Wk of Mar 9 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi, everyone.

No time to post. Running out the door. Have a great week.

magslite/Mike, Howdy!! I was in Chicago with ya! :wave2: There was a Triathalon thread around here somewhere...But you have definitely come to a good place to ask that question!! AmyBeth68 has answered...xterratri/Lynne, ironz/Betsy, and Stitch lover Sith/Erin, are you out there?? Come around more often! Say, "Hi!" to Maggie!!

I will definitely say Hi to Maggie.

AmyBeth thank you for the response, I'll head to Jewel/Albertson's in a few minutes to check it out!

It looks like people post their workouts, so here goes; Todays was a 50 minute run (which was too easy on a treadmill so I ran it with 3-4% grade most of the time) got to 5 miles total.

8 work outs in the last six days...only 19 more weeks of training...but I get a rest day tomorrow!

:woohoo:

Mike

Shan & Amy- Good going on the cookies. How many in your troop? I have 13 girls in my troop, and a very supportive parent network. My cookie mom does a great job every year, so I'm lucky to be stress free during the cookie selling period.

BTW, we picked up 1,900 boxes, which are for pre-sale and two booths yesterday. We sold 530 boxes at two booths. Probably have to go back to get more from the buffer for this Saturday's two booth sites.

Well, off to our Girl Scout meeting. We're going box sliding & kite flying (winds permitting) down by the ocean park in downtown.

WISHERS

Our clinic got off to a great start today, I estimate a whopping 300 people showed up. I'm sure over the next few weeks, some will drop out, hopefully not too many.

A lot of beginners went out for a 3 mile loop around Kapiolani park. Most walked, and some jogged.

I helped guide about 35 intermediates on a 6 mile run, going at a pace of 11 minutes a mile, with 5 water stops along the way. From the park, we trekked up Diamond Head, around the backside into Kaimuki, and then back. A few of the regulars I train with kept going to the 8 mile mark.

A few guys ran a 10K early in the morning, and then came out to run 8 more, for about 14 miles altogether.

The advance group went 12 miles, at a 8 minute pace. Whew, that's flying!

Everyone have a great week! Safe training, and fun racing to you all.

My wife Maggie has posted here in the past, walked with a group of WISHers in Chicago's 1/2 marathon last year, and recommended that I ask here.

I am a beginning triathlete, aiming for the Racine 1/2 Tri this year.

I wonder what some of the endurance athletes use as a recovery shake/meal after a workout...there is a mind boggling array of (not inexpensive) choices out there.

For workouts longer than an hour I normally take a dose of Source naturals Triathlete supplement. Link below:

http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1300/

During and after the workouts, I use Cytomax sports drink for hydration

link below:

http://www.cytosport.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=5

Please note, I am not endorsing or advertising these products, I am hoping for some feedback from more experienced athletes in regards to pre, during and post workout nutrition. If I am wasting my money on these products, I'd sure like to know...

Thank you VERY much in advance!

Mike

My sister and I like to train and race with a product called infinit. It is completely tailored to your specific needs electrolight wise. With that being said I also do long workouts with Gu gells or power gells and water. After a hard workout I drink a yogurt smoothie then try to eat something light with protein in it. Now with all of this being said only you can make to call on what does and does not work for you. I personally have a hard time eating on the bike, the run is not an issue.

Good luck on training for your first half I am doing the same. Mine will be Musselman on July 13.

Anne- I have not gone away, I just got really busy with work school and training. Hope fully spring break time I can get around to posting more. I hope this helped you out Mike.

 AWESOME LONG RUN!!!!!

I have to go stretch really good but I was so excited I had to run in the door (literally) and share with you guys what i just did because you guys give me the inspiration and motivation to do it (especially since DH can't run with me anymore :sad1: )

Just did 7 for the first time since I was training for MINNIE last year. You will NEVER believe how fast I ran it. :dance3:

Here's the breakdown:

Mile 1 & 2 - 10 min pace
3 - 9 min
4 - 8 min :woohoo:
5 - 9 min
6 & 7 - 9:15 pace
Whole 7 - 64.5 total!!!!!

Thank you guys so much for constantly being a source of encouragement to each other and it is so nice to have people who will get as excited as you are or as frustrated as you are.

OK gotta go stretch will catch up with everyone in a little bit.

Hi Everyone!

Oh it was so pretty outside today. DD9 had her first fastpitch game of the season so we got a big dose of outside too.

I also joined a new gym today. Well, actually Dh joined a new gym and it seemed silly to belong to 2 different gyms so I joined with him. This gym has everything INCLUDING the ability to test your max heart rate and VO2 threshold. I hope it will be a good change. Shan - you should definately check out the new Lifetime Fitness CLub when It opens.

Cecilia

Hey all, just a quicky because I am busy. I wanted to post and let anyone that wants a cheap Garmin know that Aldi's has the Garmin 101 for 69.99.

HEY JUDY... Check your PM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey y'all,

Thanks for the well-wishes for Mel. She's doing better, but I think the 'feel like crap' moniker still applies. She is coughing pretty constantly. Of course, you can't keep a strong woman down, so she's been makin' queso dip (YUM!) and moving around, gracing every room of the house with a cough or two :rotfl:

AlohaJeff: That was such a cool thing you did with leading the folks on the 6-miler, and props to you for being so involved with the GS cookies. I know the princesses are gratefulprincess:

Ohio-based WISHers: my thoughts are with y'all right now, as I just saw pics of the snowstorm you just had. It's unbelievable! I hope that your power stays on and that you all stay safe on the roads (unless you;re fortunate enough to ski to work!).

I took my first run today since the Sarasota half-marathon last Sunday. Just did an easy 3-miler, made it a little fun by kicking up the pace a teensy bit, to a 10:13. It's such a far cry from where I used to be averaging just a few months ago (nearly a 12:00). My, how two half-marathons (and some nice bling) can change your style :woohoo:

Later!
- Jeff

WTG Angie, I can ony dream about being that fast. I walked 8 miles in 1 hr 45 min. today, someday I may be faster ;) but then again, maybe not.
I consider myself now to be a serious walker cuz I've order a Garmin, have 2 training books, ordered WISH clothes, AND most especially cuz I read these boards. :goodvibes Not to get all sappy, but you guys are really inspiring.:worship:

Angie, congrats on your run! :woohoo:
I hope you don't mind me asking, but how long was it before you could really start back up running again? I'm debating on having some surgery done, but I worry how long I'll be out and how long it will take to get back to where I am now. :confused3

Jeff, we have 16 girls in our troop. Good luck with your cookie sales!

Cecilia, so did you join the Alpharetta Lifetime then?

SamSam Sounds like you are serious to me too!! :flower3: and that's one of the things I love about this place, no matter what level we are at everyone supports and encourages each other. I have told my story so many times I won't bore you with all the details but you should know that there was time I couldn't run a full mile without having to walk so I have definately come a long way.
Shan I don't mind you asking at all. I tried to start back about 8 weeks after surgery and it got pretty sore (but I was doing WAY too much WAY too soon). I just within the last month - so it would be about 10 to 12 weeks after have I been able to really start back. Again there are still times, like today it's a little rough after that run yesterday but then I will just back off for a day or two. Every week gets a little better. It felt like FOREVER!!!!

Gotta go back to work.

Hey Everyone!

Shan - Yes, we joined Lifetime Fitness. Dh was very impressed with the place. He has needed a place to swim year round and this place seems perfect for him. We are both excited about the fact that they really encourage heartrate training.

As for training after surgery, it really depends on the type of surgery. I had some surgery done on my diaphram a few years ago and I was not able to workout for 4 months. Of course, sitting up in bed FELT like exercise so it was all relative. My sister had her gallbladder removed and played tennis two weeks later. Be sure to talk to your Doctor and be specific.

Angie - WTG on that run! I love it when its fun AND you feel fast. But you didn't just feel fast, you were fast! Great job!

Cecilia

Good Morning all!!

Working in a beach resort at the height of high season.... that gets me an automatic LTO exemption for the last few weeks, right?

I'm getting back in the saddle and hitting the roads this afternoon after the gym... I'm hoping for four or five miles, but we will see how it goes. I am not really feeling 100%... I think the cold bug I have been managing to avoid around work might be creeping up on me. I definately need to break in my new running shoes, though!!

Which reminds me... my PSA to all WISHers--- when you are ready to trade in those running shoes for a new pair, get thee to a running store and get fitted. I did two weeks ago and... well, I'm very lucky. Turns out that I'm a pretty decent supinator and every running shoe that I've used to date has not been built for that at all! I was at the store for almost an hour and tried on 8 (yes, EIGHT) pairs of shoes and picked up a pair of Brooks that should hopefully help matters. My chiropracter said if I had been running for three years without proper shoes, it's a small miracle I hadn't been injured yet. SO... get fitted!

I'm officially in for Minnie this year, so I get to be-bop up to Orlando    for a short visit with many of you good folks.

I am currently trying to figure out what my plan is past Minnie.... Living in South Florida means there are not many races in the summer (would YOU run in a blast furnace??), so I'm considering possibly trying to do a fall marathon as a part of my Goofy training. I will definately put in for the NYC lottery again, if I get in I'll probably defer to 2009.... I am considering doing the Twin Cities in early October, but that's the weekend before RFTT so I would only be able to do one or the other.... Any thoughts? Think it's worthwhile to try and squeeze a full in during my Goofy training?

I'm hoping to finish my long overdue race report from Goofy and post it tonight. That sucker is L-O-N-G, so I'm trying to edit it down a bit. It is getting redundant, though... there are only so many synonyms for "humid" and "completely exhausted."

Have a great one!
Kevin :earsboy:

hey everyone! Thanks for all the good wishes. I'm doing better as long as I stay still, but if I try to get up and move around too much, I have coughing fits. I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever run again.

Kevin...great to see you around here! You'll LOVE training in S FL in the summer ;)

Welcome Mike! Definitely say hi to Maggie...I was one of the folks in Chicago, too!

I feel like I haven't been around here in months. So what have y'all been up to?

Hey guys!

Mel...Glad you're feeling a bit better!

Kevin...I totally agree on the shoes! It's a great to be able to get fitted!

Angie...Great run girl!

For me...LTO!!! I was working from a different facility last week. Then we were off to WV this past weekend. I did NOT ski as I broke my leg last time and it's a wee bit difficult to run on a broken leg so I did not want to chance it. I much more of a beach girl anyway. I did get in some good XT on the bike in the FC they had there. I missed my 4 miler on Sunday though. I know they say you should not try to make up missed runs, but I really feel like I need to try to get it in tonight. I guess I'll decide once I get home.

It was super cold there. We had the fire going...It was windy and 10 degrees outside. Apparently it was so windy, it pushed the smoke from the fireplace into the condo! ugh!!! It was horrible! Everything smelled like smoke. I got home and started unpacking and even the clothes are stinky so I'll be washing everything!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!
Stacie

Greetings Race Team -

I'm really sad to report that for the first time since I started training over two and a half years ago...I missed a L/R. I can't believe this. I had seven miles scheduled for Saturday which just did not happen. And I'll tell you why.

Saturday morning we had to leave early to go to a Bar Mitzvah. I decided to defer my L/R until Sunday morning because I just didn't have time. After being at the Bar Mitzvah all day Saturday we got home around 6:00pm and were pretty tired. So we went to bed fairly early. At 1:15am we were woken up by the sound of whinnying, which usually does not occur at night. So I get out of bed, get dressed and go outside with a flashlight to see what is going on. The wind was crazy, as it had been all day. Then I see hoofprints on the front lawn. Uh oh, this isn't good. Then I see Emily looking towards the back yard and whinnying. I walked around the house and there was Mist in the back yard. Somehow she had gotten loose. She was all wound up from the wind and the freedom and also scared from not being used to being loose, so she was running all over the yard. Which of course, since we had so much rain, was all soft. So now our yard looks like the moon, from her hoof prints in the mud and the sliding stops she did all over the place. And we have a VIP Visitor coming in three weeks! UGH. :headache:

Anyway, I got her in, using a can of grain and getting her to follow me because there was no way she was going to let me put a halter and lead on her. Then Charlie and I grabbed flashlights walked the fence line to find where she got out. One of our neighbor's trees had fallen over into my paddock and took two sections of fence completely down, and knocked out two boards on three other sections! So, between 1:30am and 3:15am Sunday morning we were outside, in the cold and crazy wind, cutting up a tree and repairing the fence.

Needless to say, when the alarm went off Sunday morning I just could not get up to do my L/R. :guilty: Then it just never happened. We were busy cleaning up the mess. Then went to see a friend in Julius Caesar.

