Wk of June 10--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good evening everyone!

Alll I can says is, it was "Africa" hot on the patio this evening. The thermometer said 90 degrees when I ventured out around 1800 hours.

Did the following upper body workout. By the time I got finished I was a sweating pile of goo.

DB Bench Press** 3 x 12 x 30
Bentover Rows** 3 x 12 x 60
Flyes 1 x 12 x 30
Seated DB Shoulder Press** 3 x 12 x 20
Lat. Pull Downs** 3 x 12 x 85
Shrugs 1 x 15 x 30
Tricep Pushdowns (Rope)** 3 x 12 x 35
EZ Bar Curls** 3 x 12 x 40
Tricep Extentions 1 x 15 x 40
Hammer Curls 1 x 12 x 25

** Supersets

Carrie - Hope your walk turned out ok.

Erica and WWDave - WTG with the 8 miler!

Kevin - WTG with the 3 miler.

PatsBill - WTG with the training. Keep it up!

Dona - Welcome back.

marathonmommy - Good luck with the shoes.

Hey, I want my "YARC" song to be "Highway to Hell." :thumbsup2

Kevin

Like Shan I did a pretty long run on a cruise ship. We were in the Baltic 2 summers ago and I hit the promenade deck precisely at lunch time, hoping the crowds would be busy eating while I was running.

This theory actually worked! The promenade deck wasn't particularly crowded, and it was wood and flexed a bit under my strides. The only dangers were (1) opening doors, BEWARE! and (2) the tight corners. The coolest part by a factor of 1 million was when I was running towards the back of the ship. I think the ship was doing about 20 knots and I was running maybe 5 knots so I could see and feel that I was running the fastest I ever had, a spectacular 25 knots :thumbsup2 . The fact that it was enhanced by the ship's engines was totally irrelevant.

I don't recall the number of laps, but it was a lot. I did think the laps and being in the fresh air were far superior to being on the treadmill in the fitness room.

Patsfan73 - be sure to let your fine running shoes dry slowly. Pull out the inserts and pull the tongue back and let them dry. Once they're dry you can brush off the dirt and ick and they'll be nearly as sharp looking as new. Of course after 300 miles they'll look totally disgusting and you can wear them as a badge of honor.

WW Dave - in Austin, Texas they used to sell bumper stickers, "Will Rogers never met Barry Switzer." A more true statement was never made.

Vic - Heat to the second power is just fine now, since I'm 1000 miles north. If it's hot again on January 13, 2008, I will hold you personally responsible. I'm counting on you buddy!

I'll do my best to ensure perfect running weather, sir. :thumbsup2

Sorry, I'm not going to be able to catch up with what I've missed, but I cannot miss posting that I for one NEVER want that kind of heat that we had last January.

Vic, I'd appreciate any way you could hook it up for much cooler weather on that Saturday and Sunday. It was reversed this year and got cooler as the week progressed.

I'll 2nd Lily. Don't want that again in January. It was wicked! I did read all the posts, but forgot to take notes so i could remember what I wanted to respond to. I've got to get a better system:rolleyes:

2008 will be my 3rd Goofy. I don't know if I'll do 2009. I'm thinking about doing the Maui Marathon in Sept. 2008, so don't know if I'll make it back to WDW in Jan. 09. But part of me doesn't want to miss the race! It is WDW, after all. Plus I like seeing all you guys there. I'm also trying to plan a couple of non-race related vacations. I'm just so torn!:confused3 and it's a year and a half away:rolleyes1
Anybody thinking about taking a break from WDW?

Terri

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Greetings from RIO!!!! I havn't been able to read the posts this week, but I just wanted to check in. I'm waking up and fueling up to go out for a run before my meeting starts. I flew down on an overnight flight on Sunday and arrived Monday morning around 9:00am. There was a slight problem checking in as they didn't seem to have my reservation. However, I had all my paperwork with me, and they sent me off to breakfast while they straightened it all out. I eventually got a great room on the 19th floor overlooking the ocean. The hotel is right on Copacabana Beach in Rio.

Here's the view from my hotel room - looking from my room off to the right.

And over to the left...

That hill you can see off in the distance is Sugarloaf, and I went on a hike of it in the afternoon.
DSC00613.jpg

Monday was my only real free day from my conference, so I decided to schedule a hike with Rio Hiking up Sugarloaf. My guide, Eduardo, picked me up from my hotel at 2pm. It was about 2 hours climbing to the top of the mountain (I'm counting that as x-training). There were great views of the Atlantic Ocean and islands in the bay.
DSC00632.jpg

There was one part of the hike where I had to put on a harness and climb about 80 feet. It was challenging, but it felt good to get up there. You can see Eduardo in this picture at the top of the rope.
DSC00635.jpg

Here I am after that section, near the summit of the climb (notice my socks).

And here's the view from the top of Sugarloaf. Off in the distance on the peak of one of the mountains you can see a cross. That is the "Christ the Redeemer" statue that you can see in many pictures of Rio.

We took a cable car halfway down, and then hiked back through the forest to get to our car. On the way down through the forest we had one of the best sights. Above us the trees were full of these small monkeys.

It was a great day, and I was beat at the end of it. I returned to my hotel by 5pm. Went up to the pool to take a dip, and ate at the restaurant next to the pool. I was in bed asleep by 9pm.

Hope everyone is well, and I hope I have some time to catch up with all my WISH friends later.

A quick post before work. Last night the thunderstorms came up 30 minutes before I was supposed to go run. Now it seems nature is against me. At one point I thought the lightening had gone and was greeted with a huge flash and loud bang that almost broke the windows in the house. I decided it would be better to stay in since Lynnda didn't want my hair looking like this. :scared1: Hopefully tonight will be better but the forcasters don't think so.

Dave - It looks like you are having a hard time on vacation.;) I hope the conference goes well and you can get a little more "off" time.

Terri - We have thought about it briefly but since it is so close we will still go to it for the fun. Wwe may scale back the amount of time we are there though later on.

Vic - I agree with the heat, I had to work outside yesterday and was soaked within 10 minutes. I think I may be back outside again today so you can keep the heat up north for me. Our running store seems to be open when they say they are, even on days where they are doing races.

Dona - Congrats on the results of the PET scan. Glad you had a good vacation.

PatsBill - Great job running in the downpour. I reluctantly will run in the rain but ours is often accompanined by lightening and thunder so that gives me the great excuse not to go out.

Kevin - Sorry you had to miss your LR but it looks like your times are great for the shorter ones.

Renee - Great job on your run, your times look great. I am doing the TOT but that is so far off it is hard to get motivated for it now.

Judy - Happy Anniversary since I think I missed it the first time around. Congrats on Charlie making Rescue Diver.

Martha - Timmy is definately growing. His baby cloths are getting a little tight now so it is about time to go into the attic and find the next size. He needs to slow down a little bit so we can enjoy the small factor.

Stacey - Great job on the workout. That is a great pace.

Krista - Hope the run was pain free. It can feel weird when you don't have the pains that you are used to when running.

Sara - Good luck with your marathon this weekend.

Leana - Hope you were able to get your run in. Have fun with your friend and try not to need the bail fund, others seem to have spoken for it already. ;)

Kim - Glad the walk was a good one. It is always great when the second part feels so good.

Heather - Congrats on getting the first Goofy training in. No thinking about it being hot in January though. Only cool thoughts are allowed. ;)

Have a great day everyone.

Bill

SW Dave, thank you for sparing us the pictures of the pretty ladies on the beach. Wasn't the thong swim suit invented there.

Vic will you and Bill, talk to SkyWalker about this.

I have my Pretty Princess up already for our walk together, she will stop growling soon. She is not a morning person, but we have to get going before it gets to hot.

Your "YARC" Joke for today:

A woman was admitted to the hospital and asked her husband to go home and get her a few things including comfortable underwear. Her husband asked, "How will I know which ones are comfortable". She said, "Hold them up and imagine me in them, if you smile, put them back".

Have a wonderful healthy day and do try to stay out of trouble.

Dave:hippie: "YARC"

Good morning TEAM!! I ran 3 miles last night without any pain!!!   I slowed my pace down and ran 4/1 instead of 5 or 6/1 and it was awesome. My time was 34:24--ave 11:29 mile--I can definitely take a minute slower per mile if it means I don't have any knee pain! :) Hines did the first 2 miles with me, but I dropped him off for the last mile as the heat was getting to him and he was dragging. It was so weird to run without a leash in my hand, I didn't know what to do with my hands!!! :rotfl: Tonight I'm heading to the gym to do the bike and lift. Stephen unknowingly paid me the best compliment last night, after my run I did a series of crunches and then I did push ups, Stephen was like wow, look at you and then before we went to bed I was packing a bag for the gym and Stephen said "you are really serious about this, aren't you?". Me, the laziest runner (sorry, Carrie but I am THE laziest :) ) was called serious about running and exercising. :) :) :)

Sky Walker Dave--Those pictures are gorgeous!!! Are you sure you aren't down there on vacation?? ;)

WW Dave--I love your joke of the day!! :lmao: :lmao: Sadly, it is very true! I hope you and Erica have a wonderful long walk and she works you hard today!

Vic--That is quite the workout! We're going to measure your biceps in October and see how your hard work has paid off!!! Oh, and I'd appreciate cooler weather in January too. See what you can do about that! ;)

FL Bill--It was so weird, I kept thinking I felt my knee twinge because I am so used to it hurting during every run. Oh, and I put my inserts back in my shoes a couple of weeks ago when I stopped running and just started xt, I didn't realize it until this morning, but I ran 3 miles in my inserts without any shin or calf pain. When I first got them back in March, I had terrible shin splints because of the inserts. I can't wait to meet little Timmy. Does Billy allow you guys to call him brother yet? :lmao:

NE Bill--I'm with you, Diet Pepsi does not cross these lips!!! But that's all I'm going to say about that, I love these people too much to fight with them! Great job on your walk! Incorporating hills into your training will REALLY pay off on race day. Trust me!!

marathonmommy--No more procrastinating!!! The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get moving. Enjoy the new shoes!!

Judy--I've been meaning to ask you this for a long time now, but I think I remember you from another thread before you came on here. You got married at the WL, right? Did you ask a stranger to zip up your wedding dress for you?

Dona--Sounds like you had a fantastic vacation!!!

Terri--No WDW???? :scared1: :scared1: What madness do you speak, woman????? :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Kevin--Did Captain behave himself for your guests??? :) Sorry you had to miss your lr.

Have a great day everyone!!!!

Good morning everyone.

Looks as though it will be another hot one in NW Florida today as it was 82 degrees at 0700.

All - I'll start working on good running weather for January. However, I need to work the "No Hurricane" angle first. :thumbsup2

Dave - Great pics, but I do have to agree with WWDave, where's the thongs? :confused3 :rotfl:

Terri - No break from WDW for us. We were there last month and I'm ready to go back. :)

Bill - Sorry you couldn't get your run in. Maybe today.

Krista - WTG with the 3 miler, and have fun lifting tonight. The workout I posted takes about 30 minutes to complete. Little or no stopping between sets. It's a butt kicker.

:)

SW Dave- I love the photos of Rio! Keep them coming! I am very impressed by your hike. Have a great conference!

To answer Christa's question, I did the 1/2 marathon at WDW in 2005 and 2006 so I have seen the hot/cold/hot pattern for marathon weekend. I am definitely keeping my fingers crossed for cold this year.

Kristi- The Goo Goo Dolls are coming to Houston. I think of you everytime I hear the radio station giving away tickets. Don't forget you have a free place to stay in Houston. ;)

Yesterday was a rest day for me. I will squeeze in a short run after work tonight. Have a good day everyone.

Hi Everyone, Its been a LONG time since I posted here. Took a *bit* of a break after running the 2006 Marathon. Still ran but nothing over 6 miles. And really had no interest in ever doing another marathon--it hurt:rotfl2:

Anyway, a couple months ago I went in for a "simple" gallbladder removal and unfortunately had complications that landed me back in the hospital for close to a week and on my couch at home for another month. I am finally on the mend (I think!) and a couple weeks ago my drs gave me the go ahead to exercise. I have been doing mostly yoga and walking.

Well....

I am starting my new running program today and am really excited! I am following the Beginners 5K program from this months Runners World. Its definately humbling considering having completed so many longer distances but it is very low pressure and am hoping it gives me the confidence to continue.

DH is running the 2008 marathon and I'm not sure what I'm doing (primarily b/c I have no idea how quickly I will bounce back into the whole running scene). I would love to do the TOT and I think it is feasible.

Hoping I can join your thread to get inspiration and some accountibility. I remember so many of you from when I used to lurk/post a couple years ago and it is really something to see how far you've all come as well as how dedicated you are to the sport.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to follow your journey!!

tiberius - Congrats on the 9.5!! I know what you mean about the early day warm temperatures. Mine get me every morning here in FL.

Mel - Congrats on the 6 miles. That is awesome that you are ahead of your goal!!

Christa - With everything you did (the bike ride and the shows) I am astounded you got in 12. I know I couldn't do that!!

Dave - I am happy to hear that she has realized that running is not the root of the issue. Hopefully you guys can have a wonderful adult weekend at WDW for this years marathon!!

Shan - it is great to hear you had such a wonderful trip, and to make things even better you got in your runs while you were gone. That's better than I have ever done!!

Andrew - Congrats on the 8 miles. Hopefully after resting your legs won't be screaming at you anymore!!

Kelley - I hadn't heard about your DH. I am so sorry to hear what had happened. WISH him the best from me!!

Heather - You know those of us that ran this past year at WDW are planning for it to be hot. So you know what's going to happen right? It's going to be freezing!!

Krista - Holy Cow Girl!! Your workout sounds awesome. Seriously.... a movie theatre at a GYM? I need to find me one of those!!

Leana and Megan - I have been reading the Harry Potter books to DS6. We are currently in the Order of the Phoenix. Trying to get that one read before the movie comes out. I too am afraid of what is going to happen in book 7.

Well... my LR on Saturday was 6 miles in 54:12... so 9:02 mpm. Yesterday I did some XT cardio/legs and boy are my legs sore today. So I went out this morning, trying to beat the rain, and got in 3 miles in 24:41 (8:13 mpm). It started to rain about 2 minutes before the end of my run. So I was truckin' it trying to beat the rain home. Unfortunately, I was hoping to be able to get DS6 out for his run before the rain came, but that just didn't work. The rain hasn't let up since it started, so it looks like he will have to get his run in tomorrow. This week he starts r3/w1, he is really excited. Also.... I'll be getting my new Tahoe this week which is awesome. I will be able to go out to the rail trail for my runs from now on. It makes it alot easier to track the mileage, since I still don't have my garmin!! ;) This week is supposed to be pretty simple, 3 today, 3 with speed on Thursday, and 6 on Saturday. But with Michael not being able to run today I'll be doing his 20 mins with him on Wed, Thur, and Fri so that he can get in his 3 days this week. "O" well... he is really enjoying it so far, and as long as he is enjoying it I will keep running it with him. I can't wait to run the 5k with him in AK. Speaking of which does anyone know if there is an age limit for entry into the 5k? I emailed disneysports.com but they haven't replied yet. Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful week, and I'll check back in later.

Dana

I'm a bit late reporting in on my LR on Saturday, but the MIL's presence made it difficult to get to the internet. Anyway, the training plan called for 5 miles and w4/r1. Again, I was amazed to see my times have not slowed down much since I switched to this from a w2/r4 plan.
mile 1-14:18
mile 2-13:36
mile 3-13:32
mile 4-13:32 (how's that for consistency!)
mile 5-14:08

For comparisons sake, here were my times when I did my last 5 mile LR where I tried to run as much as possible:
mile 1-13:17
mile 2-13:42
mile 3-13:15
mile 4-14:32
mile 5-15:04

I guess I need to keep seeing the times to realize that I don't need to kill myself in order to stay at a pace I can live with. I just don't feel like I am working that hard when I am still smiling at the end of a training session, even though I know that it how I am supposed to feel.

Krista - WOo hoo on teh pain free run!!! That is awesome!!!

Kelley - So glad your dh is healing well!!

Kelly - Welcome back! It's good to see you!!!!! Starting over from the beginnig stinks, but at least you know what you are capable of. Good for you for starting again!!!!

SWDave - Great pix!!

OK, so dh and I whimped out last night. I was havign issues and was afraid I may be dehydrated, so we'll try again tonight. Instead, we spent over an hour and a half talking to the owner of the local running store. I still can't believe how well he remebers peopele. It' simpressed teh Penguin, too. yese, we got to hear how he came to be firends with teh Penguin. Too cool. So, does that count as XT? Oh, I did pick up some lace locks. They were out of the magic pill for heat resistance, though. ;)

Greetings all -

Do you guys get the RW Quote of the Day? Today was a really good one:

"You have a choice. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off of your face."

Today I took an unscheduled rest day. I figured after all the various pains I was experiencing it might be a wise idea. Today I am happy to say I hurt a lot less. My hip still hurts a little but everything else has subsided quite a bit. I have an appt with the podiatrist tomorrow. Of course, we all know why I am getting all these aches and pains...:rolleyes1 It might have something to do with the extra 40 pounds I carry around with me.

Kevin - Are you in???? Oh and a word of advice about running on the ship...don't bother with your Garmin. That may seem obvious to you, but well, I didn't think of it and did 20 miles in like 26 minutes while on board. Pretty impressive, eh? :thumbsup2 I couldn't handle the TMs on the ship. The gym on the ships I've been on (Alas, no DLC...yet!) were way on the top deck and you could feel the movement of the ship rocking back and forth. I had to hold on to the TM rails, which I really don't like to do. We went to the track very early, like 6am, every day and we found a lot of sunrise watchers standing on the track. We got a little annoyed with them because some of them just would not move! Grrr. Anyway, are you in???

Jen - Ha ha ha! :lmao: OK the check is in the mail.

WWDave - Let's send out the message loud and clear - The "You Ain't Right Club" is for everyone! No dues, no exams, no requirements...it's all just in fun and a place to be silly and work off taper madness or nerves. :upsidedow

Dave - What spectacular pictures! WOW! And I have to say, I am very touched that you thought of us while you are away...

Bill - Wow that was a pretty comprehensive post for 6:30am. :thumbsup2

Krista -Oh I'm so glad you were pain free last night!! :woohoo: And, uhh, yup, that was me... See post #34 http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=139812&page=3

Vic - All this talk of thongs...guess you guys are getting us back for all our posts about running skirts and bras and such.

Some of you will remember when "thongs" were something you wore on your feet --now know as flip flops. This brought many strange looks from my teenagers during our recent beach vacation with grandparents -- grandparents kept saying "aren't you going to wear thongs to the beach?" or "where are my thongs" my kids were like ""UUGGGHHH" -- oh yeah -- flip flops -- you've got to stop saying that!"

Multi generational vacations are interesting!
Dona

Nothing to report today yet today on the training front, but I did want to say that the running shoes from yesterday were still quite moist this morning. Good thing I took someone's (alot of people's) advice to buy two pairs so I could switch off and let the shoes recover. They still look nice and clean though. Tonight I plan to either walk again or maybe do weight training depending on when I get home and the weather. I can't risk another thunder and lightning storm walk as then I'll be running shoe-less.

On the plus (or minus) side, I have dropped just about 10lbs over the past 2+ weeks and am no longer a 400+ guy (at least not as of this morning's weigh in). (Nobody get overly jealous by the seemingly quick loss--remember I am starting at a point which I hope for all your sakes is much higher than any of you are and in the long run, I probably need to lose the equivelent (or more) of some WISHer's/YARC member's total body weight.) It was close, but I had to move the main/large weight down one notch on the doctors style scale, which was encouraging.

SW Dave, thank you for sparing us the pictures of the pretty ladies on the beach. Wasn't the thong swim suit invented there.

Vic will you and Bill, talk to SkyWalker about this.

I concur on the need for some close up photos of some different types of natural Brazillian beauties from SWDave (i.e., non-landscape/non-animals). But I wonder if the picture of the cute little monkey will at least make the YARC mascot happy.

*Krista* I am the same way regarding Coke v. Pepsi. Unless I am desperate, I will get water at a restaurant if they only serve Diet Pepsi, which for some reason my wife doesn't get. It was kind of funny recently when my wife had a party at our house for a church related matter and one of her fellow church members works for Pepsi in our area. My wife had bought all Coke products and when the women said something about it and that she could have gotten Pepsi for the event, my wife replied that I would not allow Pepsi in the house. (My wife prefers Diet Coke too, but I was a convenient excuse I guess.) But then again, as I usually tell people ... I AM the King of the Castle.....at least until the Queen gets home.

Dave- Great pics, loved the monkey!

Neptasfan73- totally with you on the Diet Coke thing! I can't stand DP! Yippee on the weight loss, keep up the good work!

Judy- I loved the RW quote about the towel, I wrote it in my training log!

Today was xt/easy day, so I did 2 easy miles walking, and 10 minutes on the bike! I tell you, if I hadn't of bought the helmet (investing $17, I'm so cheap) I wouldn't keep up the biking. But it does round out my training.

Happy training everyone!

On the plus (or minus) side, I have dropped just about 10lbs over the past 2+ weeks and am no longer a 400+ guy (at least not as of this morning's weigh in).

Way to go! That's awesome. May your next milestone come quickly, easily, and safely. :thumbsup2 :cool1:
