Wk of May 6--WISH Walking/Running Club

OK, so I'm having a few random misc thoughts...

First off, One More Mile is discontinuing their "13.1/26.2 miles to the next rest stop" slogan t-shirts as of May 21. You can get those shirts at a discount, but after that the slogan is gone. I just ordered a short sleeve 13.1 and a long sleeve 26.2.

I skimmed the end of last week's post and I noticed a few comments about the ban on mp3 players at road races. I really agree that I think the bigger hazard are folks that might get into trouble in traffic. I used to run with an mp3 player, but the first time I hit the pathways in Calgary I noticed that I wasn't as aware of the cyclists zooming around me so I've stopped training with music. Although I can't get through a track run or a TM run without music - that's the only exception.
At the 5K race this weekend I really noticed that people were too tuned into their music to be aware of the racing situation. The course was a pretty narrow one as we wound through one of the golf courses near DTD. There were several clumps of folks and as I tried to squeeze through them and let them know I was "on their left" they never heard me.

AI this week was really boring... I like old Bee Gees tunes (OK, I admitted it in a public forum), but with the exception of Jordin's first song no one really hit it out of the park. I agree, I think it was LaKisha's time to go. I really like Blake, but he wasn't wonderful this week, I'd be suprised if he made it into the top 2. I'd really like to see Jordin win since she seems to have grown so much from the beginning.

OK, time to get back to work!

Krista and Steve- I just wanted to WISH you safe travels, and I hope you have a great week in WDW. How are your legs?

I have been trying to decide if I should do this half or not ... is it going to be hilly?

There will probably be a couple of slight inclines, but no real hills. I need to go drive the course, but from reading the description it looks like it's mostly downtown (where I've run all of my 5K's). I've never done any real hill training, and I haven't had any problem. Come join us!

My mom completed her first ever 5K finishing in 52:00 which she was ecstatic about. We ran as a mother/daughter team so when you combine our times we placed 31 out of 62 for the team.

That's great, I was wondering how she did! I met her at the start of the 5K! It was neat that she flew in from Jakarta to race with you.

Hey all! Just back from our "mock 5K" last Women Can Run Clinic. Tonight there were ladies from 3 or 4 other clinics running/walking. They had an "official timer" and an actual water stop. So, guess how I did???? 25:01 5K!!!Here's me:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: I was also, actually the first clinic participant to finish! My leader finished before me--but she doesn't really count;) So, I think I"m good to go for Saturday. Hopefully there won't be super fast women from other clinics at the race--want to bring home an award! Anyway, we got a graduation certificate when we finished and I'm gonna post some of what it said--very fitting for our team!

"Round and round the track. Pain in my feet runs up to my back. Gasp and wheeze, and huff and hiss...Tell me again why we're doing this??

It looks so easy as they flash by. The picture of health, a gleam in their eye. Big ones, small ones, the young and the old...Anyone can run, or so I've been told.

So many runners will compete for first prize. That big shiny trophy reflected in their eyes. But I run uncontested in my own personal race. For I've decided that I'm guaranteed to win the last place.

I think of the valleys of discouragement I've hit. The times I've wanted to just give up and quit.....

And through the frustration, the tears and the pain. Above all this the lesson I've gained. It doesn't really matter if I'm first or last place. The thing that's important is that I finish the race!":thumbsup2

Night to all my WISH teammates!

ETA: check out my new siggie pic! Also, check out ASI lost and found--love the WISH group pic at the start!

Cam...congratulations on the good news from your appointment!

Stephanie...that's a really cool poem from your certificate! Congratulations on your 5K!

I have been trying to decide if I should do this half or not ... is it going to be hilly?

I saw the course map and the first half (13.1) is relatively flat. It goes from the fairgrounds past Meredithe College and NCSU to the Capital bldg and then back again.....pretty much all city streets. The second half is rated as being more difficult as it goes into Umstead Park. It is a hillier terrain and some of it is gravel rather than paved. It looks like the first 11 miles or so follow the exact same course and then the full branches out somewhere around mile 11 or 12.

Nancy: if you decide to do this, you can always stay with us!

HMHUnters: I responded to you before I saw Jackie's map.....I'll be darned if I know how to read one of those!

AHHH, UMSTEAD PARK! Isn't this where the Umstead ultra is run?

There will probably be a couple of slight inclines, but no real hills.

O.K. Jackie - I'm no cartographer, but I'd call a few of those humpty-dumpties on the map you posted "real" hills.

Stephanie - Great time for the 5k! Good luck on Saturday's race.

Christa - When are you running your 5k? I didn't miss it did I?

Dona - One more welcome. Good luck with all the clandestine training. That will be harder than the actual race.

Cam - Congratulations on your happy heart!! I recall your post a couple of months ago about a doc that had no clue about you and how far you had come (I thought us villagers were going to have to storm the castle and give him a head-out-of-butt-ectomy). It's so great that you got the right guy saying the right things this time.

I really really really wanted to break two hours, but well, at about mile 8.5 I started to get very tired I couldn't figure out why. I thought maybe it was that I hadn't slept so well. But yesterday I got a "visitor", big time. Sooo, that explains it. :rolleyes1 (Sorry, gentlemen, but you've got to be used to this sort of talk by now.)
Judy - Welcome back. No problem with the above comment. My sister and her family "visited" us a couple of weeks ago. I was also very tired when they arrived, what with all the cleaning and such.

BTW, we also ate bunch of watermelon and I was very BLOATED. I think I gained a few pounds, but it was all WATER WEIGHT. Then I went swimming too soon and had CRAMPS. Man, did that make me CRANKY! It was a little better when DD3 found her missing Barbie and shouted MI-DOL!! (sp?).

Alright, where were we?

DD6 insisted on taking DW's Minnie medal and my medal to school Tuesday to show off. She was given strict instructions on proper handling of such treasures. DW picked her up at the bus stop and she had both medals draped around her neck and a grin from ear to ear. I think she's proud of her folks!

I did my first post-marathon run last evening. I needed to remind myself that it's better to run than not (because "not" seemed like a better option for the last 5 or 6 miles on Sunday). I left the Garmin at home so I didn't hear it whispering "Just a little faster, come on, you know you want to" and did somewhere around 3 miles. All systems seem to be functioning as they should. Now I just have to figure out what comes next.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I did a short run last night while DD6 princess: was at girl scouts. I walked 5 min at the start, ran about 2.5 miles, and then walked another 5 min. My legs felt OK, not great but not too bad, and I spent a lot of time stretching.

Good morning everyone! It's a beautiful day today at Mickey's house.

Just a quick drive through.

Cam - Glad to hear the great news!

Everyone - Take care and have a great weekend.

Now, it's time for breakfast and then off to Epcot.

:)

Vic - GLad you're having a good time. I've been heraring bad stuff about the smoke frm the fires. Hope it's not too bad for you!

Krista & Steve - Have a wonderful trip!!!

Does someone wnat to tell me how I cn do 9.3 at WDW adn not have my leg be too bad afterward, but 30 minutes at home darn near killed me. Still waiting to hear on those othodics I was supposed to get this week. Mext week is the osteo manipulator. Let's hope something works.

As for ASI pics. I crossed the line alone, high 5'd Mickey as Minnie was blowing kisses at me. Where are the photos of that????????? Oh, and where are the expo pics? Martha and I did before and afters. The WISH team pics are awesome, though.

Jackie & Jeanne - I'll have to think about this ... it's the week after the ToT 13K which I'm hoping to do. That topography map looks relatively hilly! (I really hate hills which is one of the reasons I like running at WDW!) I'll have to drive the course.

I did a quick bike work out and weights this a.m. and now I'm off for a nine hour drive to celebrate my grandma's 102nd birthday. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good morning!

Leana- I actually have some Bee Gees music on my ipod for training so I share your shame. :upsidedow

Stephanie- Congratulations on your run time! Loved the poem and your picture!

Big Vic- Have a great time!

Mike- :rotfl2:

Hoping to get in 3-4 miles this afternoon at the park.

Have a great day.
Kiena

I did nothing but hit the snooze alarm four times this morning. :rolleyes1 Tomorrow is a 5 mile L/R, then I'll be back on track, so to speak.

Geez, why didn't anyone tell me I looked like an over inflated cartoon tire in my racing outfit? My Minnie pictures are not pretty. However, I would like to point out one thing...

In the picture of me in MGM I am suspended, which I do believe means that technically I AM RUNNING! Not wogging, jogging or walking fast...actually RUNNING! :woohoo: Whooo hooo! :thumbsup2

Jackie - You can tell we have been training "together". Did you see my time for the Minnie? We would have finished at pretty much the same time. :woohoo:

Kristi - Oh my, but you are a VERY funny girl! :rotfl:

Mike
- OMG Mike! I can NOT read your posts with a mouth full of Cliff Bar! They almost had to call the paramedics for me again! :rotfl2: You are too too funny! :lmao:

Carrie
- Yeah...where are all the finish line pictures? :confused3 Well, we KNOW what mine will look like. Grrrrr. :headache:
