Wk of May 28--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Mel - The bridge actually goes from mackinaw City to teh upper peninsula. The sun in the sunrise pic is about wher ethe island is. Wow, can't eblieve you remebred where teh movie was. Hwoever, there is no bridge to teh island, as motor vehicles are prohibited. They've only allowed them on teh island once. You guessed it, for the filming. Glad you';re having such a great time! Oh, I hope my stay in a 2BR in January does not spoil me too much!

Dena - Love the pics! You look MAHHHHH-VA-LOIUS! :teeth:

Carrie - LOVE THE RACE REPORT!

I just love hearing about everyone's adventures! I am not signed up for anything right now so I am living through you guys and girls who are racing! :thumbsup2
I did nothing yesterday...just did not make time. Will be going around 10 miles tomorrow so will either swim or bike today. Having the DD's home for summer break is really messing up my workout schedule. :goodvibes

Melissa - is your race this weekend? :wizard: :wizard: to you!

Eric and Dave - :wizard: :wizard: on your races tonight! Look forward to hearing about them. So post ASAP! :teeth:

To everyone running in the HEAT! I feel your pain...I need to get up and be running by 0600 to get in a good run and I have not done that yet!

Cam - for your race! It looks like you did great!

Oh - Bree is looking so cute preg! B/C of her slackness of not posting, :lmao: I will try to remember to take my camra tomorrow so I can take a pic of her. I always walk a few miles with her after my LR.

Hello everyone. A rest day for me today. I noticed that I am not sore anymore. My knees stopped complaining and my left ankle doesn't hurt. This is good thing. :teeth:

Dena - OMG what a sweetheart he is! :cloud9: And WOW! You look FAB-U-LOUS! :thumbsup2

Nancy - Ohh thank you! I had a blast and can't wait to do the next race.

Colleen - Yes, I am a "bad" influence, aren't I? :rotfl: I'm proud of DH! But you know, he's going to be leaving me in the dust. He's so athletic....

Dave and Eric......waiting on those race reports.... :rolleyes1

Judy

:sad2: There won't be a race report from me: I caught a mother of a cold and had to stay home today due to a light fever - so no running for me :furious:
But DW will run and I can post her experience.

Dave, we wish you luck, fair weather and a great race

Oh no Erik! There going to eb too many people to have fun, anyway, though. ;) ;) That's terrible!!!!!!! Good luck to yuor dw, though!

Good luck Dave!! :cheer2:

Yikes!!! Belated Happy Birthday Lily!!!!!! Glad you had a great place to enjoy it! Thansk for the report!

Hi Team!

Just in case you were wondering.....there are 108 days until the DL Inaugural half, 219 days until the WDW half, and 220 days until the WDW full. Yikes!! I'd better get walking!!

Anja (that's DW) just called on her cell after crossing the finish line: She did the race in 28 minutes, which translates to 8 minutes per mile. It's not as good as her time last year (25:40), but traffic was horrible and the temps were only 9°/48°F opposed to last year's higher temps.

Can you keep that DL half info on it's own thread please! ;) ;) ;) (Sorry, that little green jealousy monster keeps getting the best of me!) I want a castle medal too! :guilty: lol

Woo hoo for Anja! :cheer2:

Mel- We don't do the geocaching yet. Phil and I both have garmin rino's (gps w/ 2 way radio) that we use to set out navigation courses but the controls (the points we are looking for) are to be found using only a map and compass. We'll have to bring the rino's out when we come back to WDW to do the geocaching stuff. You could probably do it w/ a map and compass. You could get the coordinates from a web site, use your garmin to mark you current location and then maybe pace count and set a compass heading to find it????? Not sure if that would actually work.

Christa - the xterra is next weekend. I rode the bike trails today. The cutoff for the bike is 3hrs and I did all in 2:18 which included my stops so I'm a little more relaxed about it now. There is no way i'll be able to run the trun part though b/c the climbs are so steep and it is all trail. I'll be doing a lot of walking!

Today was a crazy ride! On the first trail, I was millimeters away from a HUGE TIMBER RATTLER!! It is only the 3rd one I've ever seen. (that's about 3 too many!) Then EC tried to do this really steep downhill and went right into a tree! I've never seen the human body wrap around a tree at that speed. It was a really crazy fall. She was fine, but she is going to be really sore!! I thought about telling her she needs a feather on her handlebars too. It might have given her enough lift to miss the tree.

We road the xterra course today. I did all the trails well w/in the bike cutoff. We didn't officially swim or run, but we did dip in the lake. It is going to be a disgusting swim as we were way out and could still feel the grass touching our feet! I still have to attach the feather. I don't want to look like a little bird though (nothing that will attract a hungry poisionous snake!)

Checking in:

I truly find it impossible to keep up with all of you both on the computer and in life! Everyone seems to be making great strides in their workouts. It is pretty awesome to read about Dave, Judy, and Jodi! I can't believe how much you have done!

I am struggling through Physical therapy for my hip/hamstring pain. Basically even walking will sometimes cause pain. I am periodically going for short walks - although, I did get 4 miles on the treadmill last weekend. I realize that when I started, I did too much too soon.

I love my bike trailer/stroller! It pushes like a breeze!

Dena, I understand what you are going through. I am the first to admit I have blown off alot of workouts. If my day gets busy, it is the first thing to go. It just doesn't always remain my priority - especially with the pain I am having.

Fellow moms - it is our job to feel guilty. I just finished school a year ago, work part time and am thinking about furthering my degree. Balance is hard. Having both a 15 year old and a 2 year old, I realize it doesn't get easier! :rotfl2: Hang in there ladies I am sure you are all GREAT moms! With or without the million dollar bday parties!

Off to go make dinner!

All I can say is DUDE! :hippie: That is crazy! I also HATE it when the grass touches my feet...that happened on my lake swim last weekend...I think it was a tree branch, but it totally FREAKED ME OUT! YOU SAW A SNAKE! :scared1:

Swam at the YMCA indoor pool today. Did another mile. I then got the DDs in and we all swam. I had a noodle and had DD5 on my back doing laps(so much easier) but then the lifeguard told me the noodles were only for swim workouts. WHAT DID SHE THINK I WAS DOING!?!?!?!?!? :furious: There was another woman in the pool with a noodle just "swim floating" really slow. I thought...I am working out WAY more than her! But the teenage LG didn't think so.... :furious:
She doesn't know I am the EVIL QUEEN! :smokin:

Are you all just loving the new smilies like I am?!?! Here's my favorite: :laundy:

Dena - You look GREAT! You should be so proud of how much you've accomplished, and even prouder of your DH for doing that for you. How wonderful that he's aware that you're having doubts and knows just what to do!

Nancy - Good for you for deciding to get new shoes. The guys at the New Balance store told me I needed running shoes even if I was just walking, so maybe this will really help.

Dave - Can't wait for your race report!

Colleen - It's supposed to cool off a little this weekend - hooray! I'm sitting here watching the thermometer drop now - it's almost cool enough to go out and run, but DD cooked dinner and now I'm feeling lazy.

Mel - I'm so jealous reading about your running at WDW! I want to be where you are!

Eric - Sorry you're sick - was so excited to read your account of the race and so disappointed to find out we wouldn't get one! Your wife has big shoes to fill to give us all the details! Congratulations on her time, though - sounds like she did well considering the crowd and the weather.

Temp's down to 81. I'm going to give it a try!

Jackie

Tuesday I got the okay to start walking and exsercising again. Wednesday, I got put back in PT. It seems with all my time on Long Island last year, I didn't properly rehab my shoulder after having the bicep tendon repaired. I am going back into therapy to stregthen and gain range of motion. Hopefully, that will eliminate the pain.

Monday, Lynne and I walked 3 miles around the lake at Beaver Lakes nature center. We took it slow, about 17 min mile, and my foot didn't hurt. Tues we went to Green Lakes State Park and I walked 3 miles while she ran 5. My foot felt fine until I came to a steep downhill. I thought the walk had undone 5 months of rehab. I iced the foot after getting home and it felt fine the next day. I took yesterday off to rest. I have decided I need to listen to my body and rest occationally instead of approaching training like a bull in a china shop.

Tonight, I walked for 27 min and covered 1.56 miles. My pace was only 17 min/mile but I would rather work on endurance instead of speed. I have to force myself to take it slow and build up gradually (unlike the first 2 walks).

I am going to see how walking goes before trying to walk/run. I also need to decide which race to do in January. I am undedcided between redoing the half to better my time or doing the full to get Mickey.

Everyone is doing a great job with their training. I am thinking about signing up for the Women's 5K in August to see how I am doing. Lynne thinks their will be a half in Watertown this fall I may try also.

Have a good weekend training.

Have to pop back in to report that I actually ran 3 miles in 37 minutes - first real run with the Garmin, and everyone is so right! I LOVE it - it makes such a difference to actually know how far I ran instead of having to guess, and it motivated me to keep going just to see the pace improve. The heat wasn't so bad after all... now I HAVE to go to bed after being up with a sick dog last night.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Oooooh, new smilies... :dogdance:
OK, I had a great run last night. It was the best I felt for a while. Had the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge last night at 7:00p. There were ~9,400 runners at the RIT campus at Rochester. My team, the University of Rochester, had the largest team @ 285 runners. Eric, there was a lot of mention of the Frankfurt race at the start of ours, and how you had ~63,000 runners for the largest race in the world. Great job by your DW, BTW. OK, I finished in 34:53 min, my Garmin clocked the course 3.64 miles for 9:35 mpm pace!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Whoo hooo, I ran sub 10 min miles for the whole thing. I wasn't even trying to. I kept telling myself that I was just treating it as a training run. Because I have another 5K on Sunday that my Saturday running group has been training for. That's the race I was really shooting for. The race last night felt really easy. I walked at the first water stop to get a drink, but that was it. I just chugged along, my breathing felt really, really easy, and my legs felt alright too. I was a little worried about my shins because I had some soreness before the start. But they felt OK during the run, and I iced them when I got home.

So from January to now I've gone from the couch to sub 10 min miles of steady running. Whoo hooo!!! :thumbsup2

OK, time to catch up with everyone:

OK, that is just crazy, but it sounds like your riding is really coming along Mel. I haven't heard about any falls lately.

Maggie- Thanks for checking in. I'm really sorry to hear about your hip and hamstring pain. Ever since I've started running I've been struggling with shin and hip pain. Although, my hip pain went away as soon as I put on my new shoes. Hang in there, keep putting your steps in, listen to your body, and just do what you can do. Here's PD :tinker: :tinker: for your leg pain. I hope it helps.

I also wanted to add that we Dads feel guilty too. With both parents working I think my DW and I both feel that we aren't measuring up to the other parents. Oh well, we just do what we do. We let the princesses princess: princess: pick what they wanted to do for their birthday. Without hesitation DD5 princess: picked Chuck E Cheese, and she had an absolutely great time!

Christa- you should challenge that teeny-bopper LG to a run or TRI with you. Show her to mess with the Evil Queen!!!

Dena- I wanted to chime in that your pictures look great too. Good for you, and what a great husband you have to inspire you and motivate you like that. Stitch in your side... ha...

Jackie- Great to hear from you. How did your run go? Any pain?

Dena-how sweet & thoughtful of your DH :flower3: (and I'm lovin the new smiles too) You look great!

Dave-you have come such a long way & are doing great :thumbsup2 I remember when you first joined & had so many doubts & didnt even want to mention the marathon to DW. There's no way she cant see how committed you are now :dumbo: (or as people IRL think, that we "need to be" committed :confused3 )

Christa-wow , you are doing great with the swimming. It's funny how lifeguards "change" the rules for how they feel like using them. I'd like to see any one of them swim a mile & then do more laps with an extra 45lbs on their back :sad2:

Kathy-glad you're able to get back to some walking. Take it easy & dont push too hard & get re-injured.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting much lately. I guess I've gotten into a funk since my training plan has gone caput. I've been lurking & keeping up with everyone though. Oh, and did I mention I leave for WDW in 6 days :drive: I can't wait (although the oppressive heat , I'm not looking forward to) So I've also been doing alot of planning for that trip & I have to go full swing into VBS when I get back. (I'm one of the directors & we have around 800 kids attend)

I think I've decided to start going to WW meetings. I may even start before we leave town so I dont totally blow it out of the water while I'm gone. I found a place near me with meetings that alot of the moms at DS school goes too. Summer is hard for me to stick to a routine & that's what I need to stay OP. I also have to figure out how to get in my runs with DS's home from school & DH working. DL is coming up fast. Got to put in those steps.

Have a great Friday everyone!

Making a list: That's Jen and dave and Kevin for Bridge Run next year. :D

Wha?? When did I get roped into this!?! :confused3 :teeth: Your race report made it sound so cool-- I'll have to think about it.

Great to hear that your parents will be making the trip again this year. :thumbsup2 I think shirts are definately in order.

Cam-- Great job on your 5 miler!! :thumbsup2

Dena-- How cool!!! That page is great!

Eric-- Too bad about your race. Get well soon!

Kathy-- Good to hear you've got the all-clear to exersice again.

Jackie-- Oh look, another Garmin convert!! :goodvibes I feel like they should be paying us a marketing fee considering how many folks we have collectively turned on to them here.

Judy-- Very cool about your DH signing up for the half. No turning back now, I guess. :)

I had a great crosstraining day on Wednesday which my poor legs are still recovering from. Yesterday I spent all day playing golf (rough life, but someone's gotta live it...) which I guess counts for something. For the record, I am a much better runner than golfer, which really says something about my golf game. :teeth: Thankfully I play with people who are only out there to have fun and are not super-serious about it. I am hoping to get some runs in this weekend, but we will play the distances by ear for now.

Work is calling me back-
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:
