Wk of Mar 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey all,
Quick post here about my training today before I go shower and go to sleep. I got in a good 4 mile run on the treadmill tonight and averaged about a 9:20 pace. The real accomplishment I'm proud of is that I was feeling under the weather all day at work but I still forced myself to go to the gym and toughed it out through the run. I imagine I'll have many moments like that during the marathon so it's probably good practice to learn to push myself even when I don't really feel like going. Hope you all have a good day!
Kristin

Great pace Kristin!

Thanks everyone! :grouphug:

True confessions: I would like to do the Chicago Distance Classic (penguin medal is on my list), but not sure if DH can come with me due to babysitting issues. We very rarely take trips without each other. If we can work it out, he'll come, but would like to save himself for his first half to be WDW.

What's it like traveling solo to a race?

TIA!

Mel, it would be so cool if you can come to Chicago!! I traveled to WDW in Jan 06 by myself for my first ever half and stayed for a week. Of course I love, love, love WDW and have been there many times so I was very comfortable going solo. It looks like there could be a nice group of WISHers for the CDC, so you won't really be alone!

Who else needs to add a Penguin medal to their collection???

Morning team. I had a "woe is me" last night after my run. Not b/c of the run, it actually went pretty well, 3.1 miles, 26:07 (still trying to get to that 25:00 time for 5K)--but I think I"m just getting lonely running. My marathon training buddy is now gearing up for triathalon season, and training for his first Ironman--so he's not around anymore. And DH and I can't run at the same time b/c of the kiddos. Oh well! I'm much better today--back on the TM for me this am!

MelR--yeah, I saw Hal Higdon's plans for multi-marathons, but the schedules were for 2-4-6-8 weeks between races. We'll have 14 weeks between Akron and Disney--so now that I look at it--definitely doable! I can't believe that you did so many races in a row! And your best time at the Hogeye at the end???? You go girl!!

Mel--WTG on the pace!!! The WISH team is getting super speedy!!!

Dave--OMG on the race pics! You guys are die hard runners--at least that's how this southern girl sees it!

Hope everyone is having a great week of training! Oh, was wondering if anyone has heard of this. Last night we had a PT come and talk to the running clinic and he was showing us lots of stretches. The lady I was running with (the Boston qualifier) said that her PT reccommends no stretching pre-or post-running. And now that there's some big controversy between PTs on what runners should do. Interesting.:confused3

ETA: I would LOVE a penguin medal--But I brought it up to DH and he thinks Chicago in August would be too hot. Whatever! But he's the one footing the bills, so I go where he goes! And right now it's Akron in September!

The first yr. i did disney, I did Goofy,
then an off road 50k in feb,
then Cowtown marthon in Ft. Worth in March and
then Hogeye in April and Hogeye ended up being my best time.

 Melissa, I didn't realize you ran all those after 2006 Goofy!!!

That was awesome!

Oh, Dave, great pictures. You are getting so fast! Imagine what you will be able to run on a dry surface and without wearing 4 layers.

Off to see if I can get in 7 or 8 miles today. It has been soooo long.

Colleen

Carrie - I have to tell you...the Ok Go video is on here at work & I can't help but thinking of you! :rotfl: I hope you know I love ya & am only teasing. (we tease the ones we love, right? ;) )

What's it like traveling solo to a race?

TIA!

Mel, at first I was quite nervous about traveling solo to Disney, but WISHers were just great! The entire weekend, there were a number of WISHers that made me feel welcome and I had a great time.

Next year, I am not going to fly home right after the marathon because I want to go to the WISH post marathon celebration and hear all the stories!

Colleen

Good Morning Team. Well I went outside yesterday to run a shorty... but soon discovered that the wind was "kickin chicken". It was nasty. My running partner Sadie (my dog) and I did 2.2 miles and that was it. I had on my ear band and gloves, but the wind in my face was so strong. I managed 2.2 in 29 minutes, which is not so good. But at least I god outside and did the steps. It was a drastic change from my run in sunny CA.

Stephanie - From what I am told, the CDC is not as hot as you think. First, Pat said there is lots of shade from the buildings... and also remember that is it always cooler by the lake. It definately can't be worse that WDW this year!!!

Mel - Wouldn't it be cool if you came to Chicago. We will drive down since it is only 4 hours. Maybe we could all stay at the same hotel and carpool in together. Oh and Awesome time!!! I seem to be slowing down since using my Garmin. I'm not sure if I totally trust it yet tho!!! It also could be because I am switching from indoor track to outdoor roads.

Oh and my thoughts about not stretching before a run... I didn't stretch yesterday and my legs and shins ached while running. Could it have just been an off day? Yes, but who knows? I try to a short stretch if nothing else, but I am not a PT so you don't have to listen to me if you don't want to! :)

Have a great day all... I am filming more video today... BLAH!!

Well, OK, yes, I overslept this morning. :rolleyes1 So, today was a rest day, which I will trade for tomorrow, which will be XT.

I have a question about stretching. How long do you hold a stretch? I've been trying to be better about doing stretches so I've been reading some about them, and I get conflicting information. Some say hold it for ten seconds, some say fifteen, some say 30.

Mel - WOW! Way to go, girl! :woohoo:

Jackie - I don't know, right about now I am feeling a little ragged. I'm in need of a big dose of spring weather! I hope you love the new TM! Don't worry about me being tough. I have to do silly things to keep myself amused on the TM sometimes. :upsidedow Especially if I am watching a boring movie.

Mel-- I'm so happy for you! I rememeber a few months back when you were getting really discouraged because you just couldn't improve your pace. Look at you now!

Cam- Here's the quote I have from Runner's World a while back-

Running or walking 11 miles a week isn't going to prevent the accumulation of waist fat. Increase your training to 20 miles a week, however, and you'll lose abdominal fat, even without decreasing your calorie intake. Source: Journal of Applied Physiology

HTH!

Just my 2cents. I am living proof that you can train hard (I'm doing Hal Higdon's Intermediate (I) plan with just a few slips) and GAIN WEIGHT. In fact, in 2003, I had a very hard emotional year and gained significant weight while working out hard 90-120 minutes per day at least 5 days a week (but not all running). I'm not saying that quote isn't accurate, I'm just saying that there are those of us who defy all logic when it comes to working out and weight management. I'm convinced I could never out-run my appetite.:confused3

Actually, my current weight gain while training for a marathon is also due to emotional issues. I've got a big issue at home:sad2: I've decided that if I don't lose at least 8 lbs from my current weight before the race I won't do it.

Thanks for all the help on home TMs. I went to Omni Fitness last night and tried to by a Pacemaster Platinum Pro VR (http://www.pacemaster.com/platinumProVR.htm). This TM actually has a -3% grade! Who was it that asked me how I would simulate downhills on a TM? I think it was Optimator. Anyhow, before going I signed up for their free "VIP membership" which gave me a $50 coupon on a purchase of $250 or more. The guy at the store knew nothing about it and asked if I coud come back today while the manager was there. Now I'm rethinking the choice. It's the only TM I've found with this feature (and it's brand new for Pacemaster) so I'm wondering if they've worked the bugs out of tilting the tread back and forth. It's on sale for $1995. I also tried out the Landice L-7 (#1 on CR) and the speed button was impossible. I don't know if it was just the floor model or the design. I told the sales guy I'm more interested in a work-horse than lot's of features. He told me the Landice is the best choice for a work horse. They only had Landice, Lifecycle, Horizon and Pacemasters on the floor so I couldn't try some of the other's you all mentioned.

I'll keep you posted;)

Sunny

Good morning everyone!

Judy - I normally hold a stretch for 10 seconds. I guess it's one of those individual things. Just be careful if stretching cold muscles.

Found this this morning while crusing active.com. www.swamprangers.com/ranger%20run.htm

I've never participated in a trail run before. Think I may sign up for the 5K.

Take care. :)

Vic - DO IT!!!!!

no training for me today. I've been basically resting this week for a 24 hr. adventure race this weekend. It is around 91 miles. The race is in lawrence ks. Actually, the teams can be tracked on the internet during the race. I'll post my team name and tracking web site later this week in case anyone cares.

Hi WISH Team!

I have somissed everyone. It seams that Everything is getting in my way to post here. LTO issues by the barrels...at least I've been able to get in most of the steps. I've only missed training last week when I was sick and actually missed 2 days of work too. Computer at home collapsed from exhaustion and I had to get the Geek Squad to revive it. I've got that back yesterday, and I'm back in the gym tonight so all will be right with my world as soon as I can see what everyone's been doing.

What have I read about a Chicago Distance Classic WISH Team meet up? Oh, the pressure...I've been weighing that along with the Chicago marathon trying to decide if I'd be totally nuts.

I hope everyone is having happy training, I saw Dave's happy race pics. Wow! Brrrr. I saw Mel's great time! Wow! Go Girl.

I'm swamped at work so I don't know if/when I can get back. I'm going to try to keep it up in the background and see if I can catch a moment or 2 or more to read...
:surfweb:

Mel -- CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I am so happy for you! I also remember when you discouraged about your pace. Now you are rockin' the place!!!

BTW, with all the WISHers who will be there, you won't be doing anything solo that weekend, if we can help it! :goodvibes: As a matter of fact, I agree that we should all definitely coordinate on a hotel!

Mel - You go girl! You are fast!

Dave - loved the pictures...how many people participated?

Well my Pro Form tm is still out of commission, the belt is all over the place, so I haven't used it in weeks. The repair guy is suppose to come out this week, but we'll see. My tm isn't ever 4 years old yet! Bummer:sad2:

Well I'm off to do the laundry and housework.:laundy:

Random thoughts... I'm slowly catching up, but that will be fleeting I'm sure:rolleyes:

Colleen-- I would love to do WDW marathon weekend solo. That would be the only way I could take advantage of all the WISH meets. I missed out on so much this year.

Lily-- Glad to see you returning to cyberspace. Also glad to see you use the LTO term-- hee hee, I think I coined my first acronym:upsidedow

Dave-- I loved the race pictures. Can you imagine how many people watched you guys and thought you were absolutely nuts?:rotfl2:

MelR-- Oh please do post your teams ID. That sounds so cool... and um... crazy:rotfl:

Jen-- I never stretch before a run. I do a warm up walk, slow jog but no stretching. I always cool down and stretch after a run. The only time I stretch before a run is at a race. I guess it's kind of a "everybody's doing it" kind of thing. What I've read is that you should never stretch before a warm up. HTH

Todays WO:
Gym TM
first 2 miles at 2% last 3 were at 1%.
First 4 miles in 46:03 (avg pace 11:30)
Last mile was a lot of walking, so full run came to:
5 miles in 58:26, avg pace 11:41 (avg grade 1.4%)

Sunny

Oh guess what? Cafepress made me take off the Goofy '08, Mickey '08 etc. because of "possible" copyright violations. How could Mickey's feet, or Goofy's hat be a violation?:confused3 So I out smarted them with 39.3 logos;) I'll have to come up with something for Micky and Donald.

Sunny - I always stretch after I warm up. It's kind of a pain tho because sometimes I don't have a lot of time and I feel like I am wasting 5 minutes stretching. Who knows? I did a 2 minute warm up yesterday and started right into the run. About a mile into it I stopped and did a quick shin stretch.

Lily - Good to "see" you again. I haven't signed up for Chicago, but I am thinking about it. We also want to plan a family vacation in August, so I am not totally sure if I can make it yet.

Sunny - lots of

We went to the Y early today since I had a doctor's appt. and was home earlier than normal. My shins & calves really hurt today! I guess I did overdo it on my 9 miler Sunday. So, I walked the entire time. I only got 4.5 miles (just over one hour) in since the kidstop was closing and I had to go get Zack out. I will make up that .5 somewhere else this week.

OT - the doc. was stumped about my weird leg warmth thing going on. They are running crazy amounts of bloodwork on me (5 tubes!). And I get to have an echocardiogram next week. If they find nothing & it still keeps happening, I get to go to a neurologist. Fun fun.

Mel--CONGRATULATIONS!!! That was an awesome run. You are turning into a regular speed demon!

Kristi--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your leg! Sounds like fun!!!!

Melissa--Rest up for this weekend! Did you say 91 miles???? :faint: :faint: :faint:

Dave--Great pictures! It looks COLD!!!! :cold: Hopefully the Flying Pig will have better weather, but you never know, it *IS* Ohio we are talking about! How did your radio spot go?

Colleen--Did you run today? Wondering how it went....

Christa--Are you surviving your OUT OF CONTROL week?

Vic--That trail run 5K looks awesome!! I would love to do a trail run, alas I don't think I can as I am a big klutz!

Monica--Wanna come to my house?? I have plenty of :laundy: to do myself! I'll even let ya use my treadmill! :tiptoe:

Stephanie--I gotta admit, I was thinking the same thing: a marathon in August in Chicago??  <----he's so hot, he is red

Judy--I normally stretch before I run and I hold the stretch for a 10 count. I also stretch after I run and I hold the same stretch for a 15 count. I've tried not stretching before I run and something always ends up hurting. I also don't warm-up before I stretch, but I always run late afternoon/early evening so my muscles are warm from everything I have done that day. I'm not sure if what I do is right or wrong, but it works for me and hasn't caused me any problems. Knock on wood. ;)

Sunny--I can't lose weight while running either! 2 years ago I lost 15 lbs in a little over month--I was eating extremely healthy BUT not exercising at all, I didn't start running until May 2005 when all the weight had been lost. Now I am exercising 5 days a week, still eating healthy, not quite as healthy as before, but still healthy and nothing! I'm not gaining, but I'm certainly not losing either. It's killing me! I have 52 days to lose weight and get back into my shorts for Disney, I REFUSE to buy a bigger size!!!!

Does anyone have any good, fast, and healthy recipes for dinner? That's what's killing Stephen and I. After working all day and then coming home and running, who feels like cooking dinner? Especially when we aren't ready to start cooking until well after 7:00.

I have no training to report, yesterday was rest a day. Today Hines and I are scheduled for a 4 miler. I am so glad I have a little running buddy!! :dogdance: And speaking of Hines, does everyone like my new avatar? I am so mean to him!!! :rotfl:
