pictures Krista!!! You guys all look like you were having fun!!!! :cool1:

Just noticed this on the Disney Site:

Registration Update...Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge has reached more than 50% of the Registration Capacity

I didn't see it posted here anywhere so I thought I would put it on here just in case.

Gosh I hate having to do these drive-by posts. Darn work keeps interupting my Dis-ing!

Had a good training session this morning. I'm adding some running at the end of my 45 min on the TM, so not only and I adding speed but also some extra time. :thumbsup2

OK back to work. Ugh. :surfweb:

Judy

Good morning! :sunny:

Race report is up. Thanks to all of you, I did not get swept and even had a good time! Official time was 2:20 and chip time was 2:19 for a pace of 14:58! Learned from the CCC and did not weave as much. Didn't need to though, as there were only about 2000 at the start. FYI, there were 1489 finishers with the last place pace at 15:55. There were 4 women between 70 and 78 who finished..ALL ahead of me!!!The fastest had a 13:15 pace!!

Once in the AKL room after the race, DH took his shoe off to discover a bloody sock. Peeled the sock off to find he had broken a quarter size blister and rubbed it raw. He had a few more blisters along with his knee swollen 3x the regular size. His days of going up and down steel decks on the Navy ships have left him in need of knee replacement surgery..but he won't do it! I had only 2 teeny blisters, but the ball of one foot was swollen big time. Got in to see a podiatrist yesterday. After taking xrays, he says that my big toe is shorter than my 2nd and 3rd toe and doesn't bend the way it should. Therefore, the 2nd toe takes most of the stress of walking. Now the bone is bruised. :confused3 So, it's no walking training for me for 2 weeks. No pool to swim in, so I'll be working on upper body strength and abs! :) Our first badges of honor!

Nancy, hope your feet have recovered by now!
MelR, Wow! You did a 9 mile bike trail..in the rain..with a turned ankle..
Scott, GREAT 2nd 5K! Keep it up!!
Carrie, YEAH :cheer2: negative splits! We're such aliens.."just a four miler!" :rotfl2:
Sara, a 12 minute pace..WOW!!
Jackie, Wonderful time for you 5K!! We were at the PR+R concert Saturday night! :wave2:
Lynne. awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!! You do an easy 15K, fly home, take exams and pass them, and then sign up for a half marathon this weekend!!! :worship:
Erin, it was so great meeting you!! Thanks for giving up your sleep time on Saturday. Thanks again for being there Sunday morning at the finish!!
Dena, so PROUD of you!!! :thumbsup2 What's that you said? Your nemisis was volunteering NOT running???? I always enjoy your pictures!
Goofyguy sorry about your upset stomach..but you were still :smokin: !
Krists your pictures look great!
Christy, so glad that you made the Minnie AND the anniversary celebration!
Jen, CONGRATULATIONS on completing your first 5K!! A 12.5 minute mile...WOW!!
Colleen, how was your marathon?
Amy, great job on your 5 miler! After reading your delimma with the satellite signal, I would be hesitant about the Garmin, also. There are other pace watches that are not GPS. Nike has some.
Dave, time for a fuel belt for training! My DH won't wear one during a race. He says there are enough water stops. But when you are training..you are going to need some water! More stuff for our free sport. Great job signing up for the 10K!!
CJ, You DID it! A mini marathon!! Welcome to the WDW WISH team!!
Judy, really hope this is a better week for you. Congratulations on signing up for your race!! You are sooooo ready for it!!
Mel/Chimera, So glad I met you at the start because I never would have seen you during the race!! Congrats for DD, too!
Lynnda, what a great time for your race! So sorry that we didn't get to meet up at EoS! We were looking forward to tellng you in person how great your design was!

On to the next event! party:

If you don't need a system for navigation, but just for measuring your speed and distance, you could use the Nike Triax. It uses an inertial sensor which is tied into your shoelaces to measure your speed and distance. It is dipsplayed and stored on a wristwatch. It's also available in combination with a heartratemonitor. There is no satellite involved and it even works on a treadmill. According to tests I read in German running magazines it is as precise as the GPS based systems.

Just checking in - I feel so lost without the Minnie to count down to! Tried running a couple of days ago - shins hurt again just like they did before. Now someone please explain to me how the Disney magic can erase the pain enough that I can run 3 miles there without ANY pain but can't run a mile at home without it hurting?

And why did the race photographer get in front of my daughter so her picture of me at the finish line is of his back, but his picture of me didn't make it to the website?

Jackie

Jodi--Good luck on your 5K on Saturday!

Thanks Krista -- I'm actually a little bit nervous and it doesn't have much to do with the weather.....just my sense of direction :goodvibes that and I would have liked to have trained more for it, so I'm below 30 minutes - oh well you can't push it, can you :confused3

My feet are well on their way back to normal now. Thanks to everyone for asking.

Jackie, we did not make it to Epcot on Sat. DH and I both decided we'd had enough fun for the day! We did make it back down to see PR & the R on Mon. Still a painful walk for me then, but it did feel good to stretch my legs and walk again. Took a trip to Epcot to get me motivated though!

I do believe I have created a monster in my DH. Thus far, he has accompanied me on my race ventures simply because he wanted to support me. Yep, he's a sweetie! I finally convinced him to go at his own pace for the Minnie 5K, and now he is hooked! On our way to Epcot on Mon he started asking me when our next race will be, and saying he wants to get some better running shoes! Before it was always more like "oh, no, we're not doing that again!" when I mentioned a race. Now, he can hardly wait for the next race! I guess that's a good thing! Next, I have to convince him to hydrate properly, and maybe even come here and post himself!

I would love to get a survey from Disney about the 5K! I'd start with the mess up with the shirt distribution. We still do not have ours yet due to the mix-up with volunteers giving out 2 shirts PP on race day, then I hear that the 15K runners got theirs with their goody bags??? I am really disappointed to still not have my shirt. Obviously I do not do delayed gratification well.