And there you have it. That is why I missed my L/R for the first time. And I am not happy about it. :sad2:

So this morning I made myself run for the entire 45 min of my Monday morning workout. The last five minutes were really hard but you know what? I did it! Whooo hoo! :woohoo: I am very happy about that anyway.

Mel - I'm sorry you weren't feeling well but Jeff did a great job pitch hitting. :)

Craig and Martha - Have a fab-u-lous time!!! :yay: Jealous jealous jealous...

Jen - OK, I'm going right now! :flower3:

Angie - You go girl! :thumbsup2 Whoooo hoooo!

Vic - I missed it. What is Marilyn doing for the entire race team? Whatever it is, sign me up. :upsidedow

Kevin - You're killing me with this race report, you know. popcorn::

Judy

You have many opportunities for long runs this year, but very few cases like Sunday morning when your babies need you. I certainly think you were justified bagging it yesterday. And running 45 minutes straight today? You're becoming "Judy the Jet." Or is that Judy Jetson?

Thanks for the well wishes. Martha's probably more revved up about high tea overlooking Hyde Park. Me? That's an easy one, its the football match Sunday afternoon, Everton v. Fulham at Craven Cottage. I'll put down a 5-er for you at Ladbrokes. They even take sporting wagers inside the stadium grounds. Hopefully we can make enough on the bet to pay for the trip.

Last year when Lesley and I saw a match, the unthinkable happened, Tottenham's goalkeeper scored a goal. All I could think of was "I could have gotten 100-1 against that happening, and if I'd put down 10 pounds I could have paid for the whole trip." I wonder if it could happen again . . .

Craig

I'm so excited! I finally took my rings in to get resized. (For those that don't remember, I lost my wedding band and then later found it in the trashcan! :scared1: )

I went from a size 4.5 to a size 3.5!
So obviously I have lost weight, just not in my tummy. :headache:
Now how I can be five pounds heavier than I was before Christmas and my finger be so much smaller is beyond me...
Five pounds muscle?!?

I talked DH into getting the same setting in white gold instead of yellow gold, too. :thumbsup2

Angie and Cecilia, I'm thinking again about getting my stomach muscles repaired (Was told my GYN they are no longer attached. Had two c-sections.) and getting some skin cut off. Both my babies were huge and I'm so short - my tummy is a mess. I'm just wondering how long it will take me to build back up to where I'm at now. We're signed up for the next Donald. It just doesn't seem like any time is a good time. :confused3

Hi team...

Well....didn't get much skiing in today despite plans otherwise. Got the dreaded loudspeaker announcement on the mountain today "will the parent of Jane Doe please report...". Yep...my DD10 had an accident on her snowboard and broke her wrist. Thankfully it was just her wrist. Unfortunately...she plays competitive travelling fast pitch softball...:sad2: ....season opener is just weeks away. It's a TOTAL bummer. It's a relatively minor break...but it's her writing hand...her trumpet playing hand (spring concert just weeks away)....her throwing hand (softball)...you get the idea. Gonna' be a very long several weeks. *sigh* I'm feeling really bummed out right now...this has been the vacation from "you know what". Jinxed trip from the start with the crazy winds and power outages and flooding rains. I wasn't feeling well yesterday...now I'm sick to my stomach over my poor kids' bad luck. Again...with this sport it could have been MUCH MUCH worse. I am so thankful she's in one piece and wasn't carried away in an ambulance. I just have to focus on the good. I think it's going to be a very long drive home tomorrow :(.

OK....sorry to be such a downer. Rant over ;).

Shan: Congrats on the ring resizing. That is awesome news!!! :goodvibes

Craig & Martha: Sounds like an awesome trip. I have family just outside London and it's one of my favorite cities!! :thumbsup2

Kevin: Nice to see you!

Angie: Awesome run girl!!!! :)

Judy...So sorry to hear about you missing your long run. What a night!

Yay Shan!!! My...you have some tiny fingers!!!

Amy...OMG!!! I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know your heart must have fell to your feet. To her, I'm sure it is very tramatic. My heart goes out to her. But, you are right. It could have been worse and she could have been carried away in an ambulance and believe me... that is NO FUN! Been there, done that...broke leg (tib/fib)...crutches, brace, getting married with a half broken leg... I wish that upon no one! I wish her the best and a speedy recovery (for her and for you too!) :wizard:
