Wk of May 28--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I think I can, I think I can, I thought I could, I thought I could.....I did it! I finished the 10k in 90 mins. :cool1: I know that isn't a major record time, but it is for me.....I had a ball and I would do the Bolder Boulder again in a heart beat!

Thanks to all my buddies on the W.I.S.H. team I felt motivated and strong! :cheer2: I just know I can complete the full WDW marathon......I think I can, I think I can...... :p

Jodi - WTG on your 10k! :cool1: You did GREAT!

Dena - I totaly understand! Fitting everythin in the day is not easy!

I did not have time to read everything but will later!
Here is my training this weekend!
Friday - I ran 10 miles with an average 9:04.4 MPM...Not great, but I will take it.
Saturday did the bike thing! With sis and a guy named Jon who totaly has "Mad Biker Skills"...my pride was the only thing that allowed me to keep up with him.....we biked on some of the BFHs in GA. Then I went sking (SP?) and swimming in the lake for the rest of the afternoon...I can hardly move my arms! (I haven't skied in 10 years...but did get up and had a BLAST!)
Sunday - More work on the bike! LOVE THE HILLS! Trying to get as much of the bike in as I can.
Good news (I hope)....My sis has almost agreed to do the marathon! My SIL said she would do the 1/2 and my mom said she may too! We will see....Trying not to get my hopes up yet.

Getting ready to go run..will talk later!

Dena - Hang in there! I know it can be very frustrating. I am constantly trying to fit everything and I get mad at myself when I skip a workout (or 2 or 3). Although I would love to lose about 20 pounds, I'd settle for just toning up what I've got. Like the previous poster said, you just have to keep moving. Take a walk. Stretch. Try yoga, anything to help burn calories. Doesn't have to be fast, just has to BE. And we're here to help you along! :grouphug:

Monte - Congrats! I've heard the Bolder Boulder is a great event. I'd really like to try it one day.

Jodi - Congrats on your race, too! :thumbsup2

I did a couple short run/walks this weekend. But it was hot and humid (guess I should have got up at 6AM, like at WDW). Anybody have an idea how warm it'll be for the DL 1/2? I know Sept. in CA will be warmer than Jan. in FL, but trying to get an idea how warm at 6AM.

Terri

I've been MIA here for a while now, mostly due to a lot of out-of town company. I don't think it's going to let up soon, either. New group of friends coming in next week. I will really try to get here more often. I have missed all of you.

I am still putting in as many steps as I can - not quite what I'd like to be doing, but far better than not doing at all! No races planned for these humid FL summer months, so I'm doing more cross training than anything.

Sunny, I haven't read the last 2 weeks of posts yet, but from what I did read sounds like things with you have been pretty scary. Hope that getting off the Levaquin has helped. Please continue to take care of yourself.

Sunny - :hugZ: WHy is it that we get caught the one time we do something totally out of character for us? I know from what you right that you are doing the best you can for your kids! DOn't be too hard on yourself. ALthough you have SUpoer WOman strenght, you are still human. Good luck with the doc search!

Nancy - Thanks for stopping in!

Dena - We're all there sometimes. I got on the scale this mornig and founf out I'm heavier than I've been since last year. :( Toomuch holiday ice cream. I'll promise to try harder now if you will. ;)

Helen - Yes, that is what I was trying to imply. It just seemed like you were always running last year. Glad you'r egettign some good XT in! I need to work on that badly!

Howard - COngrats on the PR! That's awesome!

Solo - Totally forgot what I was going to tell you. :confused3 Congrats on teh good plane tic's though! That is awesome, especially for a non-stop from GR! Just remebered! You can have SR stonkers! Most of mine are! :teeth:

jodi - That heat woudl have kille me! OCngrats on a great 10K!

monte - Woo hoo! Congrats on your 10K!

Amy - Glad you had agreat time!

Christy - Hope your ankles feeling better!

Heather - Well said!!! I do not know how working moms do it to begin with. You amaze me!

Terri - Way ot get out there in that heat!

Mackinac Bridge Memorial Race - FIrst of all, I learned I spell the bridge wrong. :rolleyes1 I had spelled it like the city with a w and it's like the island with a c, even though it's attached to the city, not the island. :confused3 Good thing they're all pronounced the same!

Anywho....I need to upload pics, but my camera is still in the amphipod case, attached to the fanny pack. Online pics are not availanle yet.

Quick review. I thougth it was to be small. 1200 to 1500. Well, it was 600. Compare that to Viking's race! ;) I have no idea how far I ran - See Garmin question. The race info said it was anywhere from 5.6 to 5.8 to 6.1 miles. My Garmin said 5.06, but I staarted a bit late. Most other Garmins said 5.08. My Garmin distance was so short that I was afradi to start my kick until I saw the line, because I could not believe we were finishing already. We had a 10:18 pace, though. I wanted to be under 11, but RAELLY wanted ot be under 10:30, so I'm happy, although not 100% confident in Garmin readings. If the race really was longer, though, I rocked! :p It wa sa very cool race. Met a Boston marathoner. Wow! very nice person! The race was like nothing I've ever seen before, an likely never will. I think WISHers need to take it over next year! ;) Funniest thing. We started at a rest area just over the bridge. At the start, the man told us to run to the bridg eand turn right. duh... Turn left and you're going away form the bridge and into 70 mph traffic. Hmmm...There's a no-brainer.

Garmin Question - I've never fully figured out what it does with elevation and have not given it any bench marks yet. Does it track elevation, though? If it does, does it figure total distance when you run (vert and horiz) or does it just figure horizontal? I'm thinking this could be why everyone's GPS distances were shorter. It really did feel short, but 1.5 to 2.5 miles was down hill, so who knows. The other thing.... I have always heard the bridge was 5 miles long. Garmin put it around 4. I can't believe peopel ar a whole mile off.

OK, returned home Sunday and power planted SUnday and Monday. Yikes!! I can't go from 60 to 90 in a week. This is insane. Better than snow, but... I am proud of myself. I tend to ge t heat ezxhaution when I work in conditions over 80. I drank a water or gatorade every hour, though, and drank it in the shade. I made it through very well. Now if I can only get those muscles that I only use when planting flowers to stop screaming in pain! ;)

Have a good week everyone!

Sunny - :wizard: So glad to hear you're feeling better. You are such an inspiration to many on this board.

Mel - I hope your nephew's wedding was a blast and you had a safe, enjoyable trip.

Christy - :wizard: To you for a speedy recovery of your ankle.

Jodi - Great job on the 10k :cool1: We wanna see pics!!

Dave - Happy Anniversary!!!! I hope you guys had a magical time.

Amy - Congrats on the awesome 8 miles :woohoo: .

Howard - on the PR!! You're just breaking records right and left.

Kim - Great to 'see' you again. Glad to hear your training has been going well.

Dena - Hang in there :grouphug: . Life does get in the way sometime. You can always recommit and jump back in the game. That's the beauty of it. We'll be here cheering you on every step of the way.

Heather - I SO hear you sister!! It is such a vicious cycle. Sometimes I wonder why I just don't surrender and get past it. Congrats to you for staying the course when you have so much else going on in your life. It is no small feat, that's for sure. I can only imagine what an inspiration you are for those princesses of yours. I run to inspire my girls also

Monte - WTG!! :cool1: You will master the WDW full for sure.

Nancy - So nice to see you again. Happy cross-training and stay cool!!

Carrie - Congrats on the awesome race pace  . I am right there with you feeling the drastic increase in temps in the Northeast recently. I wilt when the humidity creeps up. Glad you got the flowers done.

Training is going well, although I'd like to get in an outside run sometime soon. I am running the Freihofer's Run for Women 5K in Albany this weekend. My girls will be doing the kids' races, which makes it so much more fun.

Happy training to all and best of luck meeting goals this week.

So much to catch up on after the weekend.....

Jodi-- Congrats on the 10K!!

Kim-- Glad to hear training is still going so well. Keep checking in!! :)

Dena-- Been there, done that for sure. To be honest, the only cure is just to put one foot in front of the other and get out the door. If you expect that it's going to be hard, you won't be disappointed and might even be pleseantly suprised. Let us know how it goes!

Monte--- Congrats on the 10K

Carrie-- Congrats on the race. Sounds like a good one. I know what you mean about the temperature changes, but I refuse to complain about the heat considering how much I complain about the winters here. Oh, and Northwest has already changed one of my nonstops  Now I am flying through Detroit for my return. Turns out the return they put me on was the one I was going book under normal circumstances, so no harm no foul....yet.

Christy-- Hope you up and moving better soon!

Howard-- What a great time!! And having just run a marathon recently?!?! :worship:

As for me, this weekend was kind of a bust. My intention was a nice long run on Saturday morning. Well.... Friday night I come to find out that an old friend is in town for the weekend and plans were made to "go out." Long story short, I'm not 22 anymore. :headache: The weather was so fanastic here I just never managed to get moving out the door to run for the rest of the weekend. Too much time at the beach, too much hanging out. I'm not exactly beating myself up over it considering how crazy the weeks leading up to it had been.

This morning I did manage to roll myself out of bed and do a nice 5K training run in 30:13 or 9:45/mile pace. I'm happy with neither the time nor the pace, but I guess that's what happens when you've been going at it inconsistantly. Also, it was incredibly humid this morning (we're getting thunderstorms as we speak) and my body just isn't used to that yet. Nevertheless, I got it in and hopefully I'll be back in form in no time..... :groom:

Back to work!
Happy training!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

I've been meaning to ask: Where do I get the cool WDW Marathon Weekend 2007 clippie?

Nancy- Hi! I was just thinking about you this morning and wondering where you have been and how you and Barry are doing. :wave2:

Jodi and Monte- Great job on your 10K's! :cheer2:

Carrie- Great job on the Mackinac Bridge Run!

Carrie and others in the NE- Welcome to my world of heat and humidity :sunny: Now you know why I run at the gym in the summer.

Hey where is Lisa? We need a pregnancy update. Any luck yet? :confused3

Also, where is Cam? We heard about Howard's PR. I want to hear about Cam's race. :)

Hey all! Hope everything is well for you...I have just been able to look through all the posts I have missed and:

Howard, Carrie, & Monte - WTG on your race! You are doing so good! :cool1: :thumbsup2

Keven - That is a wonderful pace for your run today! :thumbsup2 The heat does sap it out of you!

Sunny - I also read your post from last week and it worries me. I dont know if you know this, but I am a LPC. You need to really take care of you and see someone to talk if you need it....I am glad you can talk to us, I know that helps. I understand feeling guilty for having to work....I have missed several field trips and school parties b/c of work. I also do the chucky cheese and YMCA parties...I try to keep in mind that I am doing the best I can under the circumstances (sp?) I have been given. Don't beat yourself up....You are a great person and a great mom....... :wizard: :wizard: to you...I think you will feel better when you can start really working out again...I know that is like a therapy session for me.
Hope all this helped a little....Here is a picture to cheer you up!

A great big bowl of ICE CREAM always makes me feel better! :rotfl2:

Hi WISH Team!
I'm back from vacation! Will not have any time to read up. I will. I'm off for medical procedure--endoscopy ths time. I put steps in on the beach!

Christa, I know you cheered up Sunny. You cheered me too! That is a great smile getter! You are great!

Lily - :wizard: For the procedure! Hope you had a great vacation! Steps on teh beach sounds wonderful!

Heather - There's a reason I live in teh north. I could not handle that heat!

solo - You were at the beach and didn't stop by?? I'm hurt! ;)

Sara - Good luck on your race! Running with your girls sounds awesome!

Christa - Your pic is the reason my weight is currently bust! Hot = Ice Cream for dh and I. 3 out of 4 days is not good!

This is a total drive-by, I haven't even glanced at the thread yet.

But I'm so excited I just had to get this out to you all :teeth:

A friend at work who is going to do the RtB sent me a link on his new training toy... Of course it turns out to be a Garmin Forerunner, but look at this thing:

New Garmin Forerunner

It can be used with "motion control" software that corrects for course errors due to loss of signal. It can be used with Google Earth to put you right on the map! It is the absolute coolest gadet known to man.

He showed me what the uploaded data looks like:

http://trail.motionbased.com

Fortunately for me, my Garmin has been wigging out a lot lately... Looks like its time for a new toy :Pinkbounc

Sunny

Dena-- I know exactly how you feel. I have this awful feeling that when I do strart running again it will be right back to were I once started. And the weight issue is a never ending battle, too. I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary of making WW goal in June and I'm TEN pounds above it. I'm so disgusted with myself. The only disappointment I've had in my transformation to gym rat/racer is that working out doesn't solve the weight issue. :confused3 I think if I had the opportunity to wo 8 hours a day I could still overeat.

Also, this last scare of not being able to move without pain has been horrible. I've had to continually fight thoughts of "what if I can't workout anymore". I honestly don't know how I would live. I know that sounds so petty when there are people making a difference in the world with such greater obstacles in their life, but I have to be honest.

So Howard, can I pursuade you to join our RtB team? You've got the speed, baby :smooth:

Sunny

:rotfl: :rotfl2: Christa! OMG....you are too funny! I love it!!!

Sunny: The new Garmin sounds awesome! But I just bought my 301. It'll be a while for me!

Carrie: WTG on the race!!! :cheer2: I was thinking about you this weekend. Glad to hear you had a good time and super pace!!!! I would love to know more about how the garmin accounts for hills though myself.

I ran in the 90 degree heat yesterday at 1 pm LOL. Not bright! I did manage to pace at 10:19 mpm which included stops for my DD who was having bike issues among other things (she accompanied me). The humidity is brutal...now that summer heat has arrived I'll have to get my butt out of bed early and run in the cooler morning! :sunny:

Me, too! I discovered that DS can make the 3 mile round trip to the old fashioned home-made ice cream store... We've made a few trips. Of course they have a wonderful sugar-free, fat-free yogurt but I just don't seem to order it :confused3 puzzling :p

Hello everyone! Like so many others here I haven't read every single post on this thread yet, but I wanted to give you a quick race report...or perhaps I should say "non-event" report......But it wasn't all bad...

First off, DH decided on Friday to run the 5K. So since I lost my "support crew", I recruited my dad to "hold my things". Well, you would have thought I was running Boston the way I had my bag packed. I tried to think of everything anyone ever mentioned here that they bring. I had Chapstick, extra socks, tissues, sun block, sunglasses....

So we get there 45 minutes before our start time, as were were advised to do. I was pre-registered for the "4.3 K Fitness Walk" So I check in and find out I don't get a number or chip. OK, well, that's fine. This wasn't a "real" race anyway. DH got his stuff, but no shirt for him since he didn't pre-register. I did offer him mine, since he was really racing and I wasn't. (See what kind of a wife I am?) But he didn't take it. (See what kind of a DH he is?? :cloud9: ) I don't mean to criticize, but well, they are REALLY cheap shirts. Not Beefy-T's, like the kids in the PeeWee races got. Plus their shirts were in fun colors, like lime, purple, turquoise. Plus all the kids got numbers. Grrrr. And their registration fee was $8.00. I paid $21.00. :rolleyes2

OK, well, anyway, I was supposed to start five minutes before DH's 5K. So we said good luck and went to our starting lines. We had a "Leader" for our walk, which should have been my first clue of how things were going to be. My second clue should have been the fact that several women doing the walk on skirts on and a couple were wearing espadrilles. Hu???? :confused3 Off we go....at a record breaking.....chat pace. Yes, they were all chatting away. Apparently they all knew each other. There were about 15 or so women and one very old man. Then I realize what this is.....this ain't no FITNESS walk, it's a social event for the wives of runners. :furious: Oh no! Grrrrrr.

We had to stop twice in the first few minutes to let the 5K pass then the 10K had to cut thru. Well, I lasted about 5 minutes with these guys. After the 10K went by I took off. :moped: I wasn't thinking "Hey, maybe I can catch the 5K", but you know what? That's exactly what I did! :yay: Granted it was the very very very end of the 5K. I started thinking I should have just signed up for the 5K, but I didn't want to be over ambitious. But there were a lot of people walking it. I was walking/jogging. And let me tell you - OMG it felt so good to run! I see the appeal of getting off the TM! It was so beautiful, thought really darn hot and humid! But we went around a lake. It was so pretty! I was running for as long as I could, then I'd walk for a bit. Ohhhh IT FELT SO GREAT! :bounce:

Two funnies.....I glanced at my Garmin at one point and said out loud "Ohh! I'm ahead of the sweepers!". I don't think anyone heard me but I made myself laugh. :lmao: Then, when I used to gallop my horse on the trails and she'd start going to fast or we'd have to slow down for some reason I'd say "Easy up, missy!" and she'd slow down. I was running on a flat and it started to go down hill and I said "Easy up, missy!" to myself. This time two ladies did hear me! They smiled, probably thinking I was some sort of a looney. :rotfl:

I don't care. I had a great time and it felt soooo good to run on the pavement! I'm already scouting for another local 5K. I am so there! :cheer2:

BTW, DH pulled a hamstring but did fab-u-lous! He was 19th in his age group. I am extremely extremely proud of him! :woohoo:

OK this was supposed to be short. I have to get back to work now. Tomorrow I promise I will give the WISH board the attention it deserves!

ETA: OMG! I got a TAG!! :Pinkbounc

Judy

What a great reports, Judy :cheer2: Kudos to DH and Kudos for you for "not getting swept" :rotfl2:

I just poked around the motionbased.com site and discovered it works with 201s and 301s, too. I might give it a try!

WTG Judy!! What do you mean it wasn't a "real" race??? 4.3K is nothing to sneeze at! Even if ther were some bimbos, and 1 old man, trying to make it a non-event. ;)

Well, I am starting to finally get over my illness of 2 weeks... it is now a sinus infection! AUUUGHHHHH. I did wog 2 miles on Saturday (didn't want to push it since I was still sick), and 3 miles on Sunday in the beastly heat. Holey Cow, I was dripping after that and it didn't help my allergies or sinuses one bit!

On Thursday I plan to run with the local group here as long as it doesn't rain. I am super nervous since I am so slow, but they told me there are run/walk people in the group. We shall see, I am not one for being embarrassed in a group setting.

Judy - That is so funny. I am so proud of you for taking off. I wouldn't be able to handle the dwaddlers either!!!
